New E-bike legislation in NJ

I’m looking forward to speed traps on the Columbia Trail. And I’m not even kidding.
The trail widenings are part of the plan to add flock cameras to trails then the autonomous thermal drones will come then the park pass fee for all nj parks. Corral them and track them under their own volition because they want to stay off the road.

To be more precise the State does not allow them to do anything about quads and dirt bikes (same goes for the regular police on the roads), regardless what little effect they could have given their small number. But maybe the State will unleash them to chase the nefarious e-bike riders...

Our industry shot itself in the foot (again), and have to shoulder a big part of the blame for part of this. Seth says perfectly what we (at our shop) have been saying all along...."American Class 1 E-bikes are 750 watts, 3 times as powerful as pedelecs, and they cut out at 20 MPH instead of 15. Yet, it's likely that if we had just stuck to that, Class 1 E-bikes, this situation would not have transpired." Once the industry started chasing the higher powered internet crap market, and not really differentiating itself from the e-motorcycles, it was easy for the bureaucrats to blur the lines and lump them all together (along with the general public). I'm just happy we don't have 15 or 20 e-bikes in inventory that we have to figure out how to navigate getting rid of them.....

I am not sure the e-bike classification is the reason for this huge disservice to bike riders in NJ. As Seth said in the video, what supposedly sparked this (kids being killed while riding unregistered Surrons, already illegal without a registration and insurance) is largely not affected by the new legislation which in turn will likely result in a source of revenue for the State targeting a group that did not in fact created dangerous situations, but most likely has the disposable income to be disbursed. I wouldn't be surprised if the next move were to extend registration and insurance to all bikes. Ironically, the thing that makes me fume the most is the mandatory DOT helmet (which to be honest could result in safer bike helmets but I'm being very optimistic here).

Just to re state this fact, Class 3 bikes have been illegal since 2018.
