My Hovercraft is Full of Podcasts

Today my head is killing me. Fuck these allergies and all the trees and flowers. I'm moving to a state made of concrete. Or under the surface of the sea. I scraped myself out of bed, got half-dressed to ride, then said F it and took a shower. I then sat on the couch and had coffee. I'm in the office now because there is less pollen here.

It does make me wonder how much of the incessant colds in the last 2 years and feeling of being tired were actually allergies - I'll have to pay more attention to this going forward. A nearly 300 pound coworker tells me I should be taking locally grown honey. Every day I come *this* close to explaining the irony of an astoundingly fat man dispensing health advice. But maybe he's on to something.

Tomorrow we will ride the SSaP course. I believe we are riding at 7:00 am, assuming I can get out of bed and make it in time. We will ride 2 laps. The first lap will be fun & happy & social and what I would consider a solid cat 2 pace. It is not a beginner ride. If you are not in blue & orange *or* if you are in blue & orange and have been texting me things recently that violate the "if you don't have anything nice to say" edict, you are subject to be dropped. After lap 1 all bets are off. We will do a near race pace lap to end the ride. I suspect Utah & I will just ride together and hammer each other. I doubt we will go flat-out on the fire roads but will push the pace everywhere else. If you read My Hovercraft is Full of Allergies you are welcome to join. There may be an Arby's stop on the way home.

Just being in the office for 15 minutes and I can feel the allergies easing up. Maybe I'll just bunker up here until they're gone. Can someone who goes through this every year give me an indication of when this hell will end?

Also, is it worth trying the (banned word not Hub-B) ZUR-TEC instead of Claritin?

Think I'm going to get a haircut today. As I walk in the security guys look at me like I'm supposed to be on the bleachers with the OWS people. Yeah, they're back. And they're being allowed to setup where we like to sit and eat lunch, or drink coffee. I'm going to find out who they are and shit in their mom's basements, every one of them.

I know all about the bunker feeling; When my allergies were really bad all I wanted to do was sit in front of an air conditioning unit and fall asleep.

I've been on a steady diet of that Z stuff and I've been fine. Surprised actually. I'm sure tomorrow I will be a ball of itchy eyeballs, but I can't remember what meds you are taking to battle this.

I like how you say you MAY stop at Arbys.

My eyes are on fire today as well so I can sympathize. I'm an idiot though and prefer not to take stuff if I can manage without it so I haven't been taking much.

I have had better luck with zurtec over claritin when I do take stuff.

My buddy who has really really bad allergies swears by Astelin. It's a prescription Nasal spray, he uses it once in the morning and he's good for the day. He works construction so is outside lots and doesn't get the benefit of office filtered air.

My problem isn't so much the itchy/runny nose stuff, though that's a slight problem. I get the sinus headache, which makes me feel like jumping out the window and plunging 17 stories down. I can't imagine what people with migraines go through.

I went to the Duane Reade down the street and grabbed pretty much 1 of everything and asked the pharmacist if it was ok to take them all with whiskey. She asked me why, and I shrugged my shoulders and yelled something about smoking 'em if you got 'em. After a few patient questions, she suggested I just stick with the Claritin and add some Pseudoephedrine. I wonder if that word is banned. After showing my license, a blood sample, jerking off in a cup, peeing on a blotter, and signing something where I promised not to sell it to childen, I walked out with the $7.99 store brand.

Now 1.5 hours later I'm not ready to jump for joy but I do feel a bit better. She also said I kinda need to stick with the Claritin all the time, as it doesn't do much as an on-demand thing.

Side note: I brought up the idea of fasting a few weeks ago and RU posted more or less what I thought about it, that the idea is stupid. But what a lot of people consider "cleanse fasting" is really just living off fruits & vegetables for a few days. I'm interested, especially as right now in the throes of this allergy stuff I feel like a bloated load of waste. Something I'm kicking around a bit. I'll look more into it. I think the notion of going 3 whole days with no food is asinine. But I do like the idea of cleaning out the internals a bit. I don't think you actually clean yourself of anything. I think you just give your body a break from all the shit you stick into it on a daily basis. Then you feel really good and want to get drunk. So it goes.

some interesting stuff here. it's part 6 but links to previous articles are at the bottom.

mark's daily apple

I read the Daily Apple from time to time. He can be out there, but I have gotten some good stuff from it. I have dabbled in some Intermittent Fasting (IF) before, which is really just a way to say, "Don't eat if you're not hungry." But, and this is a theme here, I'm always hungry.

Interesting reading, nonetheless. I'll look more into it the week following May 5/6, as I'll need some detox.

Holy shit Pseudoephedrine is awesome. I just feel partially stoned is all. But my headache is almost gone.

COOL. yeah he can definitely be out there.

pseudoeph is of course the main ingredient in meth.....so you should be all good!

The cleansing/fasting thing has been popping up a lot lately-
I've got a friend who's currently doing some fasting.
I don't think it's for me, but the interesting piece that keeps catching my ear is the inflammation caused/worsened by carbs/starches (someone correct me if I have this wrong).
Anyway, the relevant bit here is the claim that this inflammation extends to worsened allergy symptoms.
Anyway, there's that.

So are any civilians jumping on the pre-ride?
Sounds like fun, but it's awfully early to get up just to get stranded in the woods. I mean I could probably sleep in and get lost on my own at a more reasonable hour.

Also, see your doc and ask if a nasal steroid is appropriate on addition to the antihistamine. The nasal steroid requires a bit of use before impact, sometimes 2weeks prophylaxis PRIOR to allergy onset, but you could get relief quickly, but again, speak to an allergy specialist (preferably) or your gp.

NB - I have no conflict on any of these meds, but used to work for a producer of them and competitors of fexofenadine.

I think you should try a steady diet of pop rocks and coke. Not just for a few hours, I'm talking subsist only on 1 package of poprocks and can of coke every 2 hrs for a week.

It might not clear your head and your performance at SSAP might be less than optimal but it'll make for some interesting blogging.

This.

I started getting allergies about 3 years ago, so bad that I went to the eye doctor because I thought I was going blind because my vision would get real fuzzy and I would scratch my eyes till they almost fell out. He told me I wasnt going blind but I had allergies.

My on staff Dr. at Pepsi then told me the whole routine with the allergy meds. She said you pretty much need to take them regularly rather than when you have attacks.

I dont like taking meds so I chose to piss, moan, and scratch every first few weeks of every season change.

Yeah I'm not far off with the meth pills. I felt like the Hovercraft definitely was hovering a lot today.

Norm, sorry about the allergies. That really does suck.

"They" do say that taking bee pollen and eating LOCAL honey is helpful. As for fasting, I couldnt. But I will say that since I have given up white breads and starchy foods and pasta, I feel 100% better. Not related to allergies, but just in general. Giving up meat did wonders for me as well.

You def need to take pills like zuuurtec, claritan, and allegra for awhile for them to kick in. For instant relief, benedryl is where it is at, but that should only be taken with redbull and vodkas.

For some reason this year my allergies haven't hit me. I'm usually out of commission this time of year, so maybe you caught my allergies. Thanks. I do find that some seasons claritan works better for me, while others allegra does the trick. Zyyyyrtec never seems to do anything.

I really have nothing to add but my Dad started to get horrible allergies about 8 years ago. For the past 3 he has gotten a shot which is usually just before the season and has been free and clear...

For those who don't have a lot of time, scroll to the bottom for The Money Shot.

This is a release week. That means it's going to both suck and go fast. It's a crazy week for any number of reasons beyond that, 2 of which being that the RIF Monkey has hit the company, which is always fun times. Second is that my boss is in town Tue/Wed.

Quick weekly planner looks like:

Mon: Ride in rain for an hour, beat self up
Tue: Hopefully make the A ride
Wed: Just work, no ride
Thu: WFH, ride in the morning, release early evening, maybe drink Thursday night
Fri: Hopefully not too much went wrong Thursday so Friday is easy.

But let's look back real quick. I'm rushed for time right now.

Friday

We went for a bike ride after work. The child is not amused.

Saturday

Utah & Rob and the AWESOME VAN. Doesn't Utah have the lok of a computer game guy who isn't quite looking the right way? Sort of just standing erect not actually looking at the subject manner? I guess that makes Rob the main character in this RPG. He had to go to work so we kept riding.

After the ride my body went into traction from allergies. I'm going to stop commenting on them at this point. They suck, this year is awful. That's all I got. Hopefully this ends soon.

That night up to Eric & Allsion's to enjoy some pizza. They have a child, who is not in this picture. I guess Nat must have been holding him at this point. IDK. Julia was also there, either watching TV or tickling Cole's feet.

The pizza was excellent.

Sunday

Quick ride in the morning, then I felt great as the rain beat the pollen down. When Bill was saying about it being like training at altitude, I felt like I had come off the mountain. Then just about 12:00 the bottom fell out. I don't know why. I did use the vacuum. Is that possible?

Then I made this. That's the iPhone actually being able to give DOF in the shot, which I had never really done. It also tints the whole picture orange.

And some red bean ice cream (inspired to make some from the night before). Then some kung pao:

That was good. I had planned on making this a longer recap. Those of you on FB will have gained virtually nothing from this post, since I post all these pictures. Anyway, for those who just scrolled to the bottom:

The Monday Shot

SSaP course is fast. Allergies suck hog. The Oishi Clan makes good pizza. I like beer. And espresso. I rode my bike. I make good ice cream and kung pao chicken.

And just like that it's Monday. I rode in the rain this morning. Hopefully I'll ride this week. We have a release Thursday. Raid kills bugs dead.

The end.
