Commuting

been slacking. Interupted by the "snow" and yesterdays rain. Getting back on the horse tomorrow hopefully.

An enclosed transportation is much better in the rain.

Sorry but i have to disagree, even a so called bad day on a bike is still a better day then no bike. Besides it was spring like warm yesterday. Soon enough you will know what i am talking about.

I know what you are talking about but on a shitty day you just want to get home twice as fast and not deal with wet gear. Nothing wrong with that either. Agree to disagree?

I'd ride in snow but there is a safety concern

anyways, I drove today but brought the gym bag

then I'm going to pick up a steel SS/fixed cross bike again! (another reason why I drove)
It's gonna be my bad weather bike.

I'm with you. I've commuted in the rain a few times. On a nice summer day its not so bad, but at other times it sucks. If I'm going to be more uncomfortable and just plain miserable riding in, then I'm perfectly content to take the bus.

I can see and understand the everyday commuter thing, it is a challenge for sure. For me though I don't have anything to prove. Its simply a change of pace that I enjoy when I want to.

I'm a little off anywho ; )

Manny nice grab, i will be on the look out for crosscheck down the line.

Finally got the bike commute from Dunellen to Bridgewater started this week. Got out there Monday and today. Two things I've learned so far:

1) The ride in at 5am is nice and peaceful,, the ride home during rush hour........not so much. (I give you NYC commuters a lot of credit, you must deal with this both ways)
2) After a long weekend, it takes a minimum of 10 minutes for the hot water to come out of the shower head at work. Monday was my first day commuting and I went to jump in the shower when I got there. I let the water run for 5 minutes and it was still ice cold.....so I got the mother of all wake up calls when I decided that no hot water was coming and jumped into the ice cold shower. Just as I was about to get out, the water started to warm up.........go figure. This morning was much better, turned on the shower and 30 seconds later it was like a steam room. I'm guessing that with no one using the water all weekend it takes ten minutes for the hot water to work it's way through the pipes.

All-in-all, so far I'm really digging it. Looking forward to getting to work the rest of the week on the bike.

Rdoonz please keep us posted on your new adventures, even a pic once in a while. City commuting isn't as bad as you would think, many bike paths and a city laid out in grid. Hardest part is staying focused which is a must, I won't get into my many illegal antics but city dwellers and drivers kinda get it 🙄

2) After a long weekend, it takes a minimum of 10 minutes for the hot water to come out of the shower head at work.

If the sinks are near the shower, turn on the shower and turn on the hot water on all the sinks. Will cut down on the time it takes for the hot water to reach the shower.

Otherwise, turn on all the showers to hot if there are multiple showers.

What, never stayed in a Hostel? 🙂

not my pic but picked up one of these. Much more affordable then the crosscheck
although i don't really know if I can ride it to work fixed on days like this. The lowest I would like myself go is 39x18. I have several hills to conquer on the way in. Now, where will I find the time to swap parts I have on and get myself comfortable on this

Sweet ride yo! Does it have eyelets for fenders and racks? I started with 46x18 but became too spinnie on the flats. At 46x16 i pretty much can get up most hills including the cliff i live on while still pedaling at 20+ on the flats.

thanks, i like to bring the silver wheels back where ever I can. I kept all the parts from the xcheck so I'll be throwing them on instead

yes, eyelets. Only one full set in the rear. But I figure I can probably get both the fenders and rack to mount on same holes or use p clamps for fenders. This bike seems discountinued in US and I'm disappointed they didn't bring over the disc version this year.

I rode 45T around the rolling flats by house but when I rode the Sourlands range I rode 39T. My commute isn't SL so maybe I can push a 42T? then factor in the exra bag weight. I just don't want to have to self destruct every commute.

yea I had and sold the xcheck because I felt it was a tad small. It was a 52cm (I ride 54/55). I had to run a setback post and 110 stem. Which isn't my flavor but it worked. That's what you get for listening to this site telling you to size down for cross...

Mistake selling it. I got the frame on closeout from jenson at the time because it didn't have a fork. Ebay prices for good xcheck colors are pricey. I sold my frameset on ebay for as much as I picked this complete Fuji Feather CX. I tried to keep it for the wife but she was much happier downsize since she would probably ride it a handful times per year. YET N+1 baby! Fuji is stored in my car still until I have an opportunit to sneak it behind another bike 😀

No I do not have to keep my bike oustide. I'd just rather have a bike I don't care to scuff up. That's still hard for me though. I'm probably a bit OCD.

Then dump these cheap steel framaes and get something a little nicer. If you had to keep it outside, cheap no question. Note, xcheck falls into the cheap steel category. Jump up a level in frame price and it makes all the difference. How are you not on an all-city yet? My Mr. Pink has columbus zona tubing and mid-reach road brakes. It rides a world better than other steel bikes I had. You can fit a 32c tire if you don't run fenders. 28 with. PF30 BB lets you run fixed with an eccentric BB. If you get the non-columbus one, it is even cheaper.

you said it! because I'm a cheap bastard!

Surly steel is bad? Dude, it ride pretty nice IMO?

What is your bad weather bike these days?

Hudson ter. parking next to park residents only

Well, they finally put up the residents only signs up on Hudson terrace next to the park. I was not sure where to park. So I parked down the road about a mile, across from some bar.I think it's still Hudson terrace, not sure what town it is down there.I did not see any parking signs.I hope I'm OK there.Wow that was a rough hill first thing in the morning.Anyone have any other parking area's near by? Not sure I want to tackle that hill every morning.

Mr pink is my bad weather bike. It is tits. I would say surly is high-low to low-mid range. If they offered better tube sets, that would be different. They focus on someone that wants a notch above a cheap, cheap steel frame. There stuff is nice but not the bees knees. All cities stuff isn't much different but at least they have better tubing available on certain models. Start focusing on quality and not quantity.
