Am I wrong to be ignoring fatties?

Would anyone be willing to take a look at this and let me know how it sounds, as I truly don't know if this is a POS or good deal. It sounded pretty good to me, and I emailed the guy to take a look. I am usually weary of craigslist stuff, but, dude seems legit. Has the original swapped out parts, etc.

Tires suck
Bars stem post you will want to swap
Mulefuts can be converted.
Steel will be heavier but not
With a bluto is nice
Not bad and consider your budget was higher you can dump some of that cash in it.
Being that your heading to Philly make appointment late afternoon and hit Halters before, chances are you wont go further. You may end up with something completely different.

I was thinking that at that price, I could easily snag this and put a few hundred in upgrades into it. Overall budget is almost double the price of the bike...

When You ask the fat bike world of Mtbnj for an opinion if you should get one already tells me you made up your mind because no one who posts here will tell you otherwise

Most of us have multiple bikes just in case but the fatbike is our go to 99% of the time

Very good deal on used rides in the for sale section plus lots of great LBS that have a vast selection actually there are too many now to
Choose from

I just do what my idol Jim V tells me to do and got a specialized. Hehehe

If I can start again my first fatbike would be the carbon comp now on sale for a stupid low price of 2800 and be done with this upgrade guesswork Shit most of us went through.

I wish specialized would stop the sale now so I don't get tempted to sell the Miata and get a new ride.

1. Go to LBS
2. See if they have a demo bike you can ride on trail
3. Repeat as often as needed until you find the one that will meet your immediate and future needs and wants
4. Ride that as hard and as often as you can without smiling

I can't do number 4

Roger that, captain. I'm just excited to get back on trails. Hard not to be a little jumpy. I just personally can't justify spending thousands on a bike. As you can tell, I am anxious to get myself going, and was hoping to find myself a good entry level platform. 650 would make my wife smile more than 1500, but what happens after the initial buy is between me and the LBS/UPS delivery guy.

Being that you are jacked up like this I have to say take a deep breath. I seriously want you to ride all bikes and many. Stay with your initial budget and buy the bike that feels right.

My biggest reason I suggest is because you live by the beach. If fat is where you go please go 190/197. Fatter wider more better for sand.

But again don't leave out any wheel size or format. Just keep demoing bikes.

I'm breathing. 😎

I still plan on the demo rides for sure. This one just popped up so I figured I would email to see if it was even still available, and check with those who know better than myself. Keeping options open...

I will be different here. For that price that is a solid bike to get you started. Yes there are some sub par parts on there, yes it is heavy, but from what you are saying you are just getting back and are looking to get your bearing.

Motobecane has a lot of tarnish here as it is a mail order brand and not from a local bike shop. let's forget about that for now.

I know several people with that bike and have ridden one. For the price I am impressed. For what is offered in that craigslist ad I am more impressed, especially with those rims.

Buy now, figure out if fatbikes are for u. If so, no upgrades to that bike, and buyer a lighter bike next year.

I have 10+ bikes. 27, 27+,29,29+, etc.

Got em All

27+ is the shit

Fat bikes are fun in sand and snow, but I just don't get em in other conditions.

27+ gives you the rollover of 29 an the traction of fat.

Give it a hard look.

Most can also run 29er wheels.

@jdog I hear ya. If I had the cash, I would do the same. I just collect surf and snowboards for the time being. This will be my fist bike purchase in 20+ years. Too many hobbies.

Thanks for this thread I have been lurking on this site since July and was going to post the same question in a month or so. The only difference is I bought a bikesdirect 29er in July for 500 because I wasnt sure mtbing was for me. Well I pretty much rode that thing everyday till about 3 weeks ago due to work. Time to upgrade and I was thinking FS 29er but someone let me try their mukluk at lewis morris and now my world has been turned upside down for the past couple weeks I have been spending all my free time reading about Fatbikes (and 29+/27+). It will be my only mtb and im thinking I am going to go with a Trek Farley 7... or maybe a stache 7.... or a salsa beargrease.... or..... damn. Dont know what this post has to do anything. Ive been drinking.

@Johnny Utah thank you. That was more or less exactly how I am looking at it. And I completely understand supporting your local shop. Not trying to ruffle feathers.
I was going to post this as an option earlier but feared getting flamed and like to support the shops.

Just be prepared for some maintenance things like greasing the hubs or re-paking the bottom bracket.

Many of my friends started out on that bike. It is a gateway to greAter things. Plus it rides pretty well.

If you hate it you will get your $ back. If you upgrade to another bike you will get your $ back.

Act fast, as I am sure someone from
This site has read that ad and is all over that deal. If it fit a friend of mine I would have bought it.
