New to MTB

Hello, my name is Scott and my son is Corbin, he is 12. I am here because he has decided to make MTB his next adventure. He is a competitive skateboarder, rides freestyle BMX, snowboards, learning to surf and did indoor sky diving this year. No, I cannot keep up with him, lol. I am hoping this will be something we can do together. We are in SJ and I found some places to start riding on a website, I think singletrack(?). Just want to see if anyone has any tips or best places to ride to get started. I am researching as much as I can to learn everything, but there is a lot to learn here. I am definitely a beginner so would like to stay away from sandy trails to get started. Thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome...what a great way to hang with the boy! Lots of good trail insights on this site...if you ever make it up to central jersey around Sandy Hook I'll bring you guys to Huber Woods and Hartshorne for a tour...

Bring him to the last mtbnj short track race, there are other kids present and a great beginner level course to ride, btw- welcome

Welcome. Try hitting Allaire, some trails are a bit sandy but most are firm and flow really well. Its a good beginner destination and its probably not too far from where you live.

Welcome. I'm jealous. I've got 2 girls and neither has interest in my MTB passion.

In case you have figured it out yet, click on "Forums" tab up top and then down the bottom of that page are the North, Central and South riding locations.

Links to Central and South here for your convenience:

If something looks interesting and you want to know more about it. Just post a new thread or question in an existing thread and the knowledgeable locals will surely lend their guidance.

Welcome -
i'm sure we can find some stuff to do!
there are also summer clinics, and group rides/with a social twist. check in often.

oh, define south a bit more!

Welcome aboard,
We are going to be starting the beginner rides at Allaire soon.
Plus Mercer county park has some nice trails plus they are doing some TM work Saturday this is a good way to learn the park...
We are also having our first TM of the season at Allaire this Sunday and will be doing a ride afterwards...
If you have a smart phone get the app maprika you can find most of the parks in map for it and it will help if you get to a park you don't know.
Remember having fun should always be the goal...

You are one lucky man to have a kid like that! Another fun and relatively mellow place to ride is six mile run. Very kid friendly but equally fun for big kids like us. Just be sure to avoid going after it's recently rained or trails (and your bikes) will suffer. Have fun!

Thank you all for the kind words and tips, it is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to meeting and riding with as many of you as we can. Forgot to mention in my original post that we are in Turnersville, not too far from Camden County College. I think that is going to be our first stop. I'm picking up his bike on Saturday and hopefully mine today. I know mine will need some work so not sure how fast we will be hitting the trails. Hopefully within a week or so.

Where is this race at?
Found it, unfortunately it is a little over two hours away and with what we already have going on I can't make it.

I wish we were available, this is really good to get people involved with the sport. I will be keeping an eye out for the beginner rides.

Hey @mudjnky, let me know when you want a tour of CCC. I have been going there for a about a year now.

I need to pay the kindness of a tour forward! @MikeP showed me around about a year back and it was a great tour until I took a nasty spill.

The March Mayhem race in medford (3/26) might be a fun place to drop by and meet some
people, take in the scene with the kid. there are a few junior races to chose from too - with
different levels of skill. here is the info https://www.bikereg.com/march-mayhem-mountain-bike-race

racing is just a small part of it all - but fun to watch what is possible, and test oneself.

if you stop by here enough, you'll find humor in how the lines are debated........
