The (unofficial) Tour de Fat

Turning the corner, and taking a new path.
It will be vaguely familiar, but unlike the others before.
The destination is different - start the journey, and friends will join you along the way.

- not lord of the rings worthy, but enough metaphor to get ya on a bike?

Matty, we could sugar coat this, but that isn't what you need (you have obviously been sugar coating quite a few things over the last two years 😉). Focusing on +/* a few lbs is "just a number", +80? (i am guessing here) lbs is beyond that. I am not preaching, you know this. The answers are easy and it involves spinning your feet in 14" circles, something you know you love to do. Start small, start big, just start.

All I'm saying is, being of a similar age to Matty and having lost over 60 lbs off my all time high myself (was 80, but it's been a bad year), I think it's important to focus on the enjoyment of the activity, any activity, not the number. It's way too easy to become demoralized if the number is the primary focus.

If the activity is tied to the number it becomes a chore and eventually, the activity will cease.

Just my opinion... And we all know what opinions are like. 😉

Dan-

Stop eating on Mondays.

Let me know how I can help. I can buy an industrial sized stapler and semi-permanently close up your pie hole. I was once way bigger than you are now so we both know it can be done.

Matty, I believe a lot of your struggle are stress related.

When I met you around 2008ish? you were unemployed but riding your bike regularely and did not drink. This is when you were in your best shape, when you started working it all went down hill. That NYC job, the manager gig, now your own gig...you need to find balance at work. Without balance we become too stressed which leads to the need to comfort ourselves from excess stress. Remove the stress and you will be able to refrain from over-eating and excessive drinking. Slow down, relax and choose your own future...you fat fuck🙂

Matty- sorry to hear where you are at. The good news is you know what the culprits are, you've come back from this before and you have a ton of support here. You got this.

I've got more to say, but I'll tell you when I see you. Let's go ride fatbikes and not get beers afterwards.

@mattybfat

I feel your pain. Since the baby was born, I have ridden a total of about 6 times. Most of the rides were super mellow as my fitness has completely gone to shit.

Add on the fact that I am eating horrible and drinking beer every weekend and I have officially ended up in a bad place physically as well. It's certainly having an affect on my mood.

Let's get over this hump together and ride.

We can all be supportive. We can all tell you of our examples. I myself lost 65 pounds, blood pressure is text book now and despite a genetic propensity for high cholesterol, that is also at acceptable levels. It was no magic...eat better, exercise. Easy words, hard actions. I can also tell you that I did not give up all treats, I love bacon, pizza, etc. And I drink in excess on occasion. It is possible to have a balance.

In my own experience and in my efforts to help my daughter, I learned that it needs to come from within. You need to decide that it is time for a change. Then, others, especially your family, can support you. If they love you and you open up to them, they will help and support you. If you have people around you that are not supportive, FUCK THEM!!! As an example, if you share with your family that you really want to exercise 5 times a week for an hour or more, I am sure that a loving support system will suggest that is a good idea and they might even help you find the time. Maybe even take on some extra tasks that you are carrying on your shoulders. GOOD friends are a true value here, too.

Anyway, it seems like you are acknowledging that you have some things you want to change. Set your mind to them. Write them down. Say them out-loud. Whatever it takes for YOU to commit to them.

Oh, and nice tires!

Hey Matty; I feel your pain; my weight goes up and down as well and last winter I had a long stretch of the blues...from november to april it was pretty much just drag myself out of bed just in time to get dressed and go to work. I did very minimal exercise in the evenings and was fat and depressed.

honestly, biking is a big motivator for me. When the weather broke last april, I got in a couple of road rides and it motivated me to get going. I think I had my most enjoyable year of road riding and i am still out there 4-5 days a week with the bike thanks to this warm weather. I enjoy biking A LOT and it is more enjoyable if I am in decent shape so biking motivates me to eat better and less and do other exercise as well. Obviously, this puts me in good frame of mind too.

I have met you and Patty a couple of times - you gave me a great tour of DP/Stephens/Mooch a few summers ago and have met you guys at a couple of JORBA fests and a kids race last summer at the boy scout camp - you guys are wonderful people and great for our sport.

so my encouragement is this: ride your bike! you deserve it!

Rainy day Thursday's are all right in December as long as it's 50+ degrees out. Patty's December work schedule has been just brutal and every time she has had off she asks me to ride with her. Normally I say no can't well fuck that I am not letting this over rated work crap stop me for now on. I am my own boss and I will dictate when where and how long 🙂

We dilly Dallying around to see if rain was gonna put a damper on our plans until we said screw it lets do it. We always have the same dilemma as where to ride and as usual 9 out of 10 times we go to Deer Park for a quicky.

Having this barrel gut sure makes for a slow go up the damn hills but I didn't get off the bike today. Though some hills required a stop and catch some wind. It's funny because Patty and I trade places throughout the ride. I let her go on the climbs and she lets me go on the down hills. Speaking of downhills today was the first ride on my new rubbers. I have been on Maxxis minions for DH for like ever and when I saw a fat version I was all giddy. Like their DH Brothers these fat versions can be tipped all the way over to where you can drag your knee on the ground. These tires are the absolute bomb. Not once did the break loose in the wet rock/leaf covered trails. Most importantly not a smidge of self steer. Maxxis hit a home run here.

How you doing?

So yesterday after an interesting teen night, Patty and I planed to get a ride in. We were slow to get out and had other things to get done. Packed the bikes and are things and headed out the door. After dropping Laura we decided to bag riding and go back and get her so we can all go for a hike closer to where we needed to be which was SAMs club. Hike went off then by time we got to SAMs everyone was hungry so no SAMs, off to Don Joses. Then realized we were close to Dads who wanted us to grab the kids gift. A nice HP all in one. Set that up later in the evening during the Jets game. Anyhow got sucked into my Dads new 4K tv as he threw in Gravity on 4K blue ray. I guess you can see where my dad likes his retirement life. His setup is better then movie theater shit. He doesn't skimp even the audio is mind blowing. So after an hour we are like gotta go we come back to finish another time. Off to SAMs to give lots a money.

Sunday today.
I had the day to me but I decided to hit church with the family for feel good reasons. Actually we have some close friends who are dealing with a serious situation and felt the need to go to the holy place and pray for them. @ambrosestafford post hits you good as in life is good and I need this in my life.
Patty and kids went to a cousin. bday party in NY so it gave me the rest of the day to go ride. I have been wanting to link my old hood RR trails together. I will leave it out here as us old Blairstown townies call the Paulinskill track the lower tracks and cut off the upper tracks to make it easier for me.

So my main plan was to start at Johnsonburgh at the place I remember as young boy that my grandfather would deliver or buy grain for the farm. Nothing left there but the vision is still there. This is of course an old RR stop. I am gonna ride the roads down to the lower tracks in the marksboro area and ride to Columbia and pick up the upper tracks. Well as I cruised along I came to the conclusion that Columbia was not in the cards. Legs were heavy almost the whole ride probably because well I haven't been riding very much. This turned out to be a really good decision because I knew the upper track were gonna be heavy with ballast and a steady up grade. Side note I have motoed these tracks since I was 8. As predicted it was a slow painful trip back. It was really nice to see Motos out there too to this day. Passed a good group. Without them those upper tracks would not be rideable.

My legs took a beating but it felt awesome. I think next time I will go the opposite way and get the rough stuff out of the way. Those lower tracks are for cross bikes but those upper track you got to go Fat or go home.

Great to read Matty

Lol
I rode a bike today this marks my second ride of the year according to strava. I did learn the rollers after a third try then haven't been on since.

I forgot that in order to free your cluttered space you need to find time to clear it. This is somethings I lost and need to get myself back to. It rained and thunder and I was relaxed because I was alone on a bike pushing myself to my limit. This is much better then surfing my couches which is where I have been finding myself because of work overload.

Here is the plan
Are you out of shape
Haven't been riding
Just getting back
Beginner
Wanting to introduce a teen
Feel overwhelmed in group setting

I am gonna start a Tuesday beginners ride 5:30 in deer park and one weekend ride with at either DP, North, Stephens, KVSP or Mahlon.

I have been at this a long time so I can help you while you come and help me get back to where I belong.

Who's in?
