Jshort’s bike thread

Really good recap. Excellent start to the season. Still winging the rest of the season or are you putting a plan together? Maybe you can get that state championship you were cheated out of years ago, this one would feel even better.

@GratefulRider gave me the mug, so it's cool.

Which race is the state championship?

Congrats Jeremy! Really killing it this season. Love the recaps, since most are slacking on writing them, so please keep them coming! Impressive work being able to keep such a lead along with all the dismounts for tire checks.

As for the championship, have you inquired about getting first place points towards the series for H2H #1?

In 2009 Wawayanda was my first mountain bike race. The golden days of Cat 3 (for me anyway). I was racing my 32lb Turner Sultan with 40psi in my Geax segauros. I remember that post race pretty well. Me and @HTPaul were hanging out waiting for results and when they were posted, we looked at each other like “Oh shit!”. The groups back then were pretty big and I had no idea where I finished and when I saw that I won I was pretty surprised.

Then in 2010 or 11, I remember racing in Cat2 and @DanBrodeen and I were battling it out. He had a pretty big gap going into the second lap and was super strong in the tech. I started catching glimpses of him with a few miles to go. I eventually bridged that gap him and was able to pass him right at the end of the race for the win. Those are really great memories.

I’ll probably remember yesterday in the same way. I knew it was going to be a wet one, and I’ve been through this enough that I was prepared. When these chunky grips get saturated on the drive up, they slip like crazy. Not this time!

I got there pretty early (8:15ish) considering I wasn’t going to do much warming up. I sat in my car for half an hour and got my gear together and thought about what gear to wear. Over the years I found its best to take a bunch of stuff with you and make a game time decision on what to wear when the weather is like it was. Summer kit, arm and knee warmers, and my wind vest was the winning combination. I also put on my riding pant and rain jacket for the warm up.

About 8 of us were lined up in the 19-39 group. The rain really seemed like it put everyone in a “I’m just glad I actually showed up” mentality. We were all petty mellow and (at least I) was relaxed for a race.

Once they sent us off I just wanted to be near the front going into the ST. I didn’t know most of the guys lined up and I was worried I’d get stuck behind some sloppy riders and somebody would take off. I didn’t have anything to worry about because nobody wanted to push. Post race discussions seemed to indicate this was a theme in all groups, even pro. As soon as someone got in front, everyone got behind them. Nobody made anything resembling an attack. So with 50 yards until the entrance to the singletrack, I did just enough work to go in first. Once I got in, I put my head down and started climbing at race pace. Pre-riding told me the line and I cleanly made it to the top. I look back, not sure what to expect, but I saw Perry 20 seconds behind me, and I didn’t see anyone even close to him.

Finish the prologue and head onto the race course and somebody said “you’re in 6th with the leaders about a minute ahead” . I didn’t know what they were talking about, but then I realized they thought I was in the pro group which went before us. I’ll take it.

I went into a tempo pace concentrating on clean lines and riding smooth. The first half of the loop is really rocky and a mistake would end up with a mechanical or flat tire. It wasn’t that muddy and I got enough traction on the rocks, but the roots were like ice. A few years ago I would be getting off and dismounting over some of these sections, but yesterday I was able to ride everything pretty clean. I caught the 5th place pro at the end of the first lap and passed him going up a climb.

Going into the second lap I knew I had a decent lead and decided to go pretty conservative for the rest of the race. I figured If someone caught me I’d have enough in my legs to put out a good effort and put a gap on. I was able to ride the rocks cleanly again for the most part. The course was much muddier having the cat 2 field go through it. I took my time and made sure I didn’t go otb or make any other stupid mistakes.

Nick (the pro I had passed) went by me sometime in the first half of the second lap but never made it too far ahead. Right around this time we started running into the back of the cat 2 field. There was a ton of them, and none of them wanted to move over. Luckily there are a bunch of places to pass, so I’d just wait for a good spot and zip past them. I don’t think they knew the Cat 1 riders would be coming up so they figured I was someone they were racing. It wanst a big deal.

I started seeing the MTBNJ kits starting with Alex. Then came up on @Norm, who I was surprised to see out there. Then a few minutes later I saw @Dominique. I was pretty drained at this point and seeing the teammates gave me a little boost. The last little steep climb I passed Nick again.

From there on out I went into a “lets just get this thing over with” mode and was pretty happy to see the finish line.

Post race was fun even though we were freezing our asses off. Norm bought out the burrito vendor and we all camped under the tent munching.

There was some confusion with the results and the scorers even thought I may have cut the course (here in my strava link.. https://www.strava.com/activities/562453062 no cutting here) . For a chip timing, they sure had a lot of bugs in their system. It really makes you appreciate how good the MTBNJ crew handles its business in this aspect (actually, in all race promotion aspect). I didn’t mind to much, but nowadays people expect things like this to be accurate the first time. And rightfully so. I also heard a few racers went off course which is unfortunate. Its never intentional but they still get DQ’d. As far as I saw, the course was marked well enough and they had 3 or 4 guys out there directing traffic. Even with that, when you are at redline and gasping for air, you can make a mistake.

My time was 1:51 and change which was a pretty long race for me. I have to keep building on these races and working on maintaining my top end for longer periods of time. I am hoping Jungle, Lew Mo, and KVSP have bigger turnouts and you never know who will show up. I also started thinking about maybe racing some races outside of H2H. Bear Creek is one of them. My time was till the second best in Cat 1 so I am still pretty confident I will compete in the bigger fields.

I celebrated last night with 3 of these guys:

sounds like a perfect storm/jorbas most wanted for you and your skills. if you had a rating system like madden for riding in wet trails it would easily be 99

Nicely done. that cockpit is clean...

Celebrating a win with beer and bacon... HAHAHA - good stuff

BTW - I liked the comment about the wife support on FB / Instagram

Between that and going to an XL frame, I was pretty comfortable on those rocks.

Nice work, that was a solid time given the fact that you were able to kick back and chill. I found that despite the race it wasn't that treacherous...slippery, but very little mud.

I did enjoy that brief moment when Tim came over...."whose bike is this...#35...ya you dq'd for cutting the course" Based on my time....which was totally wrong lol.

Yea, you're response was good. When he said my time was up there with the pro's, you took all of 1 second to say "no it wasn't !"
Thanks Utah...

Ahh... Good times.. Lol

Lol, yeah sorry totally did not mean for it to come out that way... This was after like round 3 of them trying to figure out my time.... I was starting to get a little annoyed.

I just like to make you feel bad....not that you do, but I like to try...

Great job dude!

Can't wait for you to tear my legs off at Jungle.

I'm on a cruise next week and will be eating and drinking continuously for 7 days... I may not be in good shape...🙂
