Going Long and Hard.

holy cow...just stumbled on this thread and got sucked into that great video of the race...good luck! for what it's worth, i'm the guy that you and a few other dudes were giving a hard time for riding my 2.5" skinny wheeled trek on the first snowfall at 6MR a few weeks ago (thanks Strava flyby)! i guess that was part of your training for this race?

again, good luck and be safe!

I'm here. Started unpacking, have many things to do. It warmed up to -19 during the drive down. Thank god. I did go grocery shopping en route and bought gas for the stove so at least my to do list is a little shorter. I'm going now. Break time is over.

Time for a generator hub?? Five iPods?!?! I guess it's lighter to just swap them as they die than to carry any more charge banks.

problem with a dyno hub in these races is youre not going fast enough to get a reliable amount of juice out of it. you need at least 10mph for it to really be worth it.

even in arizona a lot of the terrain was so technical and so steep that i was averaging 5mph
the solar charger charged most of our stuff pretty much the entire trip and that wasnt nearly as expensive as my dyno setup

It's got to be a combination of the battery life and the need for playlist variety. That's a long time to be stuck with the same tunes in high rotation.

I may have missed a conversation about packing / carrying a gun for protection on these Ultra races.

Would think a small handgun would be appropriate to protect against non hibernating predators.

Good Luck Jim! Stay safe and bring me back a souvenir.

.

Generally a small handgun is only good for shooting the least liked person in your group not for the actual predator. Or to put yourself out of your misery when a bear does start mauling you
