The DIY thread - DIYourself

From my expert inspection I believe its from all the leaves branches garbage (and rats) filling up the hole. It drains but very slowly when it rains a lot. I think it can be unclogged by sticking your arm in the hole (2x2 ft wide 3-4 ft deep) but I don’t want to stick my hand in. I think if it was cleared monthly it should be fine.

We play noon to dark but the actual start time is more like 1pm.

@qclabrat @fidodie

Call 511, or 611, or 711 or whatever it is. They should eventually send someone to clean it if you report it enough times.

Yesterday’s diy involved the replacement of my dryers gas valve solenoids. Not a bad job. Parts cost was $9.17 and I think I pulled about $4.56 cents in change out of the bottom of the machine. Gotta love a little cash back!

Today’s diy was a little more exciting thanks to the 21 y/o weekend receptionist at the shop. Turns out his Jeep might be trail rated but not traffic light rated.

Should be good to go after a delivery of certified pre owned parts from the junkyard

I came home from work to find .50" of water in basement. Ran down the steps and looked over at water heater, no issue. Then went over to sump pump, the pit is backed up and pump is not working. Breakers all ok, nothing tripped. The pump is not working, it's 4:30 And local plumbing supply closes at 5:00. I run over and pick up a pump before they close. General Plumbing supply in Union sells good stuff, much better to deal with then Home Depot.

I get what I need, pump, male adapter and new check valve. I have glue and pipe at home. In no time I pipe it in and let the pump suck out water in basement. While the pump is working I go up and eat dinner and read the installation instructions. The one thing I did not do is drill an air release. The last one I installed lasted 20 years and I didn't do the air release. Screw it after dinner I went down and drilled a hole before check valve for air release, maybe I'll get 25 years out of this pump.
@capedoc I guess it's sump pump season, you jinxed me😉

Zoeller, they make a nice pump.
Yup. We used to sell zoeller but now we sell hydromatic. Still good.
My zoeller has the 12v backup pump. Poo riggy you should have that if no pump means wrecked basement. Works on a car battery and trickle charger. So it works if the main pump fails or power is out.
I never hooked up my backup since the only thing my pump does is lift service for the laundry and basement sink.

Yeah I have 2 pits, one is for the battery back up. That trickle charger must be broken, it never works. After 20yrs in my house I just kind of deal with the .50" of water that happens every 8yrs or so when something goes wrong with pump. The important stuff is above the high water mark.

cleaned up my internets closet.
prepping to blow up the 4th bedroom and actually make it usable space instead of storage for everything I own that has a plug that i'm not currently using and boxes of garbage my wife feels too guilty to throw out.

it's also the only room in my house with carpet, which will have to go. fuck carpet. not to mention how gross this particular carpet is.

shit closet

i still like the idea of all this junk in the closet, but there's no electrical outlet in there.
went to add an outlet but they built this closet wall with the 2x4's sideways, so it's not dep enough. barely jam a handy box in there but it's ALMOST flush enough to work.
So i padded it out later with a piece of plywood that will eventually get painted.
gotta ditch the shitboard shelves too

done, just need an outlet cover. don't make fun of my mismatched outlets @fidodie, it's in a fucking closet! 😛

just gotta vacuum and clean up the rest of the hell hole.
oh that's not a personal cell spot, that's a way to get a $200 router for $50 by buying a cell spot from t-mobile and then flashing the standard router firmware onto it, and then flashing DD-WRT to have a powerhouse of a router.

oh yeah upgraded the last FP box, and trimmed it out because that too didn't fit right because the inside of that wall had a sheet of 1/2" plywood behind it to mount the old breaker box. It was easier to do this than to dismantle the wall and get that piece of plywood out.
I'll find a more appropriate trim piece for the top. This is inside a closet though so really not a big deal.
gotta find the other 3 screws for the cover plate too.

not sure why that 7th plate was missing, i just took it out of the box like that. weird.

I didn't use the other 20a circuits cause they went to electric radiators that are no longer needed.

Here's another project that went wrong I did on Tuesday.
Trying to mount ATV tires on my tractor. I tried for 20 minutes to use my air compressor to get the tire seated on the rim, just couldn't do it. Tire was just not wanting to be wide enough at the beads and it was deformed from shipping.
The ol ether in the tire trick worked great, but it flame throwered a crazy blast of fireball at me and it destroyed my hand and burned off all my hair.
of course I'm a total moron for doing it, BUT IT WORKED.
But now my veins are tattooed to my skin. All those lines are my veins cause they stuck up the most. So dumb.
even dumber for not setting up the video before attempting.

Maybe you should quit DIY'ing going off your last few posts. Know any contractors who take Bitcoin?

I think we all owe Luke here $20

I also did closets. I posted about reframing the shared wall between our boys' rooms somewhere in this thread. We re-worked the space to add bigger closets. The rooms were finished last spring and finishing up the closets has been on the winter/rainy day to do list since then.

Cut all but the 4" top shelf cleats out of 4x8 sheets. Seemed cheaper and gave me an excuse to buy a table saw. Now I just need to paint and hang the doors back on.

When I was a kid I saw my dad do that trick on his Kenworth's tires a few times. Looking back, I'm not sure about the risk/reward.
