James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

So nothing of note really happened today anywhere at all, on the Internet, life etc.But last night...

Man did Chloe Kim kill it last night or what? I don't care what size the pipe is, she brought her A game and ended it on her first run. You know, I don't care if you are a newbie to this sport or a fan since day 1 - that last run was legit. While it may or may not be the best performance of the Olympics it was pretty damn good. On that note, you don't have to be a world-class chef to enjoy an amazing meal nor do you need to be an art critic to enjoy The Met. Some things in life are subjective, and with subjectivity comes the point that YOU are the subject of that observation. So maybe you do think that Fowles TD pass was the best ever thrown. It's your party. You can pop the champagne whenever you want.

I think another impressive thing is that she was the heavy favorite coming in, and she didn't crack under the pressure. That's what I always worry about on a human level. Mikaela hasn't done a run yet, and she has gotten so damn much press that anything but a smashing victory will be a disappointment to the media. Any of these athletes that are just expected to win must have so much pressure, and so much anxiety, that when they actually come through it's nice to see.

Also on that note, I like to see when people win as opposed to when someone else loses. Like if the Chinese girl last night did like 3 1080s or whatever, in a row, you know maybe she is the gold medal winner today and then awesome for her. But she would have won it, as opposed to Kim crashing out 3 times and losing it. I hate seeing the pressure get to these kids and crack them. Sure, some of these guys are old men skiing and shooting. But a lot of them are kids. The 2 snowboard events we watch where the Americans won (Red, Chloe), they are both just about 5 years older than our 2 oldest, which is crazy.

Anyway, looking forward to more good stuff tonight. Mike Tirico says figure skating....and more. WTF that's it?

Move That Target North

Yesterday San Diego was cancelled. Today Seattle being put on the calendar. Tentative date the week of March 12th.

Like I said, sporadic to say the least. I feel like there will be a Duke redux in there too.

Bikes and Colds

My cold seems to be in that hour-by-hour erratic phase. One hour I feel fine, the next I feel like shit. I had set 1:00 as a light ride time today but my head was swimming so I skipped it and worked on the road bike a bit. Cleaned up the drivetrain, lubed the RD pulleys, re-lubed the BB/cranks, degreased the chain. I'll lube it up before the ride tomorrow, assuming I am good to go. I also took the tire off the CX bike and put it on the road bike, to keep the trainer tire on the trainer.

I guess I am resting due to this cold. Last night I slept better but at 3am I woke up with a brutal sore throat. So I just got up, made myself this hot mix medicine drink that D got me, and just did work for an hour while I let the medicine do it's thing. Went back to bed until 7:00 so in all I got about 5.5 hours of sleep. Not the worst but I need more tonight. Really struggling to kick this thing right now and not being able to sleep hurts that effort.

How has evolution not addressed this issue yet?

Monday

Oh shit! I found out today that technically we have off. But IDK if that amounts to anything.

One hour I feel fine, the next I feel like shit.
Yeah, I'm fighting something too. I feel good and then wiped out. No coughing of sinus issue other then a stuffy head with headache and occasional night sweats. After working outside yesterday i bailed on a 2hr tempo road ride.

Something is in the air for sure. I landed in Chicago yesterday only to feel like absolute crap. Cough won’t quite and my head feels split down the middle. I pretty much laid in bed at the hotel from 4pm till this morning.

Sick, away from home and meetings all week. Couldn’t be better

That (along with any of my own bike maintenance) unfortunately went out the window when Bob came along.

Have two more and throw in year around sports... Fuk'n Formula 1 pit crew MTB mechanic over here... and when something isn't working... I'm like Son of bitch, I don't have time for this shit...

I was telling @pearl the other day how frustrating it can be when you just need to remount a tubeless tire with a slow leak and a whole weekend goes by and it doesn’t get done.

Most of my bike maintenance happens in 10 min spurts.

Over the Hump

I got 8 hours of sleep last night, which seems to have been either the cause or the effect of getting over the hump of this Cold Hill. Today was much better than yesterday, and even though I still had my ups and downs, the ups were as if I had no cold left at all, and the downs were minor headaches, and congestion. Definitely on the right path here which I'm happy with. I used to live with people years ago that would relish being sick. It gave them an excuse to stay in bed for days on end. I am not those people. I dislike being sick. Usually it is an inconvenience. This time it was a downright drag.

With that in hand, I got back on the bike today and virtualed my way to London. I have to say the London course is much less interesting than the Watopia course. Thankfully Richmond is only 1 day a week, which was pretty boring the one day I did it. I have to confess to going out and trying to find information on new Zwift courses being added and found myself geeking out to zwiftinsider.com. Now I am motivated to get to level 10 so I can check out the Mayan Jungle. To answer that question - I think this is where your subscription dollars are going - world development. As far as I am concerned, world development > bike handling gameplay logistics.

So I did an hour and a few minutes and felt pretty fine at 213w for the ride. Often times I feel weak riding off a cold like this but I did not today. I did sweat a metric shit ton, which is probably not surprising as my body tends to retain water when it is under any duress at all. So it was good to get the sweat out.

@seanrunnette invited me to ride tomorrow at 7am. As tempted as I am, I'm going to try and sleep until 7 then ride outside despite the temptation to get to the Mayan Jungle. I hear it's going to be 60+ tomorrow? Is it going to rain?

The Olympic Dream-sicle was put on hold tonight while we went back to the MPAC for a show.

Tao: Drum Heart

Ok so this is one of those things where I can sit here and say how awesome this was, AND THEN you can go buy tickets to see the same show in New Brunswick Friday night.

Or you can just go get tickets now:
https://www.stnj.org/event/tao-drum-heart

So let's rewind. A few weeks ago we went to that Hollywood Effects Show, where we took the kids as part of a Christmas present we gave them. The show was alright. I mean the first half was kind of a dud and the second half was better. All in all it wasn't the best thing we have seen at the MPAC but there was some interesting stuff in there. D had bought the tickets when they were running a sale and it seemed a fair gamble. It ended with explosions so the kids enjoyed it on that level.

Fast forward to 2 days after that, and the MPAC sent D an email saying that due to technical difficulties, they were offering free tickets to everyone who went. Honestly I think they may have gotten some complaints about the quality of the show and felt it was the right thing to do. One of the shows available was Tao: Drum Heart. We didn't even need to discuss it, as we both picked that one as the replacement. The MPAC got back to her and said: you got it, 5 free tickets to replace the previous show.

I cannot say enough about the MPAC. I think we have been there 6 times in the last 2 years and the place is great. I know a lot of people I talk to don't really even know anything about it. You are really doing yourself a disservice by not making yourself aware of it.

I'm not getting paid for this: https://www.mayoarts.org/

So let's recap:

1. The MPAC is excellent
2. The show was excellent

I mean it was almost 2 hours of awesome drumming, some acrobatics, stage playfulness, silliness, awesomeness, and an overall fantastic show. Last year we saw STOMP at the MPAC and I commented that I liked that better than Riverdance. I love the loud art. I don't know if that is a thing: Loud Art. But if it is, both Stomp and this show are exactly that - Loud Art.

I <3 Loud Art.

So to recap:

1. Go see this show Friday night
2. Go check out the MPAC and get on their mailing list
3. Rejoice in how awesome it is to not be sick
4. Because being sick sucks

YES- it’s a fucking drag. Check your head if you take in arms with the fact that your body is under attack.

Considerations- I will have a mask on during the flight home tomorrow. I don’t get people who knowingly travel sick and do not consider others.

It's not gone yet. This seems to be my pattern. I have a decent day, then that night I sleep less. I didn't go to bed too late. Ok, it was 12:30 but we wake up at 7:00 so 6.5 isn't a bad number. Well...at 5:00 I am awake, wide awake, for at least half an hour. Eventually I go to bed again and wake up at 7, and I feel like I have taken a step back. I won't bore you with the details of the morning but today it seemed like every one of my streaming radio stations was on mode: Suck Hog. Between fundraisers, not connecting, playing just junk, and I suppose my mood, they were all rubbish today.

Then my man @jmanic saved my day with this suggestion: Beck station + Pandora. Nailed it. 10 of 10. Give my man a gold medal. And he didn't even text me tick dick, or dick tick, or whatever. Nothing in appropriate at all. I rewarded him by suggestion he make some edits to his current workload and introducing various Harry Potter terms in it.

I have 2 ways I can go with the narrative right now. Inappropriate texts as it pertains to the Olympics, or Harry Potter. Frankly we have enough bad/negative things in the world that I will go with Harry Potter. The other topic is a veritable miasma of discussion and while I think it is worth it, I really don't want to have it here. So please let's focus our attention to Harry Potter, currently on book 5.

I have promised D and Julia I would read all 7 of the book before we go to Spring Break and hit up Universal. I started in January and I am now on book 5. Those of you unfamiliar with the books will think that hey, doing pretty well. Those of you know the series know that even though I am almost 200 pages into book 5, I have not yet read half the total pages of the 7 book series. Yeah, it's that back-loaded. In all, I am on a pace that requires I read about 40 pages a day between now and the 3rd-to-last day of Spring Break. Given the subject material, 40 pages is not a lot. At the same time, making sure you get 40/day is actually harder than it may seem. I should probably just dedicate 1 day a week to read 300 and then be done with it for the week.

The story is what it is - most of you know it. I have been to Universal before - last year at the ServiceNow conference it was the end party. But I hadn't read the books nor seen the movies. Now I have seen much of the movies (not all of them) and read almost half of the pages of the books. When we get down there, I will be able to slay HP trivia with the best of them. That HP stands for Harry Potter, not Hewlett Packard.

On that note, this is really where my mind goes when I say I rode the Swiffer. It's a combination of Zwift, Swiffer, and the Quidditch concept. So I imagine myself riding this Swiffer broom in the basement every day. Adding it all up, and my not feeling well again, I went broom-style and just stayed inside. Felt a little better on the bike but still hacking up Ned's Left Lung, or Atomic Dustbin. But I did not kill my television.

Sorry for those of you who were hoping I would get outside today. But on top of that, we have been given a red alert at work, such that ALL other work besides the Minnesota Garbage Barge is to be put on hold, while we try and sweep the deck of that particular barge free of bugs. So while I was riding my broom, I was answering texts from my boss, who was trying to fix defects that I have the info on. So it was kind of a necessary step on my day on many levels.

Tonight I have very little in terms of plans. I need to catch up on some newspapers from the last few days as well as have dinner at some point. I think we will put the Olympics on at 8:00 then sit here and I will sweep more bugs off the USS Minnesota's deck while D polishes up a project she is working on. At 10:00 we will likely call it a night because it turns out that @UtahJoe got me sick who has now gotten D sick. So we need to try and get solid nights of sleep because this is seriously in danger of screwing up the weekend. Of course, tonight will probably be the best TV of the week and we will stay up until 1am because it's riveting, only to find out tomorrow that the gold medal winner was texting pics of his golden snitch to people who didn't want to see it.

I mean really, isn't it obvious that @jmanic should be taking my editing advice here?

Given what I was working with,
HPisms would have totally fit.
Following the Bob Dylan Stunt,
I still want to sneak Clutch lyrics into a paper someday.

Feel better, I'm hoping Utah didn't give you his acne.
