Chain Wax Discussion thread

Waxed 2 Shimano 12sp chains, 1 on the Pivot T429 with low miles and 1 backup, for TSE. Will report back. Weather looks good for the week, with only rain in the forecast on Thurs afternoon. It is damp around camp.
I'm a waxing convert. This is what the chain looked like after some mud during the Stage and just a hose washing then microfiber towel wipe.

The chain lubing tool arrived, had to test it out. The Silca drip wax does tend to flow easily onto the floor while lubing. This little lube dispensing device works, had to go two revolutions to get enough lube out of it, a little more of a squeeze of the bottle might help. Overall I'll give it a 8.5 out of 10.

My experience has been the same. I also use it with the Silca drip wax.

Squirt is actually Wax, Glenn. 🙂

If you want to go to normal drip, just pour boiling water over the chain, cassette, and chainring. It’ll come out looking brand new. It’s pretty crazy actually. This may make you want to keep using wax…. lol.

The UFO all conditions drip lube is pretty great if you’re going with a drip wax lube.

Lil update,
So i am 4000 on the road chain since wax (from new) and 2500 on the mtb and it would appear that both of them need replaced. For the mtb that would almost 3.6 times the duration my chains were lasting with oil so that is pretty damn good.

I've been noticing the MTB isn't lasting as long as I would like either, but I'm sticking with it. My chain was accidentally lubed after waxing. When this happened I was on my way to a ride and I rode it anyway, so it got worked in. Wondering if that is impacting wax adhesion (despite cleaning it 2x as much as I did before the initial waxing).

Per the escape collective podcast, Dave Rome said the best way to apply drip wax is to have the chain in the second biggest gear in the back. Spin the crank backwards while applying. Having the chain in this gear will "cross chain" it a little, opening a gap in the pins. Seems logical. IDK. I've been doing it that way and not sure I can really tell a difference.
I'm still doing the crock pot once a month or so, with drip tub top offs once a week. This is manageable for me. It's really no more time than I would spend degreasing the oil and cleaning the pulleys on a derailleur (which get super nasty with oil, but stay pretty clean with wax). And hot water is a little less messy to play with than degreasers. I think the time spent is pretty even. The only real disadvantage is not being able to apply the wax and immediately go for a ride. The drying time can be inconvenient if you forget. This is where having 2 chains come into play.
