10 - 11 speed compatibility

If the cassettes are the same width I don't see how it could possibly work. But I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
I think 11spd cassettes are wider.

You should be able to get it to work. I assume you know you will only have 10 gears to be able to shift to.

Shimano’s spacing between cogs has narrowed from 2.35mm for 10-speed to 2.18mm for 11-speed.

I've read a couple of these articles, road cassettes are narrower but mtb apparently are not.
Since the largest cogs on the mtb don't get in the way of the spokes the spacing didn't need to narrower.
seems like it should work, just as already mentioned, will loose a cog at the top or bottom

If the 10 speed and 11 speed both fit on the same hub with no spacers involved, then it can't work. The only way for it to work is for the gears 1-10 to line up with the gears 1-10 on the 11 speed cassette, or gears 2-11. That would mean the 11 speed would be 1 gear "wider" and the chains would be identical size. I assume the 11sp chain is slightly more narrow than a 10sp chain?

Basically if you have 11 gears in the same space as 10 used to be, you would need different stop points along the way from top to bottom.

My guess is that you'll get it to work "enough" in some gear range. Say gears 3-6 or so. Then the top/bottom ends will start to skip. because they don't line up properly. Maybe you get a better spread, 3-8, and you only have issues with the top & bottom 2. But the chance of getting all 10 to work I would think is unlikely.

I think you'll have a fancy looking single speed. I also don't see how this is an advantage to just picking up a cheap 10 speed cassette to actually work with your 10 speed shifter on your 10 speed hub.

can a 10 spd SLX shifter be used with an 11 spd SRAM XD cassette?
namely the XG-1150 or XG-1175

Not even close. You'll need the matching Sram GX shifter for it to work, and a Sram 11-speed Rear Derailleur. (and chain, and chainring) What is your end goal here?

planning to convert over to 11spd, starting first with lighter wheels, shifters/derailleurs later. If I really need to buy everything together, I'm going to have to save up some more

I may be in a minority, but I much prefer the 11 speed Shimano to the 11 speed sram on the mtb. It also can be run on an existing cass body.
The XT 11 speed group is not that far off. Start saving for that.

For what it is worth, I prefer sram on the road.

Why do you prefer shimano 11 over Sram? I prefer shimano 10 over sram 10, seemed to shift crisper, but so far I have been impressed with sram 11 other than the price of the cassette.

I'm in even less of a minority. I just stripped the brand new XX1 off my fat bike and converted it all back to X0 10-speed.

what's the largest SRAM/shimano cog for 10 speed, my mtbs are still stuck in 9 speed time
I'm thinking to add a wolftooth or oneup in the back, but one bike will get the 11spd upgrade

my first set of brifters were Shimano 105 didnt' like them as I have small hands and I felt the sweeps were too long
which is when I switched over the Campy for a few years, then eventually got a set of Force which I still use today
since then I've built a love affair with all things SRAM and moved most of my mtbs to them, I prefer the SRAM shifter build and feel compared to Shimano and have had no reason to switch over until now as 11spd seems to be here for good.

just to confirm XT is suppose to be comparable to X1 or X01?

XT is the next level down from XTR but also has a sturdier build to target the Trail crowd. XT is what makes the most sense unless you want more bling and want the minor weight savings.

So, whatever that lines up to on the SRAM side.

Just last night I switched to a 1x10 on my ibis, left the existing xt rear dérailleur with 10 speed cassette and threw on a 30t race face chainring, seems to be sufficient for the places I ride, before I switched I placed an order for an xtr rear dérailleur, xtr shifter, 11x42 xt casette and an 11 speed kmc chain, I'll give it a few more rides on the xt to see if will be enough of a gear range for me and if it is the whole xtr setup will be up for grabs, 400 for the lot. I have xx1 on my enduro bike and I love it can't go wrong with either in my opinion, xt/xtr or x01/xx1 shimano is more budget friendly as the xt cassette is much cheaper and doesn't require an xd hub, the rear dérailleur and shifter are cheaper too, xt will drop the price by another 80$ to 100$

Yep, and if you find that you are doing a lot of climbing but little top end speed, you can always go with a smaller front ring to get a better low end range. This is what I do with my 1x10 fat bike. 30t in the spring to fall, 24t for the snow
