2025 Garden Thread

Nice stone work as well, real clean all round. You the house gardener or have a service?
I used to do all landscaping myself but now it's a mix. I call in a service for the really hard stuff. I had a service cutting the lawn for a couple of years but now I'm back to doing it myself. I really appreciated going out for a ride and the lawn was cut when I got home. I'll prolly go back to that in the not too distant future.

Maybe the two laggards are in a shadier location? They look healthy, just not a lot of blooms.
Last year they looked like the 1 in the last image. The 2nd image plant used to be between those 2 and didn't flower. We moved it 2 yrs ago and blooms regularly.

Nice! Hydrangeas, now you'll get me talking. I went full hydrangea in a spot behind the house with eastern exposure. Gets sun until about 1 or 2. So, pretty much full sun but miss the heat of the afternoon sun, which may be a benefit for them.

This is the third iteration for this spot. Had crimson red azaleas and then knockout roses in this spot previously, both of which eventually died. I put the hydrangeas in four years ago. So far, they've been doing very well.

By the way, I live in central Hunterdon County with poorly drained red shale clay soil and they seem to be doing okay.

Pic from yesterday. The two in the back are Endless Summer "Bloomstruck" and the ones in the front are Endless Summer "Summer Crush".

I also put in three Limelight Hydrangeas about five years ago. Panicle variety. They start blooming in July and go until Sept. Need to cut them back every year or they'd be huge. Here're pics from mid-Aug last year

All hydrangeas are in a fenced area, so the deer don't get to them.
Ah yes, oak fern’s
Propagated this from my parents house anf it has gone nuts

Finally getting around to weeding the bed and planting the beans and Asian greens. Don't expect much given the neglect but I hope to get some wood chips down on the walkways to control the weeds. If timber wasn't so expensive I'd also replace the wood.PXL_20250628_173311928.MP.jpgPXL_20250629_141123664.MP.jpg
Expect the lantern flies to be bad this year. They seem so much worse down by the shore.

Paw-paws!
It's the only cluster on three trees.
They are really putting on some growth tho

Peaches are looking great.
Many have no peck marks.

IMG_8926.jpeg

The Asian pears need to be thinned.
I hit them with an antifungal to stop the cedar rust. Looks like it worked.

Tomatoes look great, getting swe3t chillies, and the garlic is just amazing. Pics to come, the storm rolled in.

Snap peas.

Jul 2 - Maybe all the heat is slowing them down finally. We're eating our way thru them. Still have about 10 pounds of them left.

Picked more raspberries (over ripe) and a few pounds of blueberries.

Geez show off, 😂

Garden has been a flop this year. I don’t want to lose it though as there is a waiting list for plots and I’ll never get one again.

So I’m weeded 2 weeks ago and replanted. Not completely lost. Too hot to weed yesterday. I’ll get back at some point soon…before I get a nasty gram from the head gardener.

Just put down bigger plants at this point. Too hot for greens to start now. I also have some stunted tomato squash plants like yours. This week will be good for plants with the temps and sun.

Don't want to brag, but these hydrangeas are effing fabulous.

In garden news, heat is getting the snap peas. It's been 4 days and only a few. Can see the vines starting to yellow at the bottoms.
IMG_8877.jpg

I did pick two zuchs, a Trident pepper (type of poblano) and an Ichiban eggplant.

Ichiban eggplant blooms are purty.

Garden activity over the last seven days. I'll post some more stuff from today later. #notshowingoff

Blueberries picked July 10

Cherries! Also, got some more zuchs.

Tomatoes look like they put everything into growing. There are tomatoes in there, just not ripe yet. Too much cow shit?

Picked some snap peas. I hadn't gone out to get them in a few days, so I threw out just as many that got too big. There won't be many more. Plants look ratty with few new blooms.
IMG_9081.jpg

Pic of the squash vines. Lots of blooms. A couple of spaghettis coming on.

I like these Early Long Purple Eggplants. Good producers. Reliable.

IMG_9092.jpg

Red bell peppers are doing well. There are a bucket load on this one plant.
