29" Rigid SS. Mary or Unit?

Christmas is coming up and I'm looking for a new toy. I figure a 2nd "back up" bike would make a nice addition.

Both of them have pretty outstanding reviews. Although, once again Kona is having a head tube issue when it comes to medium/aggressive , and the P2 29er fork the Kona comes with is a terrible piece of crap.

I've test ridden both shortly, the Kona was an 18/32 and the Mary was a 20/32, both were 16". Aside from cog choices they both felt solid but I didn't get to take any fast tight turns to see how they felt cornering.

I want a bike I don't need to baby. A quick wipe down/chain clean after a ride instead of messing with derailleurs, cable tensions, and out of whack suspensions.

I see a lot of people on the forums picking up Marys. Basically, which one will last me longer? In ten years I want this bike to be in working order like quite a few of your 26" hard tails.

Please don't make this a "company vs. company" thread, I just want to know the pros and cons of each, I don't even need a comparison to each other.

Thanks in advance, you all haven't let me down on advice yet. :hmmm:

Mary and don't look back

Mary, if the bike wasn't a girls name, it wouldn't be so easy. Buy one. Done. No worrys. Little to no maintenance. Don't take my word for it, check out a lot of peeps on this forum that did. First in the stable, second in the stable, you can't go wrong. So do the right thing 😀
Santa is coming
BTW I'm such a douchy tool. Dirty Bert said that.

Get whichever one is cheaper.

Mary has the EBB, Unit has the sliders. The Mary EBB never gave me any problems AT ALL. I'd be wondering how the sliders on the Unit hold up. I always wanted to try the sliders because of the ease to change cogs on the fly.

That is what these two bikes come down to though. All the components are garbage and you will be upgrading them as whichever one you choose becomes your primary bike. Then you will sell whatever your "primary" bike was to buy goodies for this.

That is how it always works.

So according to pearl, I should say "TO HELL WITH THIS!" and spend my money on a Niner Air-9 Carbon?

That isn't necessary. You may hate it. I'd pick the one that is easier on the wallet and beat the living shit out of it.

Well I'd like it to last a few seasons, at least. $800+ is a nice chunk of cash.

I've spent the last season beating my FS 26" into the ground, though.

I was perfectly happy riding my Mary stock until I started caring about going faster.

had my Mary for a while now. easily 1000+ trail miles. only "major" mechanicals issues to speak of: stripped crank arm, needed new rear hub and busted seat post.

but considering the mileage and my size (200lb+) I think the Mary has held up VERY well. e.g., I have NO problems with the wheels (though I understand they are heavy).

oh, I've replaced the brakes since the stock ones suck ass.

its certainly heavy for a rigid SS bike but thats what you get for the $$.

definately recommend the Mary. you'll be able to beat the crap out of it for a long time. I'll be riding mine until the frame breaks in half.

oh, and as Pearl said, it WILL replace your "primary" bike.

test ride all 3 of those the mary, kona and the redline monocog.
i really like the mary even though the whole 29'er SS thing is a fad.....
next year it will be unicycles. 🙂

Mike, 26" or 29" Unicycles? Which one would be better for me? Im 6' if that helps. Thanks, Mitch😀

Too much information to chew, but it seems EVERYONE is leaning towards the Mary.

Now do I follow the crowd? 😛

Who cares what everyone else has, I'd rather have the Kona and a Chipotle burrito than the Mary without a Chipotle burrito.

The Mary jokes are funny, but think of all the cool little jingles about riding "your unit".

Everyone wants to ride my Unit
My Unit is full of mud
I don't have a rack on my roof, so I stick my Unit in the trunk after I dismantle it
etc.
