29er Wheels?

Need 29er wheelset. What fits into the "Good," "Better," and "Best" categories? (Please don't bother mentioning the $2000 Bontrager carbon wheelset mentioned in this forum section elsewhere, that's WAY out of my budget.)

Guideline: "Best" category would be wheelsets in the $800 price point, such as the Mavic Crossmax.

What about "Good" and "Better"?

Are the Stanz really up to the hype that I've been reading?

If you're willing to spend the $800 retail for Crossmax, I think you'd be better served building a custom wheelset with XTR, DT Swiss, or King hubs. You'll be in the ballpark from a weight standpoint, they'll be as stiff, more durable, and more serviceable.

Also, my personal opinion of Mavic has changed over the past couple years for the worse. The latest, and quite possibly the straw that broke the camel's back is the current Mavic RSys road wheel debacle.

So would they fall under "Bester"? But then what about building up a pair of Edge carbon tubulars on Chris King hubs with Sapim cXray spokes? Would those be "bester'er"?

These are the wheels down from the ones I ride, the Bontrager RXL29's. They're only about 20 grams heavier than the carbon version and use the same hubs/spokes. I raced last year on these and they are light, durable, and fast...They're around $800...Numero uno advantage to these over CrossMax's, the spokes aren't gonna snap on you...I'm getting very good at replacing Mavic spokes...

stans arches for a more xc style or flows for a little rougher stuff laced to hope hubs. I have an arch laced to a hope pro II up front with a flow laced to hope xc in the back. should be around ~800

Why even bother with 29's? They dont turn as fast, they're heavier and they break. Bike Mag already did a breakdown on 29's and 26's came out on top. Only think 29's claim to fame is they smooth out small bumps. Stupid. If your gonna drop coin on a 29'r in my opinion you'd be better off just getting a Ti bike with 26'rs.

with all the rain you're right, too many magazines. 29's are totally overrated as is the 24 hrs of allamuchy and other 24 hr races.
