4 X 44 + 4

Okay, I am not a strava or app guy, but a friend of mine and I are looking to do this route on Saturday, anyone else want in? Especially someone who can help with the guidance, we are coming from down south and will be riding fatties. Not looking for speed, but for fun. Thinking 8 or 9 am to sundown?

Alas, I have a family event on Saturday. But route is easy enough to follow if you follow the points in post #38. Only things I'll add are:

1) when you are approaching Newton, you have two choices:

a) Follow the "<-- Trail" sign on your left, which puts you on the road for short section. Follow that road about 3/4 mile until just before the "T" junction and you'll see another "<-- Trail" sign pointing you back to the resumption of the trail.

b) Ignore the "<--Trail" sign and keep going straight (curves to right) and you'll be in a low-lying area where an old bridge was washed away years ago. There may be a plank you can walk (or ride if you're Jeff Lenosky or Jim V 😀). This is the original rail bed that used to lead to Newton Station. Takes a bit of navigating to find the resumption of the trail outside Newton.

For this reason, I suggest Option a.

2) To get back on the Lackawanna from the Sussex Branch near the end of the ride, cross under the Lackawanna and immediately look to your right. You'll see a short steep singletrack leading up to the track bed. Take that and bang a right on the Cutoff. You'll be back at the Tunnel within 1.5 miles.

Still sorting out F.A.T. and S.A.T. plans...may be out on Long Island those days. But if so I'll post up a series of dates for a re-dux.

Thx for this. Since a bunch of folks want to ride this route, I tried to convert my gdb file to gpx so I could send it to anyone who wants it, but the converter claimed my file didn't have any valid GPS data 😕 Tried the site's other suggestions, to no avail.

If anyone wants to give it a try themselves, PM me your email address and I'll send you the .gdb file. I filled in the missing 4 miles manually with the Garmin track tool, so you'll have the full route.

Update: at this point I will be out on L.I. on the Friday and Saturday after T-giving, so won't be able to lead another installment then. If anyone plans to give it a go and needs a gpx file, let me know. AndyJ kindly converted my gdb for me, I'm happy to send it along to those who'd like it.

Can you send me the GPX link? I think I can add your loop into some stuff I already know and make something nice and long 😀

-Jim.

Why not just post it here, I would like to take a look.

Sorry for delay, was away for a week in Europe. Didn't realize I could upload files. Just tried it. File size (450K) is supposedly too large? Any tips appreciated.

trail is in unridable condition currently...17000 invasive burshes (spelling intentional) all droopy with the snow made for the most frustrating hour spent on a bicycle this afternoon

Would love to see a gps track of this ride. Plus as mentioned the file you attached JimV isn't a valid gpx. A ride of that length is more my mojo.

Tried attaching it earlier (see post 67)...can't attach to this thread as it's too big. PM'd you.
