6 Mile Run Conditions

Hey there.
I have never been to 6 mile and was hoping to maybe go on Saturday.
Any locals around that can give some advise? maybe not a good idea with all this rain?
Thanks!

The feedback i'll give you is that if you think that it MIGHT be wet.. it is!

This area was once slated to be a reservoir . Basically it's low lying with a clay based soil. That clay dried like cement. If you rut it up, we are riding hard ruts all summer.

The park superintendent isn't pleased with the amount of use the park sees while wet.

Do you part by staying away after a rain or a thaw.

Even more important is to spread the word that is NOT cool at all to ride when wet.

Our impact as a group is powerful. In NJ we don't live in isolation and our actions are felt, even if not immediately.

@Jairo S.

This park is 100% red clay and is one of the least water friendly trails around. It'll take several days of no rain, low humidity, warm temps, bright sunshine and a fair amount of wind to make it rideable.

I could give you the whole "trail damage" Speach... but honestly, unless you enjoy destroying your drivetrain and sliding every hard pedal stroke...you're gonna be miserable.

I live w/in riding distance of SixMile and there's no way I'm going any time soon.

Just my 2c.

Maybe we should get a group together to hang out in the parking lots and hand out JORBA cards and explain proper trail care to everyone?
whats @pooriggy doing this weekend?
I will bring some cookies
Sounds like an idea, a sign to close the trails is too much but people In the parking lot to preach and harass will go over well.

Thanks for your advise.
I did not know the type of terrain and that is why I asked for advise from the locals/ experts. I respect the work that others put into their trails and I am well aware of how our actions impact our relations with park officials, hikers.
Runners etc.
I'll spread the word.

From what I remember reading a few years ago about the history of the park, it still is slated to be a reservoir - sometime around 2040.

I live half a mile from six mile. Park is slammed. To put it in perspective, the Blackwell's Mills causeway (adjacent to the park) was closed yesterday due to flooding.

That spot is a good drive-by indicator of six mile conditions - if the lots at the D&R day use area on Blackwells Mills have puddles, 6 mile will be too wet to ride.

12 years of riding the park taught me that. Back in the "wood pallets near the concrete bridge" days

See, this is the kind of thoughtful education I love to see. Baby steps, but we can get this level of education to everyone and the park will benefit.

Dang......I was just looking back at my Strava from last year and my first ride of the year was on April 24th. 🙁
