700c roadie prick tubeless...any luck?

I have been doing 1 or 2 road rides a week and twice in the past three months I have gotten flats at the furthest point on sandy hook and once local. This ends up being about one in every 8 rides or so. I have heard mixed reviews so i wanna see if anyone has had luck going tubeless on the road? If so what did you do for your success? Brand of tubeless liquid, inserts, etc? My domane 4.5 is "tubeless ready" but I still need to buy the goods. Also, what are some good reolling tires? My factory tires have tons of chunks/slices in them with only about 1000 or so miles o them.

@capedoc

Riding at Sandy Hook would seem to be a great place to go tubeless with all the crushed shells on the road. This is probably why your tires are sliced to shreds. I gave similar problems when I take the road bike to the east end of Long Island. I am not tubeless on the road but I know Capers is... Hopefully he chimes in. Regarding liquid - Stans is my personal preference for the mtb and cx bike.

Have you checked Bontrager for tires?

I'm rolling schwalbe ones and so far they've been good. Three times the rear tire developed a hole but was able to seal. The lower pressure makes for a smother ride as well. Maybe @jdog will chime in as he rolls these as well.

I'm partial nut job I guess as my Domane frame rides so smoooth I am running 140psi with tubes right now. Would love to try tubeless if not a complete pain.

There's a good thread somewhere here.

Road tubeless is just as easy at MTB tubeless. I rode tubeless on the road for 3 years and never got a flat. Not sure why I switched back come to think of it.

Reason I am asking is that Pat from Trek middletown said they never mastered it and had lots of problems. Wondering who has had success and what was the recipe. Thanks guys.

I've had very good success with Hutchinson Sector 28s on Dura-Ace C24 wheels and Stans sealant. I ran them at 80-85 psi and it was stable and smooth over chip-seal and gravel.

Zero burping problems. The Hutchinson tires have a carbon bead that creates a very snug fit on the Shimano wheels. It is virtually impossible for the bead to lift away from the rim without completely deflating the tire and pushing the bead into the center channel. Note the bead lock ridges in this photo.

Hed C2s, Velocity A23s, H Plus Son's - have run em all ghetto tubeless. Never had a problem. I weigh 205 and run em at 90-100 psi. Worst case scenario? Put a tube in em. I've done that once in three years. Currently using the Hutchinson Secteurs.
(You MIGHT wanna think about using a different sealant. One of my C2 rims rotted at the valve hole after 3 years. So, ok, it's not a perfect system.)

When i built my road bike in March, I scored a set of Shimano C24 wheels with Hutchinson Fusion 3's setup tubeless. 1500+ miles in, so far so good - no flats... Knock on wood.

I've been running road tubeless since 2010. Initial set up was on Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels with Hutchinson Fusion (2 or 3, whatever was the newest in 2010) with Stan's sealant.

Since then, I've put on between 5,000 and 5,500 miles on the system. I run them at 90psi front, and 95psi rear. I'm thinking that the tires lasted about 1,500 to 2,000 miles each, depending on road conditions. In that time, only 0ne flat. That was this past summer at the Revolutionary Ramble. Hit a pothole hard enough to slice the rear tire and dent the rim to the point that it needed to be replaced (Upgrade!!! 🙂) New wheels are the Mavic Ksyrium SLS with the Specialized Roubaix Road Tubeless 23/25mm tires, and Stan's sealant. The front tire currently has about 1,300 miles on it and ZERO signs of wear.

When riding the stock wheelset with tube/clinchers (Conti 4000s) I run 105/110psi front/back. 140psi is insanely high.

Also run tubeless for CX, but that's for another thread......
