Any reports on central/northern NJ trails?

I'm hoping I can get in a dawn patrol ride on "dirt" tomorrow before the big thaw. Has anyone attempted CR, Six Mile, or any of the Allaumchy parks?

I think I'm gonna try get out there from 6-8am before I have to go to my meeting. The question is do I have to go all the way to the Mooch? Perhaps Mahlon or LM will be ok :hmmm:

That vid is what my backyard rides like too.....BUT, I learned this morning when I went for a ride at Loantaka Park (literally a half mile away), that what's good in my yard doesn't make for a real-world experience on the trails. The trodden-on sections in Loantake were firm and rideable (tho freakin' choppy), but the untracked snow on the sides of the trails wasn't packed hard enough..the ice layer was too thin, and I broke through any time i tried to ride it. And this was at 6:15 this morning (Friday), with air temp of about 18 degrees!!!

So, as someone once said..."Actual results may vary"

Well I'm hoping for stellar conditions tomorrow.... this vid was from a little after 10am, so not that early. hopefully whats in my yard reflects whats 25 seconds down my street 😀
no studs either. getting good traction at the speed Im comfortable riding at on this stuff.

I think my plan is check out DP/SSP. If that's a no go, or if I sleep too late I'll hit Loantaka and Patriot's Path on my way back.

JohneeOxford let us know what's goin on out there as soon as you can 😀

Buddy of mine went hiking into Allamuchy (517/Tranquility side) yesterday to scope the trail/snow conditions. He broke through any time he veered off the walked-on portions... As Leslie Neilsen once said: "Good luck, we're all counting on you"

I think the trick is well, for me anyway is to keep moving! when I stop and put my foot down it will start to break through. when Im rolling I dont think Im in one spot long enough for it to break through.
this is probably one of those things where all the planets are aligned or some weird cosmic occurrence

Based on the reports, I think I'm gonna skip on my plans for the Mooch. JohnnyOxford, that makes sense that you wouldn't break through if you keep on moving, but it's gotta be a bitch if not impossible to get started again if you have to step off at some point.

Just came back from Mahlon and its dangerous. I could ride off trail but there are spots you break through and stop violently and try to step down and break thru a foot. Someone is bound to break a wrist or ankle. Riding in trail is just as dangerous because if you get too close to the edge you breakthru.

Gotta go slow bro.... yeah you'll break through that stuff... you gotta feel it out. I don't even think you can classify it as actual mountain biking. As long as you are aware that you will be going over the bars at any given moment you should be ok. Now I'm going way into this.... just ride it.. if it doesn't work
go home and enjoy a beer for your effort! 😀
