Ask an automobile mechanic.

So we had to have my wife’s VW Atlas checked for a few things at the dealer and had an oil change while it was there.

Anyone want to guess what the dealer charges for an oil change. Nothing else was done, just an oil change. Synthetic oil. 6 cylinder.

I'll play. $240.

Mrs had a Jetta for previous car. I attempted to change the oil once and then I was like F this. Going to the dealer. It was reasonable cost though. I always look out for the promos they have on the dealer sites, coupons or what not.

OTOH - do you think heating an uninsulated garage will preserve seals in your car for longer. I mean thats long term if it's a garage queen mostly.

Either way Ive been running a heater at low in the garage just to keep it above bearable temps when I need to jump in there.

no, not in NJ temperatures, if you liked in alaska or something then maybe it would ease some of the stress on the seals when starting the engine, but so does a block heater.

I dont think its so much the temps as it would be the lack of use....and thus seals drying out. Thats a very general statement as it totally depends on what the seal is...what it is that is being sealed....what sort of pressure is involved in the seal, etc...

Good guess. Nailed it. 239.

Is that insane or am I naive? My jeep grand Cherokee was $85 at the dealer and they rotated the tires.
Just saw this....JFC!

$85 is not bad....my wife's big block out back uses almost 8 qts of synthetic, so with a filter its usually $50 + for me to do it myself....which I mainly do bc I know the mechanics who they assign to do this work....and I have heard the stories....i'd rather just do it myself lol.

It’s insane right? Like, it’s not a Porsche. It’s a VW SUV.

It’s been a good car so far and it’s about paid off. I think we’ll probably trade it in for something more reasonable.

Subaru forums are full of stories where jiffy lube, valvoline, etc. have drained the CVT instead of the oil. I have not worked on a 3.6 Outback, but the 2.5 engine oil pan is a bit tucked in and hidden by the plastic shroud. However the CVT pan is right in your face. Even though it looks 100% like a trans pan and not engine oil.

You mean more reliable?
My GTI never failed me. 145k miles and never left me stranded or even had any thing other than a clutch needed. And it was flashed with about 1k miles. My wife’s atlas has been just as reliable so far. Only routine maintenance needed. Only 60k miles, so smaller sample but I can’t complain.

$5k to rebuild the trans in my Wife's Acadia with 135k. Had 2-3 gear delay which was common and was told to run it until it got worse. Then started to get a chatter around Christmas all the way through 5th gear. Didn't want to wait to get it fixed to leave her stranded. Went rebuild option to get all the upgrades (bigger converter/shift kit). Runs like it should now. Bob at Central Converter in North Brunswick came highly recommended. Guess this model transmission is fairly common in his shop as he says he does 5 or so a month.

Bob's my next door neighbor. I guess I got a good deal when he rebuilt my Suburban transmission in exchange for a Schwinn Tandem restoration for his flea market find. It's not tough having a neighbor that always refuses to accept payment.

Friend of mine owns a transmission shop in town, and that's how it seems to go. Yeah he sees the random things that could go wrong in a transmission, but way more of the Brand X, Model Y, Years 20XX to 20YY had some deficiency. Relatively easy to diagnose and often there's a fix to the original underlying issue.
