Belgian beer shootout thread

This Verboten is good. My bottle of La Chouffe is warm so that may have to wait until tomorrow after breakfast.

What are you like 65?

PS...i was more of a malt liquor guy in high school.

i dunno man. i can't be held responsible for anything i said last night. i culled my drinking significantly and last night put down 5 1/8 Racer 5's before my mind cut out. apparently i was texting my boss too. sweet.

did you use the "c" word?

my vote goes for La Chouffe

for someone who enjoys good beer I am grossly lacking in the "lingo", so I'll just say....La Chouffe tasted more yummy.

Stopped by the store yesterday to pick up some of these. Of course they were out of La Chouffe. They said they get new shipments in Tuesdays so ill check again after work. This is going to be an expensive competition...

If anybody is going shopping, tripels next week.
And yes, these are expensive. But if you don't want to drink the whole bottle, you can put a wine bottle stopper in to save it. It will stay good for a day or two without going flat...

Beer here!

Not sure if anyone up north here is playing along and hasn't stocked up,
but I grabbed a six each of the Verboten and the Tripel Horse.

I'm happy to offer up a mixed six of the two if someone is interested-
we'll call it $11.

Yeah finding Tripel horse or verboten as singles is tough.

Had la Chouffe tonight. Thought it was really good, def had a that strong Belgian yeast profile. And the coriander added a nice flavor.

Here's my little review of the two.

Disclaimer:
I realize these two beers are not really the same style. The Verboten is a Belgian style pale ale, and the La Chouffe is a Belgian Strong Ale. But I felt like they have enough qualities in common that they worked well in this format.

The Verboten:
Its a nice dark amber ale. The head reduces to a thin foam layer... somewhat of a letdown to me. When I smell it I get bananas/floral.
But the taste is awesome. Its a great Belgian spicy flavor with a good carbonation. There was no lacing on the glass. I paid 10 Bucks for a 6 pack.

The La Chouffe:
First, you need to let it warm up a bit. (I think the bottle says between 45-50 degrees). This is pretty important, when its too cold, you really don't get all the flavors. It pours to a lighter ale color with a bit of haze. You really need to be careful when pouring this beer or it will foam over. The creamy head stuck around a lot longer. The taste is refreshing with hints of fruit, spice (cloves), pepper, and a little floral. None are over powering at all. And together they do a dangerous job of covering up the 8% ABV. I paid 11 bucks for a bomber (2 pints worth).

The Winner:
I give the nod to La Chouffe. Its one of my favorite beers And although the Verboten is one of the better American made Belgian ales I've had... I just felt like the La Chouffe had more character, complexity, and just a better taste. (This is totally subjective. )

If you liked these beers, you should definitely seek out Green Flash Brewery's Rayon Vert. Especially if you liked the spiciness.
Another classic (maybe an all time classic) Belgian to try is Duvel. Make sure you give it a little shake before pouring it into a glass to mix up the spices.

Verboten v La Chouffe

I tried these tonight, as you are supposed to taste Belgian beers:
with Chinese food.

I know they aren't identical styles, but I thought they were pretty well matched in taste profile. Only major difference was the hoppiness of the Verboten came through more strongly. Not in a bad way, but it's what really differentiated the 2 for me.
Both were very good, but I'll give my vote for La Chouffe.

I'll note my wife is psyched for this beertest.
She has played along with the others, but she loves Belgian beers.
In a blind pour she picked the Verboten as the American before trying the La Chouffe.

I have tried a bunch of the American versions of the Belgian Triple - mostly to save money.

The Weyerbacher Merry Monks is my favorite so far. It is spot on, and delicious!
