Berms and Jumps and Flow

on another note, I never knew there was such hate between street vs trail

If there was a local set, I would never give that up.

Trail FTW!

Trails take work, a ton of work, street doesn't. Anyone can ride out there front door and do manuals down the street. Almost everybody rides street but not everybody rides trails, not hate so much, just the way it is.

i never understood the brakeless thing either. It is definitely a fad in my opinion (just like mens skinny jeans) and I think it's just about saying you are ballsy and also i think they use the "skateboards dont have brakes" excuse. The pros are good enough where they can ride brakeless but then the stupid kids immitate them and that's dangerous. No helmets for BMX i also dont understand but that's a whole nother argument.

Yeah, when you have guys like Chase Hawk who was riding 9th Street when he was 9 riding brakeless, it's a LOT different than the 14 year old kid buying a complete from Dan's that doesn't have 990 mounts.

No helmet thing I agree with too - although I posted 2 pics with helmetless riders. If it's any help they were like the only 2 at the trails that day. I always think of what happened to Aitken and it makes the decision easy.

True. Definitely not hate. I actually love watching street vids - it's just too burly for me and I'd feel like I was creepin' riding a big bike through a campus or town. Although I'll rip manuals down the street and bunny 180s in the driveway.

Just the way it is now - and I might also say it's the day and age and kid's mindset today. I really feel like trails might be a lost art/discipline in a decade or so. All the trail guys I know are older - I haven't seen "new blood" at the spots in many years.

Oh. Kinda like road riding. I get it now 😉

Well, yea, I know that but what pawoods wrote seemed more like hate

I took it more as fustration and disappointment. I mean think about it: Catty is a f'in legal spot with a ton of insane lines that work amazingly, in a great spot in the woods with the best dirt. I would think there would be kids camping there and shoveling shit to be able to be a local but like he said " there is the smallest crew yet"

And his post touched on many things I totally agree with and riding for so long have seen it happened here in our part of NJ too. Back in the 90's we had a few trail jams and heads from all over would pop in. I used to say back then that DJ trails were the place where you would find everyone: Racers with their aluminum frames and v-brakes; street rats with snotty bikes with pegs and skinny bars; park riders with pegs and rotors; and throw in a couple of big wheel kooks like me. It was cool - so many different styles then.

I really could go on and on - I might send PA Woods an email as his posts touched a nerve that has been flaired up for a while. If I do, I'll post here - seems like some of you guys might want to read it.

Thanks for posting don, good stuff as usual. That hip is craziness.

A combination of factors has kept me from the trails for the most part but a squabble between some of the riders may see the place fall apart. Your stuff looks good.

Trail drama? Like we were saying about street, it can be tough when you get different views on how things should go.

Forgot to say - anytime you want to ride let me know - stuff is firing and we should have a new line running in a month or so.

some thoughts...

Sometimes I will ride and intend on NOT using my brakes. Its just a "coaching" thing someone suggested a long time ago. Teaches you to ride in your limits but also to challenge yourself. And its fun. But I would NEVER NEVER NEVER take the brakes off the bike. That is just asinine.

I will NEVER NEVER NEVER understand ANYONE riding without a helmet.

I will NEVER NEVER (only 2 nevers here) understand why there is such animosity between cycling types road/mountain/downhill/crosscountry. That is so lame. We are all CYCLISTS.

But I also dont understand why people judge someone without first getting to know them. Believe me, as a female, I hear all the time of the whispered behind my back "oh look at HER." "look at that outfit" "I am staying far away from her" and such. So why do roadies look down their noses at mountain bikers. Why do cross country riders think downhillers are not real bikers. I do it all. Road, cross country, downhill, even bmx'ed a bit.

Dont get it.

No helmets
no brakes
no love

stupid.

I can see how trails is fading, but could it also be a regional thing? If you think of the amount of development in NJ an eastern PA that's happened since the 80s, a lot of space has disappeared.

My friends and I had a small spot right on my street as a kid. Hell, I remember my friends little brother would even ride on his mustache handle bar banana seat monster and still have fun just rolling over stuff. Anyway, we had a small spot in the woods right across the street from a friends house behind some neglected private tennis courts. Now that spot is a mc mansion.

If you think of how much little available land there is now compared to then, there's a fraction of the space, legal (or not haha!).

Add in the advent of the Xbox and gaming and now kids are more into sitting inside versus getting out. That's a whole other discussion.

But I will say, when I take my kids to the local park here in town, the skatepark is always packed with skaters and bikes. That is promising. If we get in more pump tracks in local spots that are legal and open to all like Alexandria and what is starting up in west Milford, skatepark kids will probably start picking up shovels if they have the time between soccer, hockey, baseball and trying to be the next valedictorian of their elementary school.

Nice - ride it all is not a bad motto. I try to do it myself but find myself at the DJ trails more often than not - for me it's where it's at - but I do enjoy a good XC trail ride and if I had time I'd hit up Mtn Creek.

I remember reading an interview with the snowboarder Kevin Jones this past season in one of the snowboard mags. I forgot the question but his answer was you can't talk shit on another discipline if you haven't done it yourself. Like you can't say riding street stinks if you haven't done it and the same for riding backcountry pow lines. I couldn't find the interview but he touches on a little bit of it in his TB20 section where guys used to ride it all: http://www.snowboardermag.com/videos/standard-films-tb20-kevin-jones-full-part/

Very similair to what is going on with bikes or at least with BMX. Guys like Brian Foster and Neal Wood could race on Sunday, ride trails during the day and hit the park or ride street at night during the week. And it was even more so the generation before them.

So true and I totally agree.

Yup, there is some hope. I had time to take a quick tour of Hartshorne last week and came upon a pack of local kids hanging out at one of the sections where there is a natural drop-in - cross the road - fly out jump. Next thing I know my seat is slammed and I am taking a few runs with them. One kid had a little kiddie shovel so I showed them how to take out a bump in the lip and a few quick tips/tricks. The detour cut my ride time down but I had a smile and I hope those kids did too.

It is weird how kids are so specific these days, last year at the trails, every crew of kids would have at least one dude that wouldn't be riding at all. I would ask what's up and they would say, oh, he just rides street. In the hay day of pa trails that was referred to in that blog post was when I was hanging in that area, sure luc-e and butcher were street guys, but they would still ride posh and the other local stuff.

Just watched the first few vids. Awesome trails! Some serious work with the design and flow.

Keep up this thread. I don't normally post, but like watching the videos. Its a one stop shop and saves me the time of searching the internet.
