Biking New Years resolutions

Thinking a couple of triathlons for this year - will mix it up, on and off road. Best learn how to swim first.

I signed up for the New Jersey triathlon (sprint-July 20th) with a couple guys from work. And another one more local to me, just to get one under my belt beforehand to try and gain some advantage over the other guys (none of us have done one yet).

I also need to learn to swim, lol.

Apparently this year is shaping up to be one where I do events I've always thought of doing but never have (marathon, triathlons, maybe something else as well...).

I forgot you have baby in the house. How you planning to exercise twice a day? I was did that with my first one and it was totally unnecessary. Though swim minimum twice a week if that segment scares you. It's more about building confidence than time. Also consider a wetsuit, if you go that route will help with buoyancy.

The baby is killing me, lol. I haven't been able to get out on the bike since he was born. I'm stuck running or getting on the trainer either after the older one is asleep, or before he wakes up, so that my wife doesn't have to deal with both at once while I'm gone. It's tough because the two year old is trying to get as much attention as the newborn lately, lots of crying and acting out. The last two days haven't been terrible, hopefully he's getting over it.

There's a gym with a pool about 3 miles away, I just have to get there and join. They have hours early in the morning and late at night so I should be able to sneak out while the little ones are sleeping. I took a swimming class in college so I'm not too worried about the water, just need to get somewhere decent at it.

Once the newborn starts sleeping more than 2 or 3 hours at a time during the night, I should be able to get in a 430am and 8pm workout in. Right now I'm too tired for morning workouts. Night time is tough too, but easier than trying to get out of bed.

I have no idea what to wear for a tri, lol. There's a place called Aistriu (translates to: transition) near me. I'm assuming they should know a thing or two about triathlons so I'll probably check them out for advice and gear.

On a second thought, I changed my goal for 2019...this!

my resolution: get less fat and get back in shape so that I can do some of the longer rides that I've done: Hell of Hunterdon, Gravel Grape Crusher (https://www.bikereg.com/ggc), Farmers Daughter (https://www.bikereg.com/farmersdaughter). I am so out of shape at this point I would be happy just to get in good enough shape to finish these rides. But hopefully I'll get my ass in gear so that I post a better time (or pace) than previous years...that's always the goal

I also want to do the "unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley" ride (https://www.unpavedpennsylvania.com/) - the 90 mile route. the inaugural one was this year but I just wasnt in shape to do it so I never signed up. If I can get myself in shape and finish I would be very happy. It looks quite epic, scenic and challenging.

Thanks for being so detailed and including the links! Saves me some investigating 🙂
