Clean Start

So what did you do to get it running? Sounds smooth.

I bet you can diagnose it.

It's a 4cyl.
Did a tune-up, o+f, plugs, cap, rotor, wires. Then Fuel pump and carb.

On cranking, it made a little starting noise, but backfired out the exhaust and carb.

what happened? Why was it hard to diagnose? Why did i realize what i did when i woke up in the middle of the night after removing the head?
(i'm not sure i did it, might have been my 17yo help)

Bet @UtahJoe gets it.

Timing off?

Back firing through the carb also makes me wonder if you had the starter wired backwards.

Awesome work Gilligan!

i didn't move the distributor. but maybe you are in the right universe, cause obviously boom with a valve open.

funny, we had a repair come back from greenwood lk marina about 40 years ago, and the starter spun backwards.
I can't see how this is possible, even so, since it spun backwards, the gear wouldn't spin out towards the flywheel.

Thanks!

Tell me that when you did the cap and rotor, you held them side by side (verifying the polarity as in where the notch is) and then swapped the wires one at a time, noting which cylinder they went to as well?

polarity is good - molex plug.

well i thought i had the wires right. now what made it so hard to diagnose?

Always take a picture of the before wiring and wire placement. Assuming it was right always makes it harder! And we both know the firing order is never 1,2,3,4!!

it might have helped. maybe not. I had the firing order "right", and the #1 cyl correctly placed.
getting warmer. quotes are a clue.

also, didn't have to look far...

Geez, it is a mess back there. i did clean it out a bit.

How is that even possible??

Cause i'm an idiot. assuming i did the wires, cause i can't remember.
if the engine direction is left as marked on the flame arrestor, the distributor direction is right (clockwise)
I checked the wires 10x, and they were in order, but i had the direction of rotation wrong.
in a 4cyl, that means two were right, and two were wrong. so it could make starting noises, and
backfire at the same time. one blowing out the exhaust, the other the intake.

i know i marked cyl #1. and i knew it was right.
I basically woke up sweating, and knowing exactly what was going on. already had the head off,
i pulled the dist cap, and jumped the starter. yup.
So $100 and 8 hours or so, cause duh.

The last time i did this was 40 yrs ago with my firebird. I started it at 2am with open headers after futzing with it for 4 hours.
my parents were not pleased. That was more complicated because i replaced the '69 distributor with something more modern,
and also did a cam. so 100x the possibilities.

Will be moving this to the floating things area now.

My Nephew came over with the power washer and made an initial pass over the interior,
and most of the vinyl - which is now sitting in my driveway.

this boat project may have jumped the shark and needs its own thread aka the queen wants a new convertible

That picture is a blur, on a second thought that maybe because of my cataract...You had me curious but now I am upset because I can't understand what you're talking about.

Can you upgrade the damn thing to an ECU so I can get a clue?

How's the cough?

the pic was just to check that i had a pic - a real pic would have been a straight on one.

upgrade - that will be a full boat upgrade. a few years off. Hopefully something i can sleep on when i get booted for buying a boat.

i'm at 95% - every so often i get a ball of snot, or my throat gets irritated for a couple minutes. Then i'm good.
Thanks...
