Commuting

How do you guys secure nice bikes in NYC outside when no bike room exists at work? Or is that just dumb to try?
For starters, don't have a nice bike.
Anything worth a grand or more will get clipped, it's safe to assume.

Lock it to a legit bike rack (if available),
that way it won't disappear courtesy of the DOT, building manager or a construction crew.

Tie down everything, and use bolt on stuff when possible. If it's got a quick release, expect it to not be there when you get back.

Por ejemplo:

The bike on the left is a survivor.
It's been locked up in this area for at least 3 years. (Bike on the right is @C8N's)

1- it is on the sidewalk side of the rack, not going to be crushed by someone parking
2-legit bike rack, not going to be cut loose because it wasn't where it didn't belong
3- multiple locks = pain in the ass to bike thieves- u-lock catches rear wheel and frame, cable lock wrapped tightly around frame secures front wheel.
This is all a pain to bike thieves.

Do like that. In front of a 24h store if you can.

@C8N may have more to say, but this is a good start.

Stickers from @jmanic ! Lots of them!

Joking aside, I don't think you want to lock up anything of value in NYC. I recently read that bike theft has been steadily rising and thieves are carrying around power tools to cut locks. No matter what locks you use, its just not going to be secure enough. More disturbing is that some thefts happen in broad day light when ppl are around. Ppl might give nasty looks but at the end of the day, most dont give a rats ass as long as it's not theirs.

My advice would be... don't do it.
If anything, get a beater that no one wants. My bike has so far survived 3 months at around PABT and I call her POSS (it's a Ross from the 80s I think)... Piece of Steel Shit. I bought it for $20 on CL and threw some parts on it to make it rideable.

Will also add that your bike will get scratched up from rubbing against the rack.

My building uses loopholes to get around the law. Freight elevator is only open during business hours. I work until 9pm... so I wouldn't be able to get the bike out... :-(

Allegedly a bike room is being built. I'm hoping its big enough and has enough room since I get in late... do other offices with bike rooms have trouble with room for the bikes? I am wondering how many people will use it... not even sure when it will be done...

My comp has a bike room but you gotta take it out by 5 or 6pm. I leave the office at 430 but I still don't use the bike room since there are bike racks right in front and it's next to a court with plenty of cops around. Not to mention, don't want to deal with the freight elevators.

FYI my fellow Citibikers-
Watch those red lights.
Co-worker got clipped this morning for blowing a red on 1st and 23rd-
$190 ticket.
Yowch!

I wish I could ride to work. The office here in Blue Bell, PA even has showers. But even by my rather risky standards, any route from my house to the office would eventually end up in death. Oddly enough, the route from my house to the Somerset NJ office would have been safer. Just incredibly long (50+ miles each way).

I am starting to think that they just pick a day to ticket cyclists.

I'm not in a rush to go to or from work anymore. 🙂

No stress. New approach going forward.
Going to work... no rush but going back... gotta catch the bus!

Damn... I need to finish the work on my commuter and get her out to the city

Yeah, I've witnessed people getting tickets for running the red light on the corner of 31st and 8th, at the penn station citibike valet station. Keep an eye out for cop cars sitting in the bike/citibike lane.
