Cross Country Skiing

I was at Wayway on Sunday also. Skied the lake to little bear, wingdam then sitting bear before heading back to the lake. The snow really packs up on the eastern side, there was no gliding until I got out of the crusty 2' drifts. Took pumphouse out to livingston extention and back to car. Had to keep it short to get over to a Daytona roundy round party. When I left the house this morning we had bout 4" of new stuff on the ground and it was still falling.

First time out this morning at SoMo Res. What a great morning, hit some doubletrak to start up the mountain and found some singletrack to test my skills(or lack of them). Seemed to be sticky this AM and there was no gliding to be had but kinda got the hang of it. About 1.5 hrs of sweaty fun. Only bummer was to douchbag cops gave me a parking ticket for having a commercial vehicle. For f sake, its a work van, and the sheriff I bitched to told me I shouldnt even be driving on the road to the park, Theyre crackin down! Anyway, good first effort and the top of my toes are killin me

Randolph trails are in generally good shape but the constant westerly wind is playing havoc with some areas. The hills at Mt Freedom park were mostly scoured clean a day after the storm. Luckily the trails are much better protected, even the pipeline which is in great shape.

If your sticking on wet snow using waxless skiis Swix makes a wax called ez-glide you coat the whole ski with works great. Rubbing candle wax on the bottom of your skiis will also work in a pinch but can ruin your kick if you put too much on the scales.

Seriously, a parking ticket for a work van? I keep getting the feeling that Essex County will do everything they can to keep people from enjoying the parks!

Thanx, I'll try that. Same was happening today if I went to slow

Pedals and I got out for a 2 1/2hr day at deer park with primo conditions. Tracks are hard and fast to keep a good rhythm. Overall good workout...

Deer park does look good, did you go out earlier in the day before the snow got softer?

Wednesday
Spent 1.5 hr. at Clayon on the skis. The trails where well packed for about 65% of the runs, I layed down some tracks to provide wall to wall tracks on the trails. Clayton has good conditions but it will be better earlier in the day before the snow gets too soft.
There is still a lot of snow in Monmouth co., even with 40 degree days it will take about another 5-7 days to melt the snow... assuming we dont get more snow.
Thursday
Went over to local golf course for 1 hr. This sucked...no tracks and 6-8" of wet heavy snow with no base to it. Oh well, it beats putting the bike on a trainer in the basement.

Got out after work for 1.5hrs at the Reservation. Borrowed my buddies wide BC skis and they were a beast to manuever, I'm sticking with the rentals for the rest of the week.

We got out about 11 am conditions were perfect. Also waxed the skis up which made gliding much easier then the other day. I'd go Friday but made a commitment to ride the road with Keith....

This is a straight up abuse of power. Asshats with badges.

ok, i want to take the plunge and take up xc skiing exactly for conditions like this...snow on the ground that won't leave. any suggestions as far as equipment starting out? renting? take a class? i got no clue on how to ski but have been snowboarding for years. it seems fairly easy to get into.

sorry, i should have went back to the first page before i posted. seems like a wealth of info has already been shared. cool.

I went to High Point on Sunday and now I'm hooked. If anyone hasn't tried XC skiing yet, give it a try before the snow melts!!!

Hellz yeah!! I can't stress enough how much mtbr's will love it if they'd just give it a whirl. Glad ya liked it...............

I started 2 seasons ago and its the best thing EVER!! Easily get 3 months a season and i ski everything i bike. Get metal edged skis. Dont have to be a full wrap but at least some edge. I got fully hooked up at Dover Sport Shop for under $200. When your ready let me know...........

I've gotta head out to Dover or something. There's a nature center in my backyard which would be perfect.

Seems to be the only choice lately which isn't a bad thing. Far more fun then spinning away ridiculously on rollers or trainer in the dank dark basement...🙂

Anyone looking to get into xc skiing, Pelican in Morris Plains has some great deals on boots. I got Merrells yesterday for under 100$. They dont have much metal edged skiis but a good selection of Alpinas. Dover Sport is running 10% offf their packages. They have the Rossi's bc65's in 175 and 195. Whole pkg-under 350$. If you dont need metal edges pkgs are less than 200$. Ask for Frank
