D&L Fat Epic 200/400k February 11th, 2017

This is kind of a shitty post. Sorry.

Jim & Hilltop are doing something. You know, like 99.9% of the people out there don't do. They saw an opportunity to do something, to make something happen. Maybe it's not the perfect race. Maybe it won't cure cancer or lower the tax rate in NJ. But at least they're doing something. And for that, I applaud them & the effort they put in.

Thanks Jim for trying to make something happen. The effort is appreciated.

I agree. This whole thing is making me want to pull the trigger on getting a fat bike.

But now, if I don't, I'm going to get a bunch of folks together and swarm the Pine Barrens on this day. And we'll make a lot of noise and following inches form the wheel of any fat bike we see.

So either way, I have a plan for that weekend. 😀

I couldn't wait any longer, but Im assuming it looks something like this? Start at Stockton, South, then all the way back north to easton, then back to stockton?

Jim, Thanks for put the putting this together. I did a 100k fatbike in june. 8 1/2 hours in the saddle. Not sure I can do 200k but I'd like to try.

That sure looks like it. I'm going to pre-ride it and actually mark the turn-around points then do a legit GPS file for everyone. That will happen this weekend if anyone wants to tag along 😀

Anywho, thanks for the support. As in all racing endeavors, this is a stepping stone to something larger in the future. (If there's enough interest here to warrant something larger) There will be a lot of people that aren't into it, and that's ok, there's lots of races out there to choose from. This one just happens to be pretty darn close to home for a lot of us and about $150 cheaper than anything of equal distance so hopefully more people will focus on the positive aspects. Come out and have a good time with like-minded friends.

PS-We did add a 1/2 course 100k version for those that may not be up to tackling the full thing. It is more money as an incentive to do the longer one.

Here is one of the more open sections of the trail north of Frenchtown during a recent scouting mission.

S.J., our ride was a group ride, all for one-one for all. This ride looks like a go at your own pace." Pancake flat and hardpack "--That means no Big Hill, no Mt Devious, no Sandy Ridge, and most of all, no sand. Go for it!

Come and swarm any time. The chances of you seeing Andy, or any one else are slim to none. Or you could always come out and ride with us on a friendly ride. You don't need a fat bike this time of the year.

I was just giving him a hard time. I know how big it is out there - I rode at Wharton all winter this past year and had a great time. It's awesome to have a place like that not too far from home where it seems that no matter how bad conditions get elsewhere, it's almost always a viable option for a ride.

Jim's ride intrigues me, though. 200K is about 124 miles or so. On a more or less flat course like the D&L (but on a bike with fat tires) I'm really curious to know how fast one could do that ride. My curiosity alone may end up costing me some money here (although I just became aware of one possibility that may not be so bad.)

FYI: We do hold small events (group rides)on a regular bases and most of them have been posted here but very little interest has been shown for any of them. Right now the 7th annual Wharton 40 is scheduled for October 18 this is not necessarily a fat bike ride but it can be helpful in certain areas. Also we are the planning the route for the second running of the Pine Lands 100k which is a fat bike only ride. These are free unsupported rides with a lunch stop somewhere in the middle.

The fitness isn't there this go around, but this would be one heck of a carrot to dangle. Kudos to you Jim![/QUOTE]

Rats race, I ride
I do it to clear my mind and escape all the NJ rat racers and the trappings that go along with them

I got a lot of questions about the Epic today at Jungle. I pre-rode the lower section yesterday and will come up with the official course in the next couple weeks. Anyone interested in doing pre-rides let me know, next week I'll be doing the northernmost section.

Damn, this is getting more attention than I thought. Beast mode fat biker Robert May is registered as is Miss Yaeger. Some sponsors have also jumped on board. I really hope it snows.

Hello all! Jim I have a question for you. Were you able to post up that GPS file of the race course? I didn't see hence the question thanks.

I have not done this yet. I need to actually ride the whole thing beforehand to get an accurate course file. I have it all in parts though. Anyone want to pre-ride it with me? 😀

Epic near sold out!!!

This should be the phattest ride ever.

On another note, there were more phatties than regular mtb's that we saw Sunday morning @ Lewis Morris. Don't tell pinkbike😡

I don't own a fat bike, nor do I expect to any time soon, but this event sounds great.

Props to Jim and the Hilltop crew for doing something very cool.
