Disc Brakes - The NOW

I have 3 bikes I ride regularly. One with Hope Race X2s, one with XTs and one with SRAM guides.
I ride the bike with XTs the most. They have grown on me, but they are mostly on and off, and super powerful. The problem I had was I almost went otb a few times because of the combination of power and no modulation. With time I've gotten used to them and nowe and adjust accordingly.
The SRAMs have the same. If not more power (4 pistons yo) but feel sooooo much better. Modulation like a mofo. I really can't explain how blown away in an from these brakes. Every time I'm on that bike I wish I had them on all my bikes.
The Hopes aren't as powerful as either, but they do feel pretty awesome in their own way. They are machined aluminum, so bomb proof, and are completely rebuild able.....and most of all they're green and match my scalpel.

If you like modulation, Maguras work pretty well. The Louise brakes got me through Colorado and then some. I just had them bled for the first time in about 5 years. Shimano's XT is a solid brake system, but doesn't have the modulation of Magura. Excellent power from Shimano though.

2nd the Maguras. They have been bombroof OEM on my Cannondale FS...haven't had to futz with them since I got the bike 2.5 years ago. Great modulation, even for the lower end model (MT2) that they are. Pads still going strong, too.

For the record, my other bikes are all BB7-equipped and still going strong. I even have a pair of the originals from 2001, with 165mm rotors...swapped the pads a few times, otherwise still rockin'.

if you don't have the money for guides or XT's, SLX's are nice too. to be honest, i have a set of deore's and they're a phenomenal set of brakes for how cheap they are. I can't imagine a better performance-to-price ratio than deores. They're not as good as slx, xt, or guides, but they're a great set of brakes with good power and modulation for around $50 a brake. even bikeradar likes them.

SRAM guides RSC. I hve always been an avid fan because I don't rely on brakes to take the place of actually knowing how to brake and the guides are the next level. So smooth and so nice.

No one has said Shimano Alivios yet, so that's my pick.

For real, I'm a fan of XTs. Been on a set of the older style for 5 years and they've been almost maintenance free. Just recently the front needed a bleed but otherwise they've been great.

I rode maguras for years and while I liked them, my mechanic/husband made me switch, as they were a pain to maintain. They were in the shop way too much. Today I ride elixir and guides on all my bikes. No problems. Work well.

Is it wrong to dump my old set of juicies on to my kids bike to justify a new set of guides? they really suck, squeals and 100x worse mod than the SLX

Been on the guides for around a year. Couldn't be happier. 4oz penalty vs xx, but the power and control is like nothing I've ever experienced before. Go for the rs or rsc. The r's are good too, but the swinglink cam is what gives you that magic lever control.
