Drones overhead tonight (many)

So are these just planes that the military doesn't know about or just fake news?

“While the source and cause of these aircraft operating in our area remain unknown, we can confirm that they are not the result of any Picatinny Arsenal-related activities,” said Lt. Col. Craig A. Bonham II, Picatinny Arsenal Garrison Commander.
Picatinny Arsenal released a list Monday of the dates of 18 sightings, including the 11 confirmed incidents. “Confirmed” means a police officer or security guard “visibly witnessed a drone” while or after receiving the report, military officials said.

Picatinny Arsenal’s list also includes seven “unconfirmed” reports of drones, which means a police officer received a call but was “unable to verify the object upon arriving on the scene,” Army officials said. Two of the unconfirmed reports were listed as “aircraft.”

Bonham said Picatinny Arsenal officials immediately began investigating the initial reports, with several local, state, and federal partners.
Confirmed sightings occurred Nov. 13, Nov. 18, Nov. 19, and Nov. 24, when there were two, as well as nightly between Nov. 28 and Nov. 30. There were also two confirmed sightings on Dec. 3 and one on Dec. 6.

OK...whole article and zero detail about what anyone actually saw....Was it lights in the sky? What did it sound like? buzzing? jet engines? etc, etc....All this tells me is that security at Picatinny saw something in the sky.

I will tell you something that amazed me....Without disclosing what I do for work....I will just say that i was once "someplace" with 6 ex military personal....people who were all over seas in war zones during their time in the military. We were in a VERY remote part of the USA.....what we were doing meant that we had to be aware of other air traffic in the area...as we are standing there on a dead quiet morning I heard the faint sound of a turbo prop....I told the guys..."pretty sure I hear a C-130 coming"...They all looked at me like "What???" "How do you know that?"....im like well, listen to it...its 100% a turboprop, sounds like multiple engines... how many turboprops does the "BLANK" use? C-130...C-12 Huron....and sure enough I was right....and im like "havent all of you FLOWN on a c-130?? and you dont even know what it looks or sounds like?"

that surprised me, I thought these guys would know...im like maybe im more nerdy about planes than I originally thought lol.....

I guess my point is that just because someone is doing security at picatinny, I'm not convinced they aren't misidentifying airplanes as drones.

How are these vehicles a mystery to the military and the FAA? Wouldn't one, or both, parties say "those are ours, now bug off"

Because politicians don't want to come out and say...."folks...not sure how to tell you this without making you feel like idiots....but you are looking at goddam airplanes" So they rather humor the public and "look into it" Politicians will never tell the public they are crazy, or over reacting, dont know what they are looking at etc.

The FAA would know in 2 seconds if there is a car sized object flying around in NJ with no transponder on...and we the public would know shortly after when fighter jets were scrambled to intercept it....and jets on their way to EWR, JFK, LGA, etc would be being diverted....you can't hide that...every planes has hundreds of people typically....when they have to fly to another airport for unidentified air traffic...it would be news, pilots would be talking about it

Could it be some small hobby drones.....maybe, but thats not the videos im seeing people post.

You're part of the military-industrial complex, so we can't believe you. (JK, please don't deploy a UAV to blow up my shed.)

I think the govt is genuinely clueless about this. Also, our military does have some anti-drone technology, but my understanding is that it's not widely deployed. Here's a random theory that popped into my head: It's a loosely organized group of wannabe anarchist drone hobbyists copycatting each other for shits and giggles.

This thread makes my tin foil hat itch. Off shore drones? Lol

I once worked for DARPA (truly I did!)
At Picatinny and Ft Monmouth.
They have all the toys!

I can tell you what I did. I programmed tools that analyzed programs. the 80s were wild.
should have launched that into something useful rather than catching bin laden.

as soon as you look at them, they go dark. it has to be Elon, he's got that eye tracking stuff.

Need Rick - he knows the tracking nanobots were in the toothpaste all along,
how else could you get them replaced in just about everyone every day.

The comments are great

Like my first reaction would be isn't it totally obvious that this is an airplane?... Then you read the comments and wonder if people have ever seen an airplane at night before

Sometimes the comment section are better than whatever media they are attached to. This applies even outside the scope of this discussion

This sure beats the hell out of winter clothing threads.

I'm trying to break this down in a simple and concise way. By no means am I a genius in thought experiment, so this may sound entirely dumb but here it goes anyway.

So there are sightings, and we can break those into 2 groups: people who are clearly looking at planes without knowing it, and people who are seeing things that are not planes. While I'm 100% sure there are people in the first responder realm of govt. who fall into the former category, is it possible that every single one of the sightings, including the government "confirmed" sightings, are all 100% planes? Maybe.

So let's assume that every single sighting is a plane. Why would the NJSP send choppers out multiple times to look for and/or follow something around? Why wouldn't the government come out and say all the sightings are planes? Why would there be statements from multiple branches of government on this? Maybe a politician wouldn't want to come out and say "they're all planes you morons" but the FBI, Military, and FAA are all apolitical arms of the government. They presumably have nothing to lose by saying they are all planes, even if it was a fabrication. In fact this would be the easiest way to solve the problem. Are we just too early in the process to have this statement come out?

Alternatively, let's assume at least a few of these sightings are legitimately non-airplane objects. There are a few scenarios that come to mind. First is that someone majorly F-ed up some sort of top secret operation, and no one can admit it because it's classified shit and someone would have major egg on their face if it came to light. I think this is pretty far fetched, especially because the "it's just planes" option would be the easiest cover-up. Another possibility is that some nefarious actors have managed to breach our air space multiple times, and again no one would admit it because it would be a major defense and homeland security failure. It's another pretty far fetched scenario and the "just planes" excuse would be the easiest cover. But, the balloon thing from last year is a bit of a precedent, and the response to that incident is interesting in this context.

The balloon was at 60,000 ft and spent a lot of time flying over less populated areas. Military planes tracking it would not cause such a huge public disturbance. Even then, the military waited until it was tracked over open water to be shot down. And I'm sure there was a lot of analysis along the way (i.e. trying to detect what it was carrying). Back to the drones, there were some pretty interesting arguments earlier in the thread about closed airspace and jets that would be dispatched to shoot down unidentified drones. While this does seem to make sense, how would fighter jets manage to fly at a rate that can keep pace with a drone? As mentioned earlier, they struggle to go slow enough to escort a Cessna out of restricted air space. Also, there was mention in the balloon wiki that the balloons are tough to shoot down due to lack of signature, and I'm guessing a lot of that would also apply to drones. Again just a guess. Ultimately what I'm getting at is a major defense response along with shooting down drones with unknown cargo over the most densely populated are in the country seems like a pretty risky move and something that would get people pretty panicked in a hurry. I don't think there's any right answer in that context. But this is getting off the rails.

The final scenario I thought of, which to me is the most plausible outside of "everything is a plane", is that some one or a group of people were flying hobbyist drones and got too close to something they were not supposed to (like Picatinny). This caused a response, and then word got out, and people started watching the sky. Then it snowballed from there, when everyone started reporting every light in the sky as a drone.

Or, maybe it's all just a false flag, someone call Alex Jones https://www.reuters.com/world/us/nf...ongress-take-action-threat-drones-2024-12-09/

I watched it 3 times just to make sure I wasn't missing something. Then I watched it again with sound, JFC.

It's like a bad dad joke that got traction . I mean , I tell my daughter everytime I go out in the evening I saw a sasquatch in the back yard , or was it just the neighbors cat 🤔
