Dry January 2026 (The Sober Thread)

Yes. I am an assistant coach for my son's HS wrestling team. I am literally dealing with blood, sweat and tears for 3 months. Weekends are the most intense with tournaments; 10-12 hours of adrenaline and cortisol dumps. I lose my voice and can barely function come Sundays.

I still remember the locker room stink from wrestling practice. It’s ingrained in my memory banks forever. And yea, immune system is in overdrive for all wrestlers and coaches.

2/1 update:

Last night I took my wife to a long overdue fancy dinner, where I ordered a spicy, smoked old fashion. It was delicious and beautifuly presented. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I ate my delicious food without craving any more alcohol. I even turned down the complimentary Sambuca they offered me with my expresso.

I'm not an alcoholic. Never been a big drinker but it doesn't mean I haven't drank too much in my lifetime. Now that I'm pushing mid-50s, I need to do everything I can to stay strong and fit. The little things matter more than they did when I was in my 30s. These last 62 days of (mostly) eliminating alcohol from my diet has been great. I've lost 7 lbs, my gastro issues have cleared and my sleep has been so much better. I used to get up 3x a night, now it's only once.

I'm going to say this experiment has been a success for me. I will continue to keep alcohol out of my system. Now I have to work on eating better. That is the next journey.

Like others I made the choice to jump start better fitness/diet by going dry for January (started 12/26). Good results down six pounds. Don’t think I’ll stay dry but thinking about cutting back and only having an IPA out and not keeping them in the fridge, because I don’t have great will power.

My last one was NYE when we were out to eat. I made it to June last year, we'll see when I break this year. It honestly wasn't that tough this time around, and I'm thankful for that!

I made it to June last year as well, and I did Dry January again this year too. I also found it easier this year, and I rarely even drank NA beers. That said, rather than try and go past June, I'm planning to just drink occasionally when I feel like it, and try not to just drink regularly at home.

That is more or less what I've been doing - trying to limit drinks to just the weekends and so far this year I've generally been successful. Bearing in mind I've never been a big drinker. Two hard ciders Friday night and one imperial stout Sat evening.

However, one area that has NOT improved or gone well is my sleep. Holy hell has it been terrible the last few days despite no alcohol. I've tried melatonin, but results have been sporadic at best. I wish I could try gummies, but with my job those are not an option.

A few years ago I used to have terrible sleep health like 3-4 hours a night. part of the issue was the job I was at (got a new one) and part of the issue was drinking tea with caffeine too late at night. Switched to decaf tea and it helped but still was having issues due to my bad tinnitus in my left ear.

I got a white noise machine which helped improve it more, but also i take 2 ZZquil each night about an hour before I go to bed. This has helped a lot especially when I might wake up in the middle of the night for a bio break I can get myself back to sleep much quicker.

Maybe give the ZZQuil a try on a night where you don't have to be up on a specific time the next day. Might need to try it a few times to see if its effective or not for you.

You really need to just come to terms with the fact that nothing matters and life on earth is fleeting & pointless. Then you can focus on the good things like bikes and chocolate and NGAF about the shit that keeps you up at night.

Funny... I came to that conclusion decades ago.

Might try ZZQuil.

I've been trying to cut back on screen-time before bed and sometimes that helps. Last night was a bit rough as I ended up finishing the last few chapters of a book I was reading until 1am.

Then there are the dreams... OMFG, the dreams... does anyone ever have "pleasant" dreams... because I never do... In 55 years, I think I can count the number of "pleasant" dreams I've had on one hand. Pretty much everyone is more like a nightmare.

Part of my problem is the shoulder injuries... the right-side grade 2 separation and the left-side broken collarbone. Both make it rough to sleep on my side as it often causes the arm I'm sleeping on to lose circulation, often resulting weird dreams to make me wake up and reposition the arm. I've woken up with one arm completely numb. That's fun. I cannot sleep on my back as doing so will guarantee I'll have bizarre dreams. Sometimes I can sleep on my stomach, but I can't have either arm above my head or circulation gets cut off again.

Sucks getting old...
