Educate me on VPN choices

Unapologetic Lifer for Rock and Roll
So Mrs. G and I are in the process of cutting cable and checking out other options for streaming TV content.

She mentioned that we might want to use a VPN to guard against nasties invading through some of the streaming stuff.

I'm still largely ignorant of such things, so I'm wondering if our resident tech wizards could help enlighten me on this.

Thanks.

I too know nothing... but would like to watch "the classics" w/out being quite so "vulnerable". 🙄

I use Torguard because I can pay for it anonymously through bitcoin and it's dirt cheap and reliable. Tech support is top notch too.
I have it set up through my router so all devices on my network are now annonymized
There are very often 1/2 off coupon codes for torquard.

btw if you are doing everything legal a vpn doens't do shit.
but if you want to be crafty it's a must have. Also if you want to watch content from around the world that's blocked in our region, it's really nice.
You can set you location to austria and watch local cross races that you otherwise couldn't watch.

Chris, Can you get anything local by antennae? I got rid of satellite and put an antennae in the attic. Used the existing Coax and done. Got a bunch of channels coming in.

Check here to see whats in range.

Between the antennae and the Roku we are set... I even get Mystery Science Theater 3000 on one of the channels. lol.

Any good DVR options for cord-cutters? Thinking about making the switch and looking to record network shows from OTA. Also having a guide functionality would be A+ but nothing seems worth it.

I've used Vypr and Tunnelbear. Vypr's a bit more aggressive in terms of functionality. If you're torrenting as well as just watching blocked feeds, it's a good choice. Pretty manageable interface, not too much upsell, etc. Tunnelbear is dead simple to use and doesn't do anything you don't want. No upsell, no weird windows, no buttons that make you sad. It's useless for torrenting (designed that way), but awesome for feeds. I used it to open a BBC account for downloadable Euro shows, as well as live stuff... Did the same for Eurosport.

I'm getting closer and closer to cutting the cord. For those that have the Firestick with a certain app installed on it, I'm finding that you can watch some network shows, in HD, right after they have aired. As this type of thing becomes more common, cutting the cord will be an easier sell to the rest of the clan.

Don't know about anyone else.... but the more responses I read, the dumber I feel. 😳 Had to google torrenting..... 😵 can't think of a reason I'd need to be involved with it.... so... tunnelbear might be the ticket. Dead simple is more my speed.😀

I'd expect a crackdown on it first. Napster and torrenting, etc. were effectively shut down (or made not worth it) right when they were getting really easy to use.

I remember the days (not that long ago) where you could torrent anything at will, with no repercussions. Also fond memories of i2hub in college in the early/mid 2000s. It was quite possibly the golden age of the file sharing.

Edit: Don't use anything that you're not comfortable with the consequences of!

For quick and simple stuff, just use Opera as your browser. They released an update not too long ago with a built-in VPN that you can flip on and off. Limited location selection, but good enough for streaming and watching cyclocross via the UCI's YouTube channel.

Opera has come a long way as a browser.

I have heard good things about Private Internet Access for more typical VPN services. As @gtluke said above - pay in bitcoin. Also, using your go-to email account to sign up might/probably/will negate any anonymity from using BTC to pay.

I don't know man, everyone uses this app on the Firestick, you can even buy it on Amazon pre-loaded with the app. How are you going to crack down when no one is actually downloading anything, just viewing?
