Hi, I am new to the forum and a beginner mountain biker. I live in what I vaguely term "Central Western NJ". Basically, my closest place to ride would be the Sourlands Preserve in Somerset County. So I'll be looking for other people and places in CNJ. I hope to challenge myself and have fun, too.

I tried to stick around at Allamuchy today but the weather was ridiculous. I plan to go to the JORBA event. 🙂

You are in a good spot. 6 Mile Run and Chimney Rock are also close to you. If you got an hour to drive in any direction the world is your oyster.

oyster! ugh 😛uke: haha
I basically do drive an hour to get anywhere. Thanks for the welcomes. Time to explore the site more.

Welcome Aboard,,,
check out the rides section there is always something going on...

Hellooooo

welcome to the site, Here you will find many talents, good people, and some great riding locations in our great state, dont ever feel stupid about asking questions, we all were once newbies.."Well ok except for Ben, he came out of the womb wearing spandex and sucking on chain lube"...😀

Ride On!...

Mike

There's something in my elbow...

Got off work early so I went to Sourlands today for my first real attempt at MTBing and within 2 seconds I was on a pile of thornbush 😀 Ouch. But I didn't fall again, just dabbed at the rocks a lot. Had fun but I wish I'd tried more than I did.

I could hit places like Sourland, Round Valley, Six Mile Run, Chimney Rock. My work schedule is not usually play-friendly - maybe a weekend?
Boy trying to read solid reviews of these places online is awful: widely varying, totally subjective, and often asinine. The only way to rate them is if I hit them. I just hate going all that way to find out it's too advanced... 😡

But if it is tough I'll welcome someone who can show me how to be a better rider.

Dude,
if you can make it the Tuesday night rides at Allaire are a blast. A cool bunch of riders plenty of help and hints,we meet at the hospital road parking lot at 18:00. Come on down it is a real good time Frank leads the group on a great tour of the trails...

I'm going to try to make it to Allaire. I attempted Mercer County Park today, couldn't find the west side trail until I was done 😱 so went east, what a mess, mucked through mud forever. I came out looking like Swamp Thing.
Maybe tomorrow will be better if I can make it after work
BTW my bike is a mess, got cleaning tips? can i powerwash it?

Hi, welcome, how have you been? Where is Central Western NJ? I grew up in Bloomsbury, which I consider WCNJ. If Sourlands is your most local I would peg you near Flemington. If so, Round Valley is close.

Not subjective: Sourlands and RV are advanced, especially for a newbie rider.

Six Mile is not too much further than Sourlands, but it gets wet and stays wet. CR is intermediate, though it's never blisteringly bad save for a few of the climbs which you won't mind in time. Allaire is certainly beginner friendly but from CWNJ it's a reach. LM may not be too awfully far.

Mercer is fine for super locals but as they will tell you it's limited and it gets really, really muddy and doesn't dry until...well, I guess ever. It does freeze though.

Your dancing lock in the signature is a) visually distracting and b) suggesting that everything you say should warrant the thread being locked. Just sayin'...

Oi, my lock has the energy I need. Sing it:

it's my soul and my heart's inspiration
it's all I've got to get me by... ooooh baby

Sorry, lock wins.

Did Allaire today and it was cool, right where I need to be and work up to clips.

If RV and Sourland are tough then maybe I'll hold off. I can do some Sourland but I do have to stop and turn around at rocks.
I twisted my ankle realy bad at work today and my ride tonight made it worse. It is on fire. Won't be riding anytime soon 😡
