Gearing on a budget.

18 inch frame.

I'm not super bike savvy yet, but in the 2 years I've owned my Kona one20, I've never used the large (44t) and small (22t) center chain rings. I've only ever used the middle (32t) ring.

According to http://www.rideonenine.com/blog/1x9-conversion-dummies I should be fine just buying an outer bash ring, and a chain stopper.

The reason I don't just leave it be, seeing as it's such a cheap bike, is that it's all I'm going to be able to afford for the foreseeable future, and it seems that I can get it done myself for a little less than $60. The past few weeks my center derailleur has been skipping to the smaller/bigger chain ring even when not switching gears.

It's been adjusted about 20 separate times, and I'm just done with it. I'd like to see it gone if I can get this done for so cheap.

Worst comes to worst and I can't handle doing it myself, which is a possibility, approx. how much do you think it'd cost to have a LBS do it? (Say.. Town Cycle.) 🙂

And as always, thanks for whatever advice is given!

Did you replace the middle chainring or chain or anything of the nature recently? It could be that the chaiinring is worn out and the chain cant sit on it anymore properly. You can kinda see if thats the case by looking at the teeth if theyre really sharp and pointy then its all worn out. I'd also measure the chain stretch if you havent replaced the chain yet either.

The bike itself actually has less than 100 miles on it. (My SS gets a lot more use.) The middle chain ring is barely worn, but the chain itself does need replaced.

I'm really just wondering if that's really all that's needed for me to do a 1x9 conversion.

hmm if you replace the chain theres a good chance your cassette will need replacing as well but seeing as theres less than 100 miles on it I doubt it. Is there any particular reason the chain is going to have to be replaced seems to be pretty quickly.

Yeah all you need is some kind of chain retention system. i.e. bashguard + jumpstop or something like mrp 1.x. You can also take a link or 2 off the chain.

Ah ok sometimes you dont even have to replace it just lube it up real good and sometimes you can work out the stiff links as long as the chain isnt too far gone. And if thats the case all youll need is a tensioner and a bashguard and youll be set

I have to wait until my car is back from the shop before I go and spend any extra money at the moment. That, and what I'm currently driving isn't allowed to get dirty. 🙁

I'll be sure to get it in some time before August. 🙄
