Going Long and Hard.

OK. I think I'll do the Jersey Devil Fat Bike Adventure on Black Friday/Saturday. Would anyone be interested in a Staten Island Circ for GFBD? Obviously there are a billion points to leave the ride and do a shorter version but the coolest beach parts would be right at the beginning. I'll pre-ride it this Friday to confirm the top half is good. Last time I spent a lot of time going up and down streets to dead ends so this version should be a lot better.

Original Ride.

Updated Route.

I'm interested in this part as it's my proverbial backyard. Trails out here would be an option too, if you guys want. Let me know.

Define "pretty fast"...

Not fast pace. Fast like it’ll be road and easy riding so the mileage will go by. It’s 20 miles of mostly beach to the Verrazano and then road across the top. I want to explore the area between the Ferry and Fresh Kills on the north end. I’ve been in there with the kayak and have landed on beaches. Maybe @Bikeworks knows?

So I assume this means fat biking? If so, yea you should be good on the east side of the Island. From the Ferry to Fresh Kills, I'd say you're going to be confined to the road. You may hit a beachy part here and there, but there's so much industrial stuff over there that it would be prohibitive.

I spent the last couple days refining the route with Trailforks and Google Satellite. Gonna pre-ride it tomorrow.

So how'd that go?

That section under the Goethals down to Fresh Kills was kinda cool. There’s a lot of weird abandoned buildings and gravel roads back there. I had to throw my bike over a fence so it might not be legal but there weee no signs or people anywhere. I was also surprised Fresh Kills still isn’t actually open? Had to ride around to the back and go in off the bike path.

Will probably try to make a better version that comes back through singletrack instead of staying along the Arthur Kill.

Yea, I figured that would the the case over (Goethals).

Everyone is disappointed about Fresh Kills. The side I'm riding for the Gobbler isn't even open yet. They only open it for the race. The side you were on is the 9/11 recovery side and that's like 2 or so years behind North Mound.

There's singletrack all through the Greenbelt. You can take side streets along Victory from where you were near Fresh Kills to Eton Place. From there you can pick up the trails that run through Willowbrook, up into the Greenbelt proper, down to Richmond Ave greenway. From there you can go to Brookfield Park, or head south on streets to Conference house gravel roads. In between you have Bloomingdale Park, Wolfe's Pond (along with Kingdom and Bunker pond), as well as Long Pond (other side of Mt Loretto Trails).

Like I said, happy to show anyone around out here. 😎

Will take you up on that. Is there anything closer to Fort Wadsworth? Would like to do the beach up to that point and then fill in the way back. I used Trailforks to do some of Wolfe’s Pond but it’s not current.

Yeah. I see a bunch of stuff on Trailforks that looks like you could kinda mostly link something up.
You should be able to do that with a fat bike on the beach, yea. Not sure if you can pass the DEP plant at the bottom of Guyon via the beach. And Great KIlls harbor you will have to go around the back of the harbor and pop out onto Mansion Ave. Beach is nearly contagious after that I think.
