Going Long and Hard.

The Most Longest Day.

Drove up and stayed in beautiful Port Jervis, NY with the wife. As with any plans involving a woman, we got up there about 3 hours late because someone needed to eat, and pack, and drive back to the house because they forgot to pack all the things 🤷

Was hoping to start at daybreak to stay out of the heat but that plan went under pretty early on 😂

Top 50 miles were surprisingly windy. Every time I’d drop into the aero bars a gust would blow the front wheel away, and the 1x made the the climbs a bit much. Somehow PR’d the top though?

Planned on making my first stop at mile 125 in Browns Mills but it was hot enough that I only made it 100 miles before running out of fluids. I had my Apidura hydration pack and 2 bottles.

Hit the 200k mark at 6-hours so I was riding just at CR pace.

Not too far into Chatsworth I started realizing it was a little too windy for my current fitness level and my speed dropped quite a bit. I ended up stopping at Mick’s for soda and to sit in the shade for about 15-minutes?

Got into Egg Harbor or so and stopped again for some freeze pops.

Ran out of fluids again basically 15-miles from the finish and stopped for 2 more bottles. More to not be super dehydrated for the car ride home.

Probably my longest, longest day, but I felt good all day even with minimal fitness. Bike was super comfy and is an absolute home run for a legit attempt at some point.

I somehow want to try this one day. Maybe next year which is what I’ve been saying for about 5 years.

Meantime someone who knows someone did this today. Unreal.

What’s the record or FKT?

The Longest Day route KOM is 11:19. I see Andres was in a group that was hauling ass. Looks like he DNF’d in Brendan Byrne and the rest carried on? They don’t show up on the overall leaderboard so I’m not sure what part of the route they changed.

Yeah seems andres had a mechanical or something and the other guy kept going.

Oh fuck, Mike Goret was in that group. No wonder they averaged 23mph. Looks like 4 super strong dudes with sag and the whole 9. Ran a 10:52, which is why the KOM didn’t show up. They rode the ‘15 course and I set that at 10:44. They easily could’ve taken it but looks like they took a lot of breaks and stopped for lunch like civil people.

Recovery. Actually feeling this one a bit. Probably still a bit dehydrated.

Supposed to be doing another double with Major Taylor Philly this weekend but it looks like the ride is crumbling. Typical lots of interest and people signed up. Lots of talk about training. Lots of excuses why no one could train. Only 1 person in the group has ridden a century so far this year. I think I’m doing it alone 😂

Light week in the woods, recovering from The Longest Day NJ, and tapering for The Longest Day DE. I’m actually not sure how many times you have to ride back and forth to get 200-miles in Delaware. Maybe 5?

Anywhoo.

6-Mile was perfect Tuesday Morning.

And then Chimney Rock Wednesday Morning.

Also put 4-feet signs up all along my Commute. Not that your average Tesla Owner can read but at least I can try.

Have an overnight July 4th with David and then the biggest and most importantest ride I’ll do all year…

Where can we get those signs?

I can think of 20 places where those signs are desperately needed. Well, would be if NJ drivers looked out their windshields and not down at their phones while driving.

Yeah. On Father’s Day during my commute, a kid drove off the road and down into the river a few feet down from that sign. It’s a straight road with a 25mph limit. He went over the Bike Lane, a fence, through a dozen trees, and down like 15 feet into the water? The bridge in my last few commuting pics is the river down a 1/2 mile.

Sounds like he really wanted to piss off his dad for Father’s Day.

Longest Day Major Taylor Philly.

This ride had 2 groups, a 150 and a 200. The original plan was to ride to the 1st rest stop as a group, then the 200 would split and keep a more consistent pace.

After the 1st rest stop the 150 group was moving well enough that we decided to stay together until mile 75 where they’d head back north.

2 of the 150 group decided to stay with the 200 because we were moving pretty well. Not quite at the pace we needed, but OK.

Hit the 200 turn-around at Lewe’s beach and I was looking forward to a proper lunch stop.

1 of 1 options for lunch was a rather disappointing Açaí Bowl.

Was really looking forward to something more substantial. I was eating Nature’s Fig Bars all day and didn’t have a carb mix so calories were light. The stop took quite a while and 2 people were definitely hurting and more likely going to end up in the SAG before long. I took this as my cue to pick up the pace and make that happen sooner than later.

Not many miles later, I was alone. I made the call to put my head down and ride the 2nd half alone so I could get home today.

I skipped the next 2 stops and ran out of water because it got HOT. With 35ish to go I took a somewhat longer stop to get some fluids in me. My stomach was starting to go south so I could really eat or anything. I put my head down again and decided to bang out the end.

IMG_2769.jpeg

With 18 or so to go I ran into 2 of the guys that went by me while I took my long stop. We got back into a rhythm and had a good pace going towards the end.

Then they went around a circle and took the wrong exit and I was alone again. I yelled but they never heard me. I didn’t see any lights or anything and figured they were rerouting back to the course.

I rode tempo to the end and they showed up about 30 minutes later. Not sure how off track they went.

Quick wipe down and got changed to drive home. The rest of the group was hours away so I couldn’t wait, got home after Midnight as it was.

Super fun route. Way better than NJ. Will probably do this one from now on. And the logistics of doing a loop instead of point to point is phenomenal.

nice recap! thanks.

Longest Day Aftermath.

I would have stayed down in DE after the ride but my wife was leaving for Portland Sunday and I had to be home to say goodbye before she left.

Ended up eating the big bag of pretzels I had in the car during the drive home and like 3 Monsters that were in my cooler. Overall, not the ideal recovery after teetering on heat exhaustion most of the day.

Got home just after Midnight and drank like a galling of water. As soon as I laid down I got a pretty brutal hamstring cramp in my not quite back up to speed leg. It was not pleasant. I moved to the downstairs couch where I could sit up and not extend that leg. With getting up to pee every 20 minutes I got barely any sleep before saying goodbye to my wife and heading to work.

Ate all day, everywhere. Barely made it home. Fell asleep on the couch, just woke up and feel good to go. Haven’t had a reaction to a ride in a long time. Especially when I felt good all day despite the heat.
