Hartshorne Trail maintenance info

It would be Da Bomb if during the longer upcoming daylight hours we could put some volunteer time in after work starting around 5pm. Back in the old days we used to meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings under the direction of the rangers and the world famous Wally Tunnison.

If I put the following Thursdays up, who else would show up besides Eric?

We are going to be working on putting a new trail in to connect to Twin Lights.

@pooriggy conditions were as well as to be expected given current stuff, but thought it would be a good idea to let someone know that the re-route from Rocky Point counter-clockwise (around the large fallen tree ~1000 feet along from the paved road) is collecting water at the bottom. The rest of the trail leading up to/after is firm, but there's a nice rut dug at the base of the re-route.

Who should we talk to about widowmakers? I saw a couple while riding, where a tree dropped a limb onto another tree. They are not obvious from the ground, but I just happened to look up at the right (wrong) time. I know they're a touchy subject for removal, since the risk of injury is high, etc.

I'll take a look at wet spot on Rocky pt.

I attached map of Hartshorne, circle area of widowmaker and send it to me, I'll forward it to park manager.

Today was the first tm session of 2022, we had a solid crew and repaired the ruts on flow trail and cleaned out water bars.

If you are available, please come out on Monday mornings or Thursday evenings to help with the trails. We're building a new trail next week, I'd like to get this in before it gets too hot.

Let me know if you can help.
Thanks!

Monday's 9-12pm
3/28, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25

Thursday's 5pm-7pm
4/7, 4/21, 5/5

@pooriggy attached here. Widowmaker #1 already fell, so, I guess that's just a regular tree removal, anyway

It looks like the woodchips and giant woodchips [end cut logs] remediation on the claypit connector trail is beginning to fail.

We had a nice start to the new trail yesterday. Super cold and gnarly with the wind but everyone still kicked butt!

This new trail might not be the first stop for a mtn bike ride but I could see it being used for a quick cool down/site seeing. Primarily it will be a very nice add-on to the park and will show the MCPS folks some very good sustainable trail building.

We didn't get far as we had a few hard things to things to deal with. The couple of pics are of some bench cut through frozen material, rock, garbage and vines. Chris added a couple of dips to the start of this small climb and Brian and I did one at the bottom to make sure water sheds off.

After working for a few hours @pooriggy brought us through the mark outs he did. Once cut it will be a very nice trail with good drainage and a great overall feel and flow to an area not used before. Big props to Chris for putting out such a good layout. (It's hard to do)

There are a bunch of TM's on the calendar and I think if people show up this trail can get knocked out before it gets too hot. It will be the perfect place to bring your SO, kids, friends, etc and say you helped do work on!

I am really amped to be able to add to the trail network in Hartshorne at Rocky Point. For me this is one of the most beautiful areas in the state with trails.

The trail will only be half a mile in length, but it will connect to an impressive state landmark with incredible views. Twin Lights is worth a look.

Come out and help if you can.

A few pics from the TM's this past week (Monday morning and last night).

Iggy's trail from the school to Twin Lights is cut out and just needs some tire tracks and foot prints to pack it in.

I know it's hard for people to get to TM's but maybe give it a lap next time you are in the Rocky Point area. The view is pretty amazing and adds to how beautiful and special those woods are.

I rode the new Twin Lights connector for the first time yesterday. Great work people!
Although it was apparently only my third best time. Looks like I did it in 2017 the first time, not sure how that happens on a trail that was only built in the last month.
I’ve gone to the twin lights by cutting through the ball fields before.
There’s times from at least 2014

that is some gorgeous looking trail! i've got some local trails here in edison that we've been building up over the years. there's one really rooty section that is totally off camber, that i would love to bench cut, but whacking through those roots is BRUTAL! i'm curious, was all of this hand cut? it looks amazing! can't wait to ride it soon!

More from today. This is on the Rocky Point/Water Tower side of TLC/Twin Light Connector.

All the heavy hitters were out today and we got a lot done. Might not be able to ride the whole section yet but it will help to put down tire tracks on this new stuff.

1 - Iggy and Chris on the Tiller
2 - Half the crew including @pooriggy and @knobbyhead doing their thing
3 - The section that Angel and I worked on this morning. There is a little double dip that should be fun on the bike and will shed off water well.

Chris used a rottertiller to break up the thatch layer. It made it so much easier to bench cut.

Man, not to brag, but the crew today was a well oiled machine. We accomplished a lot.

For those who ride these trails, this is a great way to give back and improve this trail system. Come out and join us!!

Yeah, We've had a steady crew working on this trail once a week since the end of March. Trail building is not easy and it takes time to develop a touch on the tools. This crew is dedicated and has become talented trail builders, which makes building trail more efficient.

We are always looking for more help, but at the same time the park system is thankful for the few who do so much.

Please join us if you can, we have a lot planned for the trails, you can make a difference.

Couple from today. Just about done with the first pass on the Rocky Point water tower side. We will have some fine tuning especially as it gets used more but for the most part it is usable all the way thru and back.

Great to have the usual crew again including @pooriggy and @knobbyhead.

Pics:

- Iggy and the tiller
- Swoopy turn that Angel, Knobby, Larry and I worked on. Knobby and I found a nice honey hole of material that will be used to top coat this next week.
- Me on a grade reversal/dip last Thursday while testing things out. Functional things can be fun.

Yes, what Don said.

The trail going to Twin Lights has enough elevation to make it fun, flowing on contour lines. It's only a half mile long but a fun run.

Thank you Kathy, Larry, Steve, Bob, Gary, Don & Angel.

Don & Angel sculpting what they see in their head and rides great on bikes. #Vision
