Can someone please tell me what the advantage is in chaining and binding yourself to a dwelling over renting a dwelling is? I've both "owned" and rented and I guess I'm doin it wrong, but I could give a fat frogs ass about owning a home right now.... Got no job and I don't know what I want to do when I grow up.
Tell me dammit, Whats good yo!

If you're planning on staying in the house for at least 6-8 years and I know you are, its worth buying. Building equity (it should take that long for you to see a measurable increase in equity), tax benefits (minor, but still there), and eliminating a-hole landlords messin with your privacy.

IMO, owning is the way to go. I'm stationary for a number of years, so it's worth it for me.

We have only owned our house for a month and it sure is cool to come home to a place knowing its yours. I consider us pretty lucky bc of our location, the property and the deal we were able to get.

One neighbor next door is quiet and there really is no one else around us. We dont have to wait for the washer/dryer either.

By renting your money goes no where. Owning a home is an investment which hopefully could make you a few bucks if you decide to sell.

If you are in the postition to do so Id say buy something. If not find some cheap place to live and bank as much money as you can.

are you serious?
if you rent you will never have anything to show for it.
if you buy you are building equity in a house, that will appreciate over time.
This is good
1. get job
2. save $ for down payment on house
3. buy house
4. live happily ever after🙂

Sir, I see what you are saying, I have owned a home before... Ex-wife got sick, and I busted my heiney to keep things going and to no avail... Me, ex-wife and kids were thrown out into the street. I am not a scumbag by far. But was treated as if I was the biggest scumbag..... I have still not gotten over that whole expierience.... My current wife is on a home buying mission and I just want to eat a bullet! right now the very thought of "owning" a home makes me want to run away! If you ever had you and your children thrown out of the house that you "own" you might have an idea where I'm at. I would rather live in a tent in the woods with my bikes than to ever "own" another home in this POS state! I "owned" my home for five years and was worse off than if I would have rented. Nothing is permanent . Sorry really tweaked today. 🙁

I'm not sure what the point of this is.... Just blowing off steam? I can understand that.

Oh yeah.... BINGO!
Extremely stressful day topped off with an extra topping of stress. 🙂
could not run away with my bike fast enough today, and my good friend Reggie is hurtin so he can't run away with me... just a lil overflow. Thanks for reading and any suggestions are welcome.

Just cutting my own lawn, tinkering around fixing (and sometimes breaking) things and blasting Slayer at "11" whenever you feel like it, is reward enough for home ownership.

Just cut the lawn Saturday blastin some Pro-pain and some Ministry .... grass is cut and if this house was "mine" I'd still be in the same spot. My landlord gives two poops if i cut the lawn. they work with me in this tight time... A bank will send the sheriff over to give two poops about you cuttin grass blastin Slayer (which is the Devils music, but I listen to it because I'm a heathen)
when it comes down to living beyond paycheck to paycheck... I would rather deal with another human that can help than a non human entity that doesn't care that you are working on a goldmine job that will
pay the rent for two months.... doesn't matter.

// sour bastard I am today.
No offense to any of you fine people, it's just that nobody else will listen to me bitch today and if I don't get this off my chest it's gonna ruin my ride tomorrow. 😀
thanks all.

I spent too many years renting and I so regret it. It's like throwin ur $$ away and dealing with asshole landlords.( I was a pretty good tenant too) It's a buyers market. Can you get something decent that you can improve ? I know a good carpenter. You can always call if you need to vent--or ride,,,:argue:

Sean s**t happens, don't let one bad experience guide you. Reggie is right if your plans are the stay in POS state for years buy a home. Your know the wife alway's win's these decisions.

Thanks Patty! I'm sure things will work out just fine.
It's just one of those times when everything gangs up on you at the same time and you don't have the mental capacity to digest and
deal with on a normal level. At least that's what happens to
me.
When the going gets tough, the tough gets weird! 😀

I hear ya Bob. I try not to let that expierience dictate how I live, it's hard though. I never ever want to be in that position again ever. And I worked harder than I ever worked before, and got absolutely nothing to
show for it other than bad memories and child support payments.
I want to get over this in a bad way sir.

Think about your days before the unfortunate experiences with the sheriff. Just a guess but I bet it's worth repeating.

Besides, its a buyers market. Probably better to buy now than when you owned.

to give another perspective, i've read some articles that say to rent and put the money that you are saving (deposit, lower monthly payments) into investments will yield a higher value historically

i don't know if i buy it, but it's interesting thought

There's a ton of Rent Vs Buy calculators out there. Don't just assume housing saves you money.

Pretty much anyone who bought 5 years ago would have been better off financially if they rented. The Obamabucks are over and the Fed is cutting back on buying mortgages so what's propping up house prices now has been slowly going away. Doubtful we'll see any 20% drops but prices may drag lower than inflation for quite awhile.

There's tons of pros to living (that I don't have as a renter) such as being able to do what you want.

"Throwing money away on rent" is BS. When you live in a house you throw plenty of money to property taxes, interest payments and repairs/upgrades. The only difference is in a house you are forced to put money towards the principal. If you're one to spend any cash laying around you probably won't make out renting long term.

I could have bought my condo twice with the rent I paid. That being said,.. additional responsabilities = additional stress (for me). I get a lot of satisfaction out of doing stuff around the house for myself, but, at the same time would not mind some one else cutting the lawn while I pedal. I can have the back yard to myself, but, if shit hapens to the house, it's my job to fix it. there are a lot of variables. I hope I have cleared some things up for you, or not? I hope you are taking notes.... Seriously though, I sometimes feel DOOMED,.. and then I ride with my favorite bunch of dirtbags, and it helps, a lot.

Johnee,

I believe home ownership is a liability rather than an asset. ( Read this ) My belief is re-enforced every time some unexpected repair has to be done to the house. Examples: last month it was $800 for a new water tank, this month AC repair $450, and in another year the roof will have to be replaced and oh let’s not forget the drive-way has to be repaved.

The upside is you can do whatever you want in your own home but I’m still not convinced it’s worth it. So I share all this Johnee to tell you I feel your pain man....I feel your pain.

I could give a fat frogs ass about owning a home right now .... Got no job !
Sorry, thats just wrong ... No need to go racial!
I also think if you have job security in these very difficult times, buying a home is a plus. However, your job could end at anytime and you could be on the street.

Steve has good points here, Tommy and I are renting right now. I have not worked steady in almost two years, it is very scary. Renting we can leave at anytime with no binding contracts.

Stay thirsty my friends ...
