Heartburn on the bike

Serious question here.

When doing intervals, or any hard effort, I get heartburn. If I'm doing intervals regularly, I'm getting heartburn morning, noon and night, even when I'm not on the bike.

Anyone else have this happen? Any one have any suggestions to make it go away?

Things I've tried :
Giving up coffee (didn't work, not worth the suffering)
Giving up beans (sort of worked)
Giving up spicy food (didn't work)
Eating tons and tons of Tums (works, but only temporarily)
Drinking less water on the bike (didn't work)
Proton pump inhibitor drugs (works, but there have been studies showing issues with taking these long term).

Nothing seems to make it better.
HELP!

See a gastroenterologist. I had gastro-reflux for years - this is not good long-term, untreated can lead to esophagus erosion or cancer. They will likely do an endoscopy to see if there is any damage, then prescribe something to treat the problem. I've been on dexilant (a PPI) for years. My gastroenterologist has no issue with taking this as a permanent solution.

Yeah that's the thing. I saw a GI and he prescribed the PPI after I had an Endoscopy and found nothing unusual, other than a charred esophagus.

PPIs with long term use have been shown to inhibit nutrient absorption, increase risk of dementia, and increase risk of fractures.
I stopped using them because I felt the GI sort of just hit the easy button and prescribed PPIs instead of actually getting to the bottom of the situation.

What specifically helped you the most, do you think?

I gotta go with Rick here - having that acid getting where it shouldn't is real problems.

the fractures might be from a lack of vitamin absorption - which makes sense - but that would seem like a dosage problem.

dementia increase - from my understanding there is a correlation with close family members. which probably has a close correlation with reflux.

maybe you just produce too much? and drugs are the solution.
you've done a lot of self experiment - so if it isn't diet, and the system is closing as it supposed too, then it may just be "you".

Yes there is no confirmation that PPIs increase dementia. Recent hypothesis suggests it could be related to years of taking aluminum containing antacids prior to PPI use. In any event, I'd rather risk dementia in my 80s vs cancer in my 60s.

I used to suffer from heartburn alot, like all day, everyday... Went to the GI, had the endoscopy done and all that, At one point was in the hospital for it. I didn't want to take a pill everyday so I did some research on homeopathic ways to help digestion.

Long story short - I've found the right combo of things that work for me naturally to keep it under control. BUT when things flare up from time to time, i'll throw some peppermint oil in my water and it seems to chill things out. It's not a magic fix but it helps. Seems to chill it out and take the edge off burn.

I'm no specialist in this area, just someone who has had to deal with heartburn for many years and found some things to get it under control.

That shit sucks and I hope you find your wining combo. Life is way better without having to constantly deal woth that discomfort.

THC oil also helps as well 😉

@jShort - take the bud and cook it in olive oil and then use that oil to make brownies... Non pinterest recipe 🙂

doctors push meds bc of kickbacks. i hate doctors

the feeding time in correlation with exercising was the winning ticket. i cut out all spicy food as well as increasing daily intake of H2O...I tried the peppermint oil, had some success for Mike, not for me though... worth a shot with the discomfort.

when i was having issues, Mike was right there with the some suggestions and I did a lot of reflecting of what I eat.... what do you eat throughout the week that can cause long term effect on your stomach.( you may not realize the damage that its creating for you when on the bike)

FWIW- my diet is a VERY bland diet now--BORING

cut out all spicy food
What's the point of life without Sriracha? And coffee?! JK at this point everything is on the table.

@Norm suggested keeping a food log, and markng where I got heartburn, and the pattern may become apparent.
Ideally I'd like to figure out a way to control it with diet changes, but if that doesn't help, I will definitely not hesitate to take PPIs.

Thanks @rick81721 @Mountain Bike Mike @fidodie @Flaubert for the input! Honestly it's a comfort to know I'm not the only person that deals with this.

PRO TIP 🙂
Once you understand how your stomach digests different types of foods and understand what makes your stomach mad, you will be able to begin fixing the constant irritability.

Once you've pissed your stomach off, it takes a while for it to get back to a happy state.

GERD- peppermint oil won't help. It will inflame it as the heartburn is stomach gasses getting past your "flapper" or LES muscle.

But here, this helped me a lot when I was experiencing this. It's quite normal.

lost me at sphincter. 😀
Seriously, GERD sucks. I haven't been able to control it without PPI's
You may also try Pepcid complete. It works pretty well and quick for me when I get into trouble.
Good luck!
