Helmets...Get Yer Helmets....

I have sold many helmets this week to guys who typically might not wear them.

I asked them where they are riding.. They all said 6 mile. And that they heard that you have to wear a helmet to ride there.

So.. speaking up to the helmetless works.

Saw these two knuckleheads several times....not paying attention nor giving right of way to the approaching equestrian.

It is almost like we need pamphlets printed up that we can all carry & handout..."How not to be a dumb-a$$ on a mountain bike"...

:hmmm:But they'd probably litter the trail w/them...

It might be easier to just tell them about MTBNJ.com

Chances are good that they will read this post. They might also get hooked on the sport and be changed forever. Their asses might become less dumb even.

Good to hear.

Don't be hating on Walmart bikes,Sam Walton is a pioneer in carbon look technology, I've gotten mine faster at least, once🙂

of course I meant no offense to our Walmart-bike-riding MTB brothers and sisters that do wear their helmets.😛

I'm pretty sure if it was not for the helmet I would have been in some hurt at the race on Sunday. I changed my avatar for that reason. Yesterday in a dumb not thinking move I rode around my neighborhood with the wife helmetless when the wife realized she yelled at me and I deserved it! 😱

Unless you are trying to teach your kids about wearing helmets, riding around the neighborhood without a helmet is pretty standard for me. My wife and I do not wear helmets and I don't feel the least bit uncomfortable. I mean, I used to jump 20'+ doubles without a helmet, so going 10mph around the neighborhood seems pretty harmless. So everytime you work on your bike and go for a spin, your gonna grab the helmet?

i went out with mandi and two of my buddies. my one friend didnt have a helmet. the other guy i went with had one of those white foam helmets. he felt like a goon but at least he was better than getting yelled at for not having one 🙂

i was thinking of riding with it and making people that didnt have it wear it until they got out of the trail 😛

While I agree with what you said I read the below topic from MTBR and changed my mind afterwards. Its just like with cars where you feel the most comfortable riding / driving you are more likely to have an accident. So, to answer your question while I always? Probably not, but I will try to for sure.

This will change almost any persons mind about wearing a helmet!

I've been mountain biking for 17 years and the last few years I've seen helmet wearing declining on the trails and road. More than 1/2 the people I encounter on trails don't wear helmets. When I take my hybrid out for a spin on the road and paved trails in parks, it's pretty much down to 10-15% helmet wearing.
I really don't care if people wear them. Just an observation. I never wore a helmet as a kid and did a lot of stupid sh*t on my bike! It's a miracle I never cracked my skull. I know better now! 🙂

I saw a new one last night. Father and daughter are out riding at dusk on a main road. Father is in front, with no helmet, but a blinky light front and back. Daughter is in back with no lights but with a helmet. I guess they only had enough safety gear for one...

My helmet saved my head last night.

I saw 4 guys riding at 6 mile on Sunday. The first 2 were way out in front of the other 2, but they said 2 riders were behind them. They were both wearing helmets. We soon passed the 3rd guy and he had a helmet too.

The 4th dude was WAY back behind the 3rd. He had no helmet on but he did have an i-pod in his ears. He was riding a bike with the seat way too low and really struggling. He looked like he was about to die any minute.

It struck me that out of this group of 4, the guy who most needed a helmet was the one w/o one. I rode by and pointed at me head. Maybe he knew what I was gesturing about.. but I doubt it.

In this scenario I sort of blame the faster friends for not looking out to educate the newbie of the group.

Saw a guy there yesterday on a nice silver/black Niner using a yellow baseball cap as a helmet. Funny part was that he was wearing some AMA t-shirt showing a guy jumping a quad with full gear on.
He was, of course, lost...and asked for directions back to the canal lot. I kindly told him that he had to wear a helmet, and how to get back to the lot. Guy said his name was Joe. If anyone sees him again I am curious as to if he'll have on a brain bucket.
Next rider I encountered, also lost...but with a helmet. No shirt at all...but hey its a free world, and he was wearing a helmet.

Was also good to put a face to Young Doc in the trail yesterday...

I'm glad the story ended with just findign out who Young Doc was, as opposed to the natural progression the story was taking:

First no helmet...
Then no shirt...
Finally, no pants...?
