IGVENTURE

I think norm cootied us last weekend, been fight this cold, but it ain't givin' in...

Damn Clapper, I better get myself together to hang with you next Saturday.

Tom's not open on Sunday, you mean Saturday. Saturday morn is prime riding time, I usually stop in at the shop during the week when its dead.

no, he's been there on sundays. We usually go to church at 9, eat at joanies til 11 and then stop in w/ coffee. Unless that changed in the past 2 weeks 😕

Base
Base miles are coming to a close, this Saturday I plan to throw down at the ST race at Mooch. For me racing in March is about getting ready for races in April which are way more important. I haven't done any interval work, other then hitting some hills here and there on the road or mtb while out riding around.

I'm not sure how I stack up on base miles, Vreeland has like 10,000 miles since January while I have this;

This year
Count: 38 Activities
Distance: 1,012.63 mi
Time: 74:58:14 h:m:s
Elevation Gain: 55,069 ft
Avg Speed: 13.5 mph
Avg HR: 133 bpm

is this good?...I don't know. Generally speaking I ride 10hrs/wk and take every 3rd week off. There may be like another 80mi/8hrs. on this due to the fact that I don't use my garmin when on the rollers.

Intensity
I have been turning the screws somewhat by adding tempo rides in over the last 3 weeks. I've been keeping them at the 2hr. range but yesterday I had enough daylight to get in a little longer ride. The wind was not as bad yesterday and was able to bust out the 20.

I plan to use the ST races to work the high end interval stuff. I will probably throw some shorter interval stuff in during the week on the road bike. Once the HG Tuesday A ride rolls into town I'll use that as well to work the high end stuff.

I really want to be ready for the endurance mtb races like BS50, DH40, Mooch something something, CP...For the endurance stuff I plan to throw some century rides in at tempo pace on the road.

I wanted to talk about short term goals as well as long range ones but this post has gone on too long. I save the goal stuff for the next one.

I want to talk about goals. Everyone who does this training blog thing seems to pull something out of their ass and claim it to their Goal.

After some soul searching and ass probing I came up with just 2 goals, a short term one and a long term one.

Short Term Goal
Looking at the roughly 15 races I plan on doing this year only one has grabbed my attention to focus on a specific goal. My specialty is the endurance mtb races and I do put long training rides to be prepared for these. Yeah I want to do well in the BS50, the DH, the yet to be named Mooch Enduro but what I really want to do is 8 laps at Cathederal Pines. The really fast enduro guys have done 8 laps...I want to be one of those guys. Last year I missed the cutoff by 2 minutes and got 3rd place in SS open. To me doing 8 laps is bigger then getting on the podium. If I could do 8 laps getting on the podium would be a consolation prize.

Long Term Goal
I've shared with my teammates Kirt and Chris G that my only real goal is to stay healthy and maintain my passion for riding and racing into my 50's. I turned 46 over the weekend so I am getting closer to my goal. I've experienced burn out from riding once in the 10 yrs that I've been cycling. Family, friends, cycling, job, house...keeping it all together at the right pace is something that you learn. I find it inspirational to see cyclists like Dave Clapp, Art & Ellen White still riding competitively in their 50's. When you look at the 50+ class its a lot smaller then the 30's & 40's classes...but your looking at the creme of the crop.

Oh and I raced on Saturday at the Mooch ST. I felt good for the 1st race, Utah only beat me by 2 minutes.

Partying under the disco ball on my birfday.

I'm glad I can be a source of inspiration to you, though I've got nothing on the White's and the super fast 50 dudes.

It's interesting that completing eight laps at Cathedral is your biggest goal for this season. Kirt and I had no problem finishing eight, what's the big deal.

Lastly, you're going to have to change the midpack signature at some point this race season. It's no longer going to be applicable.

I have no goals, literally none at all. I mean, the same sort of shit everyone does: be young, have fun, drink Pepsi. But I'm old and don't like soda, so that leaves fun.

Fuck it dude, let's go bowling.

You did awesome out there, im dreading seeing you again in my rearview at bearscat....actually, im thinking we should link up if we start at the same time this year.

What other races are on your schedule? You planning on any MASS races? Stoopid 50/Rattling Creek?

Have not planned on doing the Mass series enduro's. Everyone says how well run they are but the commute to these to and from is too much. Doing a hotel is too much for my marital and financial budget. If there was no other enduro's to do then I'd do the drive, but looking at my schedule I'll be doing about 15 races this year without having to travel too much.

Battenkill is going to be a long day(drive out/race/drive home) but I really want to check that out.

@Utah, not sure if i can keep up with you at the start of BS50. I'm more of a slow steady guy, my splits at that race were a minute apart. Although if I want to get on the podium I do need to push my pace more.

First of all, belated happy birthday to my teammate who shares my first name, birth year, and manly build. 😛

I'm pushing for the 8 laps at Cathedral this year myself. I mainly need to get to the start on time and avoid the conga line I was mired in for the entire 1st lap last year, and that will help. 😱

And I well intend to keep you company in the 50+, even if I'm still stupid enough to be racing Open SS by then.

TBH I didn't give 8 laps much thought until about 1/2 way through the race last year. At that point I could not make up the time to make the 6 hr. cutoff to start an 8th lap. 51 min laps or less is my goal.

Buying a used car on CL sucks. I guess dealing with a car salesman can be a hassle too. Shmev is on a quest to get a car since he gets his license in April. This brings me in the mix since I have to go look at what he finds on CL.

I'm prolly gonna sound like an old fart when I say the whole CL process is whack. There is no etiquette when it comes to texting. Back in the day when you made a phone call to respond to want ads things were taken just a bit more seriously.

I went to meet a dude tonight in Plainfield to look at a car. He left rendevous point at 7:00 when we had a 7:00 appointment. I show up at 7:01 and find out the guy left...through a text of course. I call the fucking guy and he says to meet him down the road at his house. I get to the guys house at 7:05 and someone else is looking at the car and ends up buying it. There were other issues I had about the car...like the fact that the seller knew nothing about the car history and he is selling it because his friend owed him money so he gave him this car. This guy had every shady stereotype in the book.

If anyone is selling a car in the $3500 price range let me know.

Today we sodded the driving range tee I shaped last fall at Howell Park GC. I wanted to go with seed but the big bosses wanted sod. Sod is instant green but in July it is tough to keep alive since it doesn't have much root structure. Its all top growth. Seed takes a little longer to grow in but its a healthier turf.

6963073873_6f09b5fab0_z.jpg

The sod process was pretty cool. It came in 4' x 20' rolls, like carpet. The rolls go on an adapter mounted on the 3pt. hitch of a tractor. The guys jokey it into position lining up the seams and I just rolled it out. I must say it was really easy. With 1 tractor and about 8 guys we were able to bang out about 5000sqft./hr. This is how they put sod down on football fields. If you had multiple tractors going with bigger crews you could sod a whole field in less then 2 hrs.

16,000 sqft. of 1/2" bluegrass sod. Alls we need now are soccer goals.

After work I banged out my tempo ride. Heading west in Monmouth county is always more of an effort in these windy months. Its just a constant breeze that never seems to let up, the further west you go the closer to the source you get. I was determined today to hit the 20mph avg, wind be damned. I was working harder then tempo at some points but speed is power and power is money. Once we get more daylight next week I'll be able to do these for 3hrs. I kinda liked ramping these up to the 3hr. mark...I'd like to think I'm pacing myself and hoping to prevent the fade that I experience during the later part of the race season.

The first 5 minutes my HR was giving false readings due to the wind howling at my jersey. Once I lubed up with some sweat I got accurate readings. These splits give an indication of how windy it was. I prefer the out and back when seeking the 20mph avg. It neutralizes any wind advantage.http://connect.garmin.com/activity/155842441

Let me clear my throat. Its Monday, back to the job but let me recount the wknd for ya.

The pic above taken by Norm really sums up the post race seen at the short track. The guys wheel you were chasing with everything you've got for the last 40 minutes is now parked next to you and all you can say is damn brotha nice race.

These races are a kick in the nuts, a swift and deliberate blow. It hurts. But to get faster the pain needs to be inflicted. There is also an in- the- moment thing going on that makes the whole experience somewhat euphoric.

Post race makes you forget about your nutsack and have a laugh. Reality replaces euphoria as you cheer on other racers and get stoopid. With a 40 minute race you can hang out after the race and still be home before the wife gives you the you've been gone all day speech.

Yesterday I met Mattyb, Falco and 26er to mark the new ST course. I'm really looing forward to racing it this weekend. This course is more downhill turning technical. It has some climbing but nothing crazy, I want to say less climbing then the other course but I may think differently after I race it.

Afterwards the 4 of us went out on a tour of Mooch. I needed to get back on the rocks to keep honing the tech skills. Coming down Candy Ass I flatted and took an hour to put a tube in. I could not get the nut off of my valve stem and took forever to unthread the bitch. Me and 26er were like cavemen attacking it with a knife and screwdrive bit. Once we got going again Matty yelled at me for going too fast, I slowed down. We found John from Cycleworks along the way and he provided the entertainment by wheeling over everything. That guy is amazing.

Luke got some great shots Saturday at the race. These pics could make it in Bicycle World magazine or maybe even Oui.

Ha I said stop having a pissing contest, 26er easily falls into it cause he has an addictive personalty 😀 But add skillz man in it and he wanted to show you he can beat you in style. Young Rob got it but most you crazy racers dribble all over your shoes all the time...

i find it somewhat easier to go over rocks faster, what i lack in balance i can make up for in momentum to carry me through it. 26er on that ss has to keep it crankin otherwise he runs out of torque.

it was good to slow down though to work on balance and lines. I've gotten better on candy ass but rogue is more my speed...not too extreme.
