IGVENTURE

Nice, Clapper...I think u took that pic.

Mtb Broke

Well my mtb is broke again, I managed to snap another der. hanger. Yesterday I planned an out my back door adventure that involved riding through the Watchung Res. hopping on some roads to connect to South Mountain then looping back for a 3 hr. tour. The bike was shifting funny so I stopped off at HG in Millburn along the way for a cable adjustment and I was good to go. I continue to South Mountain which is about 1/2 mile away and make my way around some trails. At one point I come down this rocky tech section while these 20 something yr. olds are playing frisbee. I show off a bit as they cheer me on and give a shout out as I continue on.

Along the way I notice my hub is not spinning freely, the same issue I had a Jungle before I snapped my dh hanger...uh-oh. At this point I decide to head back to HG to figure this out. Somewhere in the middle of no where in South Mountain my DH snaps. I am 15 miles from home and about 4 miles from HG but I have no idea how to get there at this point. I stumble upon one of the frisbee dudes walking back to his car as I'm walking in circles. He offers to give me a ride to HG which was really awesome.

The shop was closing but I managed to get in and show Luke what happened. He see's that the small bolts holding the dh hanger are rubbing against the cassette and not allowing it to spin freely, which in turn put torque on hanger. Problem diagnosed, new dh ordered and I get a ride home from my buddy John Kuhn who works there. If anything else I am getting really good at developing an exit strategy once I brake a dh.

Breakin the Law Breakin the Law
Yes I know Watchung and South Mountain are illegal to mtb's. I rarely go in there but I must say that I need open space for recreation and to train for the WC 100. I live in Union County and have no where to ride my mtb, these parks are the closest to me. I'm very courteous to hikers I encounter and have not had any problems, but I rarely go in there. When I ride outlaw I don't wear team colors and keep a low profile. Those that don't like it can SaD.

Random Thoughts
Rap music depresses me somewhat. Those guys are always singing about money, weed and girls on they D. Basically this is all just a reminder of stuff I ain't gettin.

No one had every said, "Hey you can't ride in here!" to you as you pass?

Everytime i ride through the Res on the roads, i see a Union County cop sitting somewhere and figure it's not with trying to MTB.

People are more upidy in South Mountain, I do remember getting the stare down from I'm better then you housewives.

Watchung res. has so many places to duck in and out. If I see a cop sitting in the lot I go up the road and duck in. Once I'm in he ain't gonna leave his coffee an donut to chase me.

I think the whole SMR experience is best done during the day when most people are working, very early in the am while most people are in bed or having coffee or when it's a shi!!y day.

Just race aid station to aid station for as long as you can and don't think of the race as a whole. When it rains it only sucks for the first hour...and every hour after that. Plan ahead to be warm during the rain and you won't even notice it after a bit. Oh yea..don't forget to enjoy the ride too 🙂

It's looking like there is definitely going to be some rain for this race, hopefully its not pouring all day. I am looking to this as kinda of adventure in that i've never riden my mtb or any bike for that long and I'll be exploring terrritory I've never ridden.

The SMR ban on mtb's rubs me the wrong way. When you look on a map of the Union/Essex co area there is not much for open space, other the big green blob guarded by Short Hills, Livingston, Millburn, Maplewood and South Orange. Maybe a compromise would be to allow mtb's in durning non-peak hours...but who am i kidding I know myself and others wouldn't obey that law either.

I Roadbike
Since I'm waiting on getting a der. hanger I took the roadie out yesterday and did hill repeats. The one thing I noticed is that my EVO is really comfortable as compared to when I had my mtb out the day before linking roads and trails. The saddle seems to low on my mtb when I pedal on the road, maybe I should raise it up a bit to be more comfortable for the WC 100. Also I'm not sure what tire pressure to run on mtb. Normally I'm at 21 psi in front and 23 in back, should I raise psi based on the amount of road miles for the WC?

Also
I'm still not used to 80's music being thrown into CBS 101.1. It just doesn't flow when you have Tavaras, Heavan Must be Missing an Angel go to Madonna, Lucky Star. I like 70's music and I like 80's music but like cereal and water they shouldn't be mixed.

that radio mix is more like accidentally putting your orange juice in your cereal instead of milk - like i did this morning.

poaching is an odd thing. its so weird that time is spent stopping someone from riding their bike versus stopping something actually bad. but rules are rules. we ride bikes on dirt - there's a stereotype for us - aren't we supposed to break rules as we smash mountain dew cans against our foreheads?

i think a non-peak hours deal would work great for access. i can't stand riding my local parks on the weekends anytime after 8:30 anyway. the sourlands gets insane. you have to stop so many times for people hiking/walking you end up taking your bike for a walk. and 6MR gets really packed, it becomes train after train of bikers and hikers. i always stop or come to a super slow crawl when i come across another trail user even if i have "right of way", so it interrupts my flow. i'd rather have the trails to myself/the group i'm riding with anyway. its always nice to bump into a fellow rider, but bumping into 50 of them stop after stop... that gets old.

Chris
I wouldn't make any bike fit adjustments the day before a 100 mile ride. I always run higher tire pressures for the 100's, especially when there is a large % of pavement and gravel. Good luck and remember "it's not the destination, but the journey".

chris,.as far i can remember on WC100 course<>.it comprise mostly gravel roads/ horse carriage path at minewaska then on rail trail and some 10-15 miles (+/-) on asphalt.the only techy section would be in william lakes wich is only short distance.,..and some fun up and down awesome singletrack.
overall i would say about 70% is dirt gravel (on horse cariage trail and rail trail) and 20% of mixed root and rock (singletrack) but nothing compares to wawa and the rest asphalt.(i could be wrong my memory getting foggy nowaday)
dry condition=fast
wet=so-so
get your climbing leg ready,
coz you're gonna need it.

hope this will give you idea on how much air pressure you'll apply.

happy trails and happy racing!

So I guess I shouldn't mess with my saddle height. I was tempted to anyway but after a shake down ride this morning the bike felt just right, so I did not make adjustments. When you don't ride a particular bike for awhile, getting on it and feeling comfortable takes time. I was off my geared mtb for close to 4 months, this morning was my 4th ride in a week with it...its starting to feel a lot better.

Sram Don't Use Washers in Cassettes

Two der. hangers later I learned that Sram doesn't use a washer between the hub and cassette. If you put washer in, the cassette rubs against the der. hanger bolts...because there is not enough clearance. This will not allow the wheel to spin freely and put torque on hanger, which results in a busted hanger.
I left the washer in after using this wheel on my SS bike...do'h!

Wildcat 100 Prep

I took the day off work. It feels nice not having to wake up at 4am, however I work more when I'm at home. So far I did grocery shopping, several loads of laundry, cleaned kitchen and went for a bike ride with Cody & John Kuhn. We met at the Watchung Res. and kept it on the road. The plan was to spin for about an hour with a climb or two thrown in, mission accomplished. During the ride my chain hopped off the lower pulley. I don't think it was on the pulley 100% to begin with...this is why its good to take the bike out for a shake down ride. Its working good now...I just knocked on my wood table.

And
why are people so mousey at the deli line. They have those numbers to take and the dude calls out the number and its like people are afraid to speak up. I'm always like RIGHT HERE DUDE.

About to Die
I thought this song was appropriate prior to a 100 mile bike race. The band is called Dirty Projectors and they released this album last year. Reminds me of Tune-Yards...off beats and stretching lyrically. I hate Tune Yards but love Dirty Projectors.

That worries me. How can the chain be partially on the pulley?
I'd lube up the entire derailleur just to be safe.
Try to do a bit more shakin-down this afternoon if you can. Even just a local spin hitting potholes and jumping curbs to make sure the chain stays put.

Yes, that is a shimano spacer. Until I figured that out last year it caused me fits with my cross bike and quick wheel swapping. Im sure whoever just fixed the bike probably have to completely readjust the rear DR, so just make sure that is still working good after your shakedown ride.
