Is strava going from suck to blow?

My ride names are somewhat standard - usually a simple where and who I rode with. This is for my own use to find the ride later if I want to.

The only time I usually make any attempt at witty names is during the 31/31 challenge... since "Day # - 4am road loop" gets a bit repetitive...

An actual improvement to segments?

Never thought I'd see the day.

Interested to see if it actually make a difference. The multiple segments for the same thing is very annoying, but how do they pick the "correct one". Sometimes you look at a segment and the GPS is total trash, but how does strava weed this out. Knowing the basics of data scrubbing, it might not be as simple as one thinks. In any case, maybe.

Knowing the basics of data scrubbing,

Yeah.

Consider everything we have done at Cromwell. Every segment KOM will have been set in the beginning of the trail system before these builds. We're not changing the trails enough to cause the segment not to match. But the Stop Sign trail, as an example, would be impossible to get the KOM now.

Worse, the old Six Mile segments.

I think an improvement would be options for the end user. As an example, you should be able to set many different options on your user profile to make the experience batter. Here are a few examples that come to mind:

1. A boolean flag to show only bike rides. No offense but I do not need to see your Whoop score when you wake up, nor your dog's gps track
2. Boolean: flag to hide any activity with a default name like "afternoon ride"
3. Boolean: flag to hide indoor/trainer rides
4. Integer: show segments made in the last X years. So you can see segments from the last year, or 5
5. Integer: default number of years to show segment results - similar to the above but just give the last 3 years of activities when you show me the results. Sometimes a trail changes too much for 2024 to compare to 2018.

I'm sure there are more. Right now the Strava feed blows. As an example here are the 10 activities I see on my front page:

1. Road ride - no name
2. Road ride
3. Just a picture, not even a ride - wtf?
4. Road ride
5. My own Zwift ride from last night
6. Glenn's Zwift ride
7. Clayton TM
8. Someone joined a challenge - whoop-de-doo!
9. Something that appears to be a MTB ride in upstate NY
10. 12 minute road ride with no GPS track

Note that #1 AND #10 are from Kristen Faulkner so maybe we add a flag that says, "Allow any trash from Olympic athletes since the shit they do is probably better than what you're doing."

Bonus activity: Nagy crashed today.

I'll third this. We've always called it "polishing the turd", it never gets any better. But, ya know the kids today think AI can get it all done while they run out to grab a latte....They just need to get the OK from senior management who doesn't understand all the bullshit jargon they are hearing.

What about the BLOBs? We need more BLOBs. In all seriousness, I generally agree. More options to focus on what you see would be nice. But I fear that senior management is only concerned with platform engagement time, so the more time you spend weeding through the bullshit, the more you are "engaged" with the platform.

the more time you spend weeding through the bullshit, the more you are "engaged" with the platform.

I work with user experience issues literally every day, many times a day, with many different types of clients. We're talking clients you have heard of, may even do business with in some form - insurance, banking, etc. We work with back-end users, front-end users, internal, external, management, and so on. All the peoples.

So, so very often I see decisions made by people that have no grasp of how UX works, while the marketing, L&D, and UX teams don't get ignored, they don't even get engaged/invited. My point is this. Sure, they want user engagement. But you know how much engagement you get from people like me? Almost none. And it's been that way for years. Same with Facebook. There's so much shit that I can't be bothered.

You know what keeps me up past my bedtime? Instagram. You know what doesn't? Facebook and Strava. Whatever IG is doing, copy that. Then you'll get more engagement.

Seriously, I make it a policy to not give kudos to unnamed rides, yet that shit piles on my feed, hour after hour.

Trash panda dumpster fire algorithm in the house!

Can you tell me where my morning ride ranks on your list?

@JimN 's crash ride is #7 on my dashboard

AI comments,
Yesterday, just kinda of a JRA rides but I did some DH ripping and got a KOM and some cups. This is the AI:

Sorta of a normal road two hour ride, moderate pace, 37 miles. Note my typical MTB ride is 10-15.

Who are these helping lol
They need to leverage AI one way or another if only just to say they are using AI.
