October Pictures #3 - Osprey

This guy. Awesome AF, no? On my blisteringly windy 40 mile road ride that resulted in the most boring GPS art ever, I found this guy just hanging out. At the top of bridge crossing the Sebastian Inlet State Park, he was perched here, just keeping an eye on things. It's remarkable how much it looks like an eagle - to the point that when I got off my bike I thought to myself, "Man this guy looks like an eagle. It must be a sea eagle." One presumes that whoever named this bird originally went with the name, "Sea eagle," but then his 4 year old repeated it around the house, saying, "DADDY INVENTED A SEAGUL!" And so, the Osprey was born.

I see these magnificent raptors on the Delaware all the time, just beautiful.

I know you're an absolute huge pour over fan, what's the benefit/taste profile you get brewing it that style?

I'm a french press/aero press guy depending on the day.

Pour-over is only for shops I visit. It's basically an indication that the shop might have good coffee. It's what I get when I am out in the wild.

French press is like v2 of my coffee journey, maybe 10+ years ago now. In the end it was rough & inconsistent for my tastes. IDK what version I am on now, v13? Probably at least.

I have an aero press that I used for a while that Jeremy gave us for our wedding. Still using the same one, 5 years later. But now it's only for travel. I have it with me this week as it's indestructible and pretty compact.

At home I use the clever brewer. I like this the best as the water temperature seems to be a tad lower when using this, which jives with the beans I tend to get (lighter roast). It has the benefits of the aeropress in that you can soak the grounds as long as you want. But the open top is good as mentioned above.

In 2 years from now I may be doing something else. But I do like the fact that my current setup is as close as you can get to cowboy coffee and still consider yourself a coffee snob.

How is this better than a regular coffee maker? I have a ninja coffee machine. I grind beans daily. I'm using Kicking horse dark roast. This is the best coffee I have made at home to date.

It's not for me to say it's any better. Everyone likes what they like and it might be the case that you taste my stuff and think it sucks.

Coffee is pretty oil-heavy, and oils get rancid. Over time any coffee equipment will accumulate the rancid oil residue and it'll start to smell. With the aeropress or clever brewer or pour-over top, you can keep them pretty clean. With a coffee maker, there's just no chance to keep it clean over time. Day 1 will be clean, and every day after that will be slightly less clean. It adds up.

A dark roast will mask this a bit longer, so you'll probably feel like it's good for longer than a lighter roast. But someday you might think that it's not as good as it used to be. If that happens, buy a new coffee maker.

The "routine" I have to make coffee would be too much for most people, and I get it. It's not for everyone.

A drip coffee maker really shouldn't get dirty from oils, just scaling. Can clean the filter area and the pot pretty well and descale as needed.

Just never, ever use the pot to fill the tank as thats how the oils get in there and get cooked.

October Pictures #4 - Florida Riding

Florida can be a very picturesque place, as you can see below, or on my IG feed this week. There's almost always a point in the day where you can take a picture and say, "Damn, it's beautiful here." The scene below was taken just after I turned around at the mid point of my ride today, when I wanted to get a good shot of the bay. If you look closely, there are buildings across the water. The view you see here does not take away the very real fact that road riding in this state is nothing short of treacherous most days. The roads are generally not made for riding, and the drivers are human beings. If you've spent enough time with human beings, you know what I mean. What you can't see in this image is Patrick AFB, which is across the water somewhere. I was treated to an awesome view of a C17 coming right at me, banking to the right, and landing. That awesome sight does not take away from the fact that Florida roads and Florida drivers suck when it comes to road riding, regardless of how amazing it might look.

launch Friday, if you are still there.

October Pictures #5 - The Beach

I'm not a beach person. That said, I would be remiss if I didn't talk about it at least once in the week we're here. Today is day 5 and I've taken a dozen pictures while walking on the beach and they all start to look the same. Except this one, which is a tree that has been ripped from it's home, tossed into the ocean, and washed ashore during the storm last weekend. At first, you might think it's an elephant femur - something like that. It's not. But it does provide something different. We're staying right on A1A, which is approximately a 4 minute and 28 second walk to get to the sand, barefoot. Beach person or not, there's something enjoyable about listening to the ocean's rumble while you walk alongside it.

We're staying right on A1A,
Yo, so I continued to A1A Beachfront Ave
Girls were hot, wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving Lamborghini
Jealous 'cause I'm out getting mine
Shay with a gauge and Vanilla with a nine
Ready for the chumps on the wall
The chumps are acting ill because they're so full of eight ball
Gunshots ranged out like a bell
I grabbed my nine, all I heard were shells
Fallin' on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car, slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper the avenue's packed
I'm tryin' to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene
You know what I mean?
They passed me up, confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem
Yo, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

I lol'd hard first time I was in Miami and saw these street signs. I also lol'd hard when I saw Norm's post, but you beat me to it.
Wait, why lol’ed?
You best not be dissing the Ice in my presence -
Don’t make me grab my nine chump

Is this where you'll be during Thanksgiving?

October Pictures #6 - Anniversary

Today is our 5 year anniversary, and so I present to you the slice of time captured below as we took a walk on the beach in the late afternoon. Less than a minute after this picture, D realized she lost her engagement ring, which had been in her (zippered) pocket since her beach walk this morning. She was upset, obviously. We turned around and retraced our steps, but it was obvious that if she dropped it on the beach, it was long gone. We got back to the condo and looked everywhere it could be - no luck. We went outside to the pool where her parents and their friends get together every Friday for a little social hour, and she told the story. Maybe 2 seconds later, her dad points at the ground behind her and says, "There it is!" And so, we will peacefully make it to 5 years and 1 day tomorrow, all rings in our possession.
