James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

Has anyone ridden a mountain bike on the moon?!

Looks like @pooriggy is still working on the trail

October Pictures #31 - My Trusty Sidekick

Hi, me again. But this time I brought my sidekick. Like Batman had Robin, Bonnie had Clyde, and Captain had Tennille, I have my trusty sidekick D (aka Dominique in more official circles) along for the ride on almost all these adventures. While we do not fight crime, create crime, or even sing about crime, I like to think we have a lot of fun adventures together. While I can, and often do, explore on my own, I don't like to exist on my own. I could never be one of these solo nomads that travel about. I like to share what I have done, am doing, and plan to do. D has been a perfect partner in all of this. When I say things like, "Hey, you ok if we swing by this coffee shop that does a pour-over in a man's hat with a pear floating in it?" she always rolls with it and says yes. When I ask her to ride back & forth in front of a cactus so I can take a picture, she does it without asking why. She's always game for whatever nonsense I've worked up, and has been the most awesome travel & life partner a guy could ask for. Here's to many, many more (with or without the free fish).

@Norm I initially thought the post was about the reasonable facsimile of Bear in the shape of a cactus, but we all know he doesn't like pears 🙂

The secret of a great leader is to make her subjects believe they’re running the show…so, who’s the sidekick here? Keep believing @Norm , great job @Dominique ! Jokes aside it’s great to be able and share your passions with your partner, a great way to go through life, always having something to look forward to. And work to get there. Kudos to the two of you!

Topicless November - A New Month
Category
: Uncategorized

I had a few ideas for what to do in November. One was "Shit I Did," which would be simply talking about daily life if I did anything of note. But then this is sort of what I've done all the years I've written this. I considered Questions, where I ask a question every day in an effort to create conversation. Then I tossed out a list of topics I might talk about. You could mostly guess what they are - bike riding, training, skiing, travel, work, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and so on. I decided that November would just be some ad hoc, random combination of all those things. Today's topic is basically no topic at all. Chrome tells me that topicless is not a word, but Google's generative AI search and Wikipedia both say it is. So there: right-click, Add to Dictionary. Problem solved.

I like the single paragraph format, as it allows the post to be easy to digest, as well as easy to create. So of course I kick off this month with a post which is greater than 2 paragraphs, and on the 6th of the month. I don't plan to post every day. But I will try to keep it to 1 paragraph. Mostly. In any event, here is my poor quality picture of the spectacular sunrise this morning. Other than that, it's been a Monday.

Where’s the choir video? Any solos?

I feel like this was a missed opportunity somehow.

P.s. now I want nachos. Or a charcuterie board even tho it's nothing like nachos. 🤷‍♀️

: Trail Maintenance

After almost a month being diverted by other things like seashores and Sedona, I made it back to RV today. I posted some of the details in that other thread which you can find if you're so inclined. What I want to talk about is being active. Getting out of your chair. I think it's crucial to always be doing something in addition to the daily exercise many of us like to do. Working in the yard, walking the dog, or whatever it might be. Being active as much as possible makes me feel better pretty much every day. I see these TM sessions as just another way to do something other than laying on the couch. I can see myself doing this for a long time. If I retired today I would keep myself busy riding my bike and doing trail work like this. I see some of my older relatives retire and then do nothing with themselves, and I think this is a death sentence. While I'm not close enough to think about retiring, I'm always trying to find ways to be more active.

So my question. Other than biking, what do you do to stay more active on a daily or weekly basis?

True statements.

As much as I hate the yard work like cutting the grass, leaves, etc… it’s one more thing to get me outdoors and moving. Walking the dog is something I always try to do as much as possible especially if I can’t ride that day I take her for longer walks.

And my rowing machine is a great alternative to a bike ride for using different muscles.

No-Topic November - Chimney Rock

: Bike Riding

I've changed the month theme from Topicless November to No-Topic November, as the alliteration feels better to say. Try it out. Go stand in front of a mirror and repeat both of them until you agree. Today I rode my bike at Chimney Rock by myself. I hit all the new stuff, plus a loop of the ballfields as well as some red. I tried to ride this more or less as hard as I could without going batshit crazy and I managed to get 2 top 10s, which is pretty much something that doesn't happen to me anymore. So I got that going for me, which is nice. I've obviously been trying to take the opportunity to be outside as much as possible recently, and an afternoon mtb ride is a nice side bonus from the fact we're just not that busy at work right now. As I mentioned on that last day in Sedona, I'm enjoying riding my bike a lot right now. I know the cold will put a little bit of a damper on that but I can enjoy it while it lasts. I really want to avoid spending 4 straight months inside this winter.

So my question: Inside of, let's say 2-2.5 hours from central jersey, what is the most epic/bigly trail system in the area?

Then we demolished these ribs, which has nothing to do with bike riding.

Michaux looks to be pretty epic from what I hear. Just tad over your time distance. I'd put 2 days there and scoot down to fredricks watershed.
