Light Questions

Im sure they will be fine. However that runtime is kinda low on high. My L&M 1400 is 2:30hs on high. Personally I prefer a minimum of about 1200 lm whether its from one light or a combination of two. Although with two you always have a backup just incase one goes dead.

Does anyone else have much experience with Niterider? I was comparing price/ lumen/battery and through my team shop I can get the Niterider 1200race for not much more then the stella 500. The beam looks much fuller on the 1200 (obviously has more then double the lumens) Manufacturer specs has the 1200R running at an extra 45 minutes over the L&M for the comparable lumen output (3:30 @ 600L) and 1:45 on high at 1200.
General thought on Niterider Quality?

I've had a few Niteriders and have been satisfied.

I started with a Niterider MiNewt 150 on the helmet and MiNewt X2 300 on the bars. Both were light and small, only complaint was it was not bright enough to allow faster speeds on the trail.

I've purchased a Lumina 650 for the helmet and a MiNewt Pro 750 on the bars. Again both lights are light weight and small overall size. Running on mid-level, get 3hrs and 400/500 lumens.

I used Nitride lights for many years. The latest was an HID, I don't know about there LED lights but the lights I've owned tended to be heavy large battery's and cables to deal with. They all worked well and I was happy with there performance but when they start to give you trouble there expensive to repair. I can buy a new LED light that is light and compact with an internal battery cheaper and they work just fine for the night riding that I do. I do at least one off road night ride a week.

I use the Bontrager ion 2 for $30 bucks. Get two and your set.
I would not go into the woods late at night with these, but if you went out as the night sets in, it works well. Or, on the road late at night works.

My buddy loves the Lezyne Power Drive XL, around $100.

You can find some petty decent reviews for most lights here http://reviews.mtbr.com/2014-mtbr-bike-lights-shootout (2014 model year lights) and here http://reviews.mtbr.com/2013-bike-lights-shootout (2013 model year lights).

There are a host of new manufacturers that make very good lights at prices competitive with MS. The MS lights are decent to good but their batteries don't last. You could replace the battery with a high capacity and quality battery from Openlightsystems if yu go with a MS light.

Generally people prefer to have a flood light on the bars and a spot light on the helmet. Some lights are so powerful that it doesn't matter. Spot lights are best for the road when going fasterand flood lights for side visibility when riding singletrack.

Dinotte is about the best value for money (the XLM-3 makes an honest 1550 lumens, has a great beam pattern and goes for only $219).

L&M produce lights with the best beam patterns and the Tazz series is great for as handlebar lights. I prefer the convenience of a cordless light for the light I mount on the bike.

The Cateye Volt 1200 is an awesome new light. Leave the mount on the handlebar ad you can just clip in/out like with your Garmin device when you want to ride.

I really like the Gloworm stuff. I have the X2 v2 (the v3 makes 1500 lumens this year and they have 2200 lumen model available now too). For the new models, like the Gemini's, the user can set his own output levels for Low, Medium and High. You can decide how much run time you want out of your light.

Lots of sales going on now on the 2013 model year lights.

Cygolite mitycross 800....For road and mtb.....Fwiw, The Magicshine doesnt even come close to this light.

I run a Niterider Lumina700 for commuting and as a second light for off-road. Off-road I have a L&M Seca 1500 Race which is spectacular. I spend over 50% of my riding time per week in the dark. Yesterday I did a 40-Mile night ride in the woods, light set-up was flawless.

I just use a lumia 650 on my helmet and bars. On medium. That's plenty for me and no battery cables or bulky battery mounted to my bars is awesome

For commuting, I use a Nite Rider Pro 600 for my bars and a Light and Motion Urban 400 on my helmet. It pretty much works on or off road and turns night into day.

Spectacular is high praise. Could you elaborate? What is it about the Seca that you like so much? Light pattern, light color, battery life, build quality? At 50% night riding you sure have put it through its paces.

The SECAs are always refered to as having the best beam pattern in the business. When you ride with one compared to others you will see the difference. I actually prefer a warmer color temp tho.

solite 250 ex

I use the regular solite 250 (last year, less runtime) almost every day for work as a head lamp. I love this thing. Its so nice being able to use a cell phone charger so I can just leave it in the truck and don't have to take it home. Last week I went out for a night ride knowing my bike light hadn't been charged and probably wasn't going to last, so I threw the solite in my pack figuring it would at least get me back to the truck. Well I had to use it and was suprised how well it worked in the woods. Now, I wouldn't use it as my only light, but it actually worked decent as a helmet light. Its a fairly focused beam so it looks brighter than the 250lm would suggest.

Thanks for the input, I picked up a Seca 2000 race from Halters on Black Friday. OMG that f-ing light is awesome! I have no issues on the trail at all (light wise) 😉
