Anyone plan to race this? From the pics from last year looks like it was fun but not sure if its worth the drive.

I did it a couple years ago. Awesome race, with a big fire road climb right at the start. It was RIDICULOUSLY muddy when I did it, but I had a lot of fun. I really wasn't in the mood to deal with all that crap and almost turned around halfway there, but I stuck it out and I was glad I did. I was racing SS, and Gerry Pflug lapped all but one guy … and that was not the first time that happened …

Ok im in.😀Just like rattlin mitch.I may not be fast but i will get it done on the rigid ss with a big grin.Sounds like that dude gerry will be lapping me.

I'll be there. Big fireroad climb to start with conditions a little less wet than last year. It was still a blast and the one main rock garden is relentless...doable, but relentless.

It was a chilly 22 degrees at the start line last year. Hopefully it's a wee bit warmer this year. The course was pretty challenging with some real technical sections that seem to go on forever and a few decent dirt road sections that allow you to drink and eat without stopping. The trophy was definitely groovy- a hatchet cleaved into a piece of Pennslytucky oak along with a bottle of local wine.

Yea it was a cool race. Maybe that's cause I beat Jeremiah Bishop...no really. I think it's cause he had to fashion a new bike out of wood but it still counts. 😉

Ryan beating Bishop is where I would hang up my cleats and call it a career :-D

This was a pretty hard race. The course either had you going up or down. There was a section of fun single track and then what was probably the most difficult rock garden I've ever experienced in a race. Of course it was covered in ice and mud but it was tough. The course and terrain are somewhat unique. definitely more technical in sections than Rattling Creek but also some longish fireroads. It was a pretty short lap. Top times were in the 40 min range.

Other than that, it's a cool race. Well organized, well run, hard, 4+hrs of racing in March, and a good post race meal. What more could you ask for? FYI, there is nothing around for miles so plan accordingly. I stayed in the closest hotel which was still about 45 minutes from the venue.

I'll be back this year.

I just grabbed one of the last 5 spots in this race. This is going to be the maiden voyage of a SS I'm putting together. It'll be a hard transition from riding my cushy fatty with its 26T ring...

Al, Looks like I am out on this now. Have a party in LI sat nite for sister in-law. To early in year to start missing family stuff for bike stuff.
Pampa good luck on the new ride..

Too bad that you're not going Mitch, but I wouldn't have seen much of you anyway 🙂

I was looking for alternatives to SSaP today (I was late to the party), this is the only thing that came up in Bikereg and I signed up on a whim. Now I realize I need to figure out-among other things-what gearing to use. Can anyone that knows the course offer some advice? For example, how's the gearing you use compared to that for SSaP? I'd use 32-18 for that race. It looks like this course is harder-and the race longer-but I don't know how much harder.

Thanks!

Last year the course was a series of hills that took you straight up then straight down. Pretty much the only flat section was short but technical.

See you out there.

Based on what Jeff says, gear for climbing then. Gravity will be your downhill gear so you need to be able to make the climbs comfortable. Gear is individual for everybody so go with a gear that you would use to do 4 hours going up and down Allamuchy from the Tranquility lot. Have fun and be safe.

About a 1.8 (32:18 or equivalent) would work well there. I wouldn't go any lighter and heavier will feel like a crucible on the big climb. There is a second climb that won't be rideable if it's wet, but it's pretty short. All in all, a little less than 2:1 is probably the right choice.

Thank you all. Mmmm, I've never gone up Allamuchy from the Tranquility lot but I've gone down that way a few of times. Now way I can use 32:18 with those kind of hills for 4 hrs. I'm thinking 32:20 or 32:21. I haven't been on a SS since last year's SSaP and the longest I've ridden in months was less than 3 hrs 2 weeks ago...

I'm looking forward to it. See (some of) you there.

I did this race yesterday (some of it anyway). I can tell you that the comments on how hard it is are not exaggerated. The rock garden was unlike anything I have ever ridden before. The 32-21 I ran was not nearly enough for the shape I'm currently in and after walking all the hills on the 4th lap I called it a day.

The course was great, it was well marked, the organization was great too and the food so good that I might come back just for that 🙂

I think I came in last. I wanted to get a reality check and this really did it for me...
