Max Heart Rate

One thing that I find interesting about Strava segments, (besides their names) is what people HR was when they rode it. I find that my HR is usually 30bpm faster than people around me. So that got me thinking what are peoples Max HR and age.

Mine seems to be 198
Age 44

Age 48
Looking at a few XC and Endurance races last year
Max 178
Avg XC range 155-165
Avg End. range 145 - 155

While the HR number essentially means nothing only to yourself, it's fun to play this game. My favorite is seeing the high average HR numbers:

186BPM for 1:54 at SSAP 2014
190BPM for 1:48 at 2011 Fair Hill Classic
191BPM for 1:44 at the 2013 KVSP XC race

other weird ones:
177bpm for 4:59 at 2014 Stoopid 50
165bpm for 8:21 at 2014 W101
I have over 20 files that are not errors of 200 BPM

Joe did how did you come to that max hr number?
like 8 years, maybe 1500 rides worth of HR data....Biking, 183 is the highest I have ever seen, but that would only happen on the high gear A ride...MTB race, I usually cant sustain an effort that hard for that long combined with a very high cadence before having to stop pedaling. 183 would be us doing the entire lamington road segment, then a big sprint at the end. I have seen 180 in a mtb race a few times, but typically its around 176-178

Motocross race is the highest I have ever have seen my HR 189, 172 ave for a ~15min moto...have never come close to anything like that on a bicycle...although I was not in same the kind of cardio shape then.

Max. 206 according to Garmin 2 years ago

When I was a cat 3, one of my races avg hrs was 191. Like a hamster lol

I haven't trained to heart rate in years, but I did wear a Holter monitor for a full day a few years ago. My wife is an EMT and an echo tech and she was curious as to what my rates would be. So she had me wear it all day and even get up at 4:30 am to go ride on the road to see what it would be then (I also had to ride after work.) My max rate that I hit was nothing unusual - I maxed out on a long climb that I pushed on and it was bout 192. My resting heart rate, though, was noteworthy, to the point where my wife thought there was an error at first (we later saw the full data and it was right.) While I was sleeping it went down to 37, and while I was awake but not doing much it was 48. In fact, 49 was the mode rate for the day.

My takeaway was that physically I'm nothing special when it comes to athletic endeavors, but I'm friggin' gifted when it comes to doing nothing. I'm just built for resting -- some have it and some don't, but I'm one of the special ones when it comes to not doing a goddamn thing.

Age: 41
Max I have ever seen was 183. And I don't think I have ever held that for much more than 30 seconds.

206 in a 30b motocross race. First mtb race(cat 2 at mooch) 2015 202. Now my max runs around 196. Threshold is around 176 I think.

I too like seeing my heart rate on Strava. At 72 years old I keep an eye on it while riding too.
When I see it getting too high I take a break and walk it for a while.
I know I’m slow and my energy level isn’t great, but I still enjoy being out there doing what I do.
I also have a medical condition I have to deal with that works against me.
My highest heart rate should be 150 bpm while exercising.
My average mph and top speeds are pathetic compared to most riders, but that’s all I got. Here’s some examples.

Trail ride, Banker Trail to Cherry Ridge. 3.7 miles
Heart rate average 145 high of 162 3.6mph average /11mph top speed

Clinton Road ride 19.3 miles
Speed average 9.2 mph fastest 23 mph
Heart Rate average 134 highest 165

My daily ride 5 mph average on some road, some trail,
with a heart rate of average of 132 and high of 166

It's all anout having a good time Pete. Thanks for meeting Jim and I at the end of TLD last year. That's what it's about.

A pretty good estimate of maximum heart rate is 208 -(.7 x age), validated by researchers who tested over 1000 persons using maximal treadmill tests. There's about an 11 beat standard deviation in maximum heart rate measurement, however, meaning that in a given individual, there's only a 68% chance that his/her actual maximum heart rate is within 11 beats of the value predicted by the equation, and 95% chance that it's within 22 beats of the predicated value. This is a pretty wide dispersion, so even persons of a similar age can have widely differing maximum heart rates. Unfortunately (as many of us older folks have probably noticed), maximum heart rate typically goes down steadily with age. This is a physiological process, not normally an indicator of being in "worse shape" -- just older.
