Mercer County Park Conditions

This hidden, annoying, pedal grabber near the tennis courts on red trail has been removed! Cleaned up the immediate area here and around the old farm house.

Last Saturday during TM, we received several reports of a large tree down on the blue trail near the single bridge. Last Monday I had notified the trail steward - park saw crew and today I went out to check. Apparently they have not been there. So I trimmed out what I could by hand so that hikers and riders could pass easily. The tree actually blocks two trails. Blue and the Blue bypass that was added when hurricane Sandy blew thru. Hopefully the Park saw crew will get to it soon.

I had an hour left so I went over to Van Nest and used my hedge trimmer to clear the thorny section near the parking lot on yellow trail. We still need to brush hog it.

Thanks to all for the reports. I know exactly where that is. I'll see if I can get it Thursday. That's in the Van Nest refuge and the county park can't work in there. Those pine trees were all severely compromised by hurricane Sandy. It was just a matter of time before the last ones started falling.

Sure was.. And as I started looking around there are at least 5-7 more dead ones in that area within reach of the trail bed!
We may just have to let them fall over time. They are rotted to the point to be unpredictable if you try to saw them down.

Does anyone know if the large tree down on the Blue trail towards the rowing center, past the single bridge has been removed? The park tree crew was notified but I have not received an update.

Thanks!

The tree on Blue trail has been removed. I got out there this morning and completed cutting it off the main trail.
The side trail still needs to be cleared.

There is a good size tree down on red where it runs along the road to the the old house. It is up by the top of the entrance to the road on the parking lot side.

Trees down at "1" and "2" markers. Photo of the first one is attached below so you can decide what kit is needed. The branches have made the trail impassable by bike or foot so need to walk into thorny bushes to get around. Also, the horizonal branch is directly over the trail and seems to have some widowmaker potential.

The second tree I think is the one that a previous poster referenced. That one is easy to ride around or walk around/over.

As always thank you for the good work that you do.
