Mid Fat Conversion

I'd love to try it but don't think my FS bike's frame will handle the 3" size. As it is, I'm rolling just fine at 29 X 2.5"...so does that make me "baby-mid-fat-29" or something? 😀

A fatbike frame is probably the closest thing to the "swiss army" bike. It will run 26x4" (or 5"), 27.5x3, regular 29 and maybe even 29+. I"m running 27.5x3.5 wheels on my fatbike this summer, and they're pretty sweet. See this forum over at MTBR for some info on what 29ers can be "upconverted": http://forums.mtbr.com/27-5-29/

to the gurus

im thinking of getting wtb trailblazer 2.8 to put on stock giant sc2 27.5 wheels as i have a set, running it tubeless

can i use the 2.8s on that wheel or i need a new wheel ? and why?

i know ideally it would be great to run a dedicated 27.5+ wheel

if i can do this on my 29er anthem im definitely gonna keep it!!

I dont think you have an issue though the tire may be a little rounder depending on rim width. i don't think that there is a per say b+ specific rim as i am sure they can range from 35mm-55mm. Ideally you would want wide as you can and hookless...

is that a go signal to get the trail blazer 2.8s?

is there a reason why it wouldnt work on a s-xc2 wheel?

It comes down to , will it fit?

My concern is.... Unless you're running a carbon rim with 32 spokes, the wheel WILL flex, so the tire MAY rub on the sides when you load them up in the turns. If you don't have at least 3-5mm on each side, I think it MIGHT be an issue.

More opinions please.

I want to try this with my Misfit. I think I can fit a pretty big tire up front with the rigid fork. Maybe try a 2.4 or 2.5 in the back or I could just keep the 29er wheel back there with a Minion or something.

Some 27.5 wide rims I've found so far are:

WTB Scraper
Stans Hugo
Velocity 35 or Dually

@soundz I already tried the scraper and 3.25 vee trax not enough clearance. I think 38mm rim and WTBs 2.8 will fly nicely on the alc misfit. If you have an older al frame your clearance is less.

You are talking about in the rear right? What are some 38mm rim(s) I can get?

yes i agree totally
there are some more dedicated 27.5 wheels that are wide and will make a better choice but i was asking on weighing the pros/cons of running the wtb trailblazers on what i have now which are 27.5 s-xc2 wheels
i wish i had carbon wheels with 32h laced to hope hubs

maybe i should rephrase how i intend to use and make it, if you had 27.5 s-xc2 wheels laying around and have a anthem 29er, would you attempt to try trailblazer 27.5 x 2.8 tires on them, set it up tubeless, run 12-14 psi in them and ride ringwood or lew-morr trails?

@soundz lightbicycle carbon rims.

@domo swing by Sussex bike and see Pete. Ask to throw his scrapers tire combo on the rear and take it from there. It will give you an idea before plunking cash down on an experiment.

If the rim is under 30mm wide external, the tire is going to be floppy. Please be careful.

@domo, @mattybfat , @soundz I think you might enjoy this podcast.... They talk about the rim to tire ratio and the whole plus size thing...eventually.

I am running my 29er trans am as 650b+. love it. tons of climbing grip on the trail blazers. soft ride. definitely feels a lot lighter (carbon wheels might be helping) but braking performance kind of sucks on the tire. otherwise a blast to ride. I am plowing through everything at Chimney Rock and gripping hard at hartshorne.

So you finally did it, nice! Any pics for us?

Here are some pics from this past week. its so much fun I am fighting to decide which bike to ride. HD3 or this bad boy! Both are super fun!

Also Lou from Pedal Montclair built them up for me. Great shop and great mechanic, had them posted on his Facebook page.

I like the way it looks and handles. feels much more nimble and not as tall (not quite the same Diameter as a true 29er) but not as noticeable as just a straight up 650b rim which I tried on the 29er frame. All in all I think it dropped the BB by a quarter of an inch, maybe even less.

Edit details:

Hubs: Hope Pro 2 Evo (CRC is giving them away for great prices, that 40t hub sound is second to King)
Tires: WTB Trailblazer 2.8
Rims: Light Bicycle 27.5" DH casing 38mm Wide external and 31.6 mm wide internal
Aluminum Nipples and dt swiss spokes.

SUPER stiff rim. no flexing whatsoever. on my third set, won't ever second guess buying from them.
