Tuesday
As expected, I rode to get some lunch and actually ate the lunch at the place while taking 1000 pictures of myself in the reflection of my sunglasses. I had the fenders on, which reminded how great they are to have when the roads are wet and it isn’t raining. Ice falling off over overhead telephone and powerlines was interesting and I got hit once or twice, not too many times you have to worry about that happening. Even though I only rode for a short time, it was quite an enjoyable ride. While I don’t prefer misty rain over a dry day, there is something to be said about riding in those conditions. Here is the not-so-interesting file.

This Morning
Forget the threat of black ice, there was just straight up ice and a lot of it too. Some roads were dry and others were death on a bike. I got out alittle later than usual and didn’t really have a route in mind. All I knew was that I didn’t want to go west because of the wind. The first main road I went on the shoulder was all ice, but it was still early so I could ride the lane without issue. The road dried out for a bit minus areas of bad drainage that left an ice river across the road and had me riding like a terracotta soldiers for 10’ section had a time while simultaneously letting out a slight eeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhh sound as sound effects always bring good luck and make things safer.

On one of the roads that actually had cars on it, I stopped a few times to let cars pass because the shoulder was pure ice. Not long after that I turned onto Cleveland Road headed towards Princeton and that road was horrible due to poor drainage and I walked quite a few 50’ sections. I thought about turning around but figure it would clear up once I hit Pretty Brook, which it did, only because half of NJ’s salt supply was spread on the road. The rest of the ride was ok minus some db cutting the corner at an intersection and almost hitting me head on and I was actually where I should be. It was close enough that I almost hit his side mirror. Lovely. However, I am happy to report that the shoulder has returned to Princeton pike as it had been missing for a few weeks now., still sketchy in a few spots but good overall.

I couldn't even get up my road this morning so it was the trainer for me (again). I think this thing is a good tool but four days in a row and all the podcasts in the world won't change the fact I'm in my garage.

you better get out tomorrow as saturday looks like more crap. To top that off, it is my son's birthday party on Saturday morning. If road conditions prevent that from happening, it is gonna be a loooooong day.

I'm riding in again tomorrow. Me and Pearl had a ride set up for Saturday but like you said we have some weather rolling in. On the other hand If it looks good at 6am I'm going for it from my crib on my local mean streets loop. I wanted to tack on 100-120 miles in these 3 days before i leave for Orlando on Sunday

yeah, i know. and i don't wish that birthday party #FAIL on anyone.

the roads i ride around here were a mess last night and it was like 33*. with the way i knew the temp was going to fall overnight, i was 110% confident that crashing/slipping/falling was nearly a guarantee. i don't need that in my life right now so i listened to another podcast (i'm listening to The Daily Edition, Briefly Awesome and The Pipeline for reference) and tried to imagine that i was anywhere other than in my garage staring at the garage door. i mean, i'm into these podcasts too, they're really good and right in my wheelhouse on a number of levels but after four days in a row (one of which was a double session) i'm ready to do anything else. i'm scheduled for another trainer sessions tomorrow and i know coach doesn't want me to switch things up too much but if i can get in the woods in the am i'm doing it.

jake have you tried teh sufferfest dvds?

no, i haven't. right now the "plan" calls for easy work, like zone 2 type stuff @ high cadence.

i need a video game version of this trainer thing. something that would work with a ps3 or xbox and react like live cycling. adjust resistance for hills, have real riders, real roads, maybe even iconic stages of the grand tours. kinda like you, me and dupree when he's chasing lance on the trainer.

if they had that i would probably ride the entire tour.

you're the second person that has mentioned this idea to me...

if it were on the PS3/xbox you could even do a race online against real people

if you have a chance can you ask your coach what his opinion is of the sufferfest stuff?

This to occupy yourself while riding the trainer has no place in this thread. BTW, why do you just ask him yourself?

We have been able to race on-line for a few years now. All you have to do is buy $2,000 of equipment and convince all of your buddies to do the same. 🙄

The Sufferfest video are following the current trend of adding actual race footage to provide motivation to the viewer. Nothing wrong with that.

As a coach, I consistently hear, "what do you think about this..." In my head, the response is, "If you think it will help, and I know it won't hurt, than go for it.

If the training videos get you on the bike in January and February, then I am all for them. I would caution that the videos may prompt you to ride harder that you should at this time of year. They are doing very little to improve your endurance. Once back outside, you may impress your friends for the first 60 minutes. If the ride is going to be three hours long, you will get a reality check.

i knew that existed but it's not approachable or scalable. if it was available on either one of those networks with a some sensors that retrofit to a trainer that would be something.

as for those videos...well...i'm just doing what the coach man tells me to do. i have my motivation to do it, it's more of a mental challenge of being in the garage.

I bet something will be available sooner than later. The Microsoft kinect could make it happen
